After returning from a recnet bear hunting outing I realized I knew very little about bears in genral. This has sparked some recent study of the species. What information I have not found is what does a bear have to score to “make the books” or to be considered a trophy? I realize that for me and others any leagally taken bear would be a personal throphy. However for instance a bull elk over 370 by a lot of people’s standards considered a monster bull. What are the numerical equivlants for Arizona black bear? Does any one have measurements or pics of the state record? Thanks

Rag Horn replied to AZLance's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Ok this is driving me crazy. Could someone please tell me where I can find a pic of this toad of a buck? Or could someone e mail it to me? The curiosity is killing me I got to see it. Everyone has got to see it but me and I am feeling a little left out over here. Just kidding…. but seriously lets see the pics already. -
Thanks kidso... which I guess raises another question for me. If skull size is not the only thing to consider then how about other measurements such as weight, and length, how long/heavy is a “big” bear?

Thanks to you both for your responses. Couesbuckhunter do you have any pics you would mind sharing to show me what a 16 14/16ths inch bear looks like? For comparisons and visual reference purposes.

I never really liked going to that range. I think the crowd the range seems to draw on the days I am there is always a crowd I do not want to be a part of. For example on my last trip there on my right I had 4 guys ranging in age from I would guess 18 to 25. They had their target about 12 yards from the bench blasting away the cardboard with their 12 gauge. Why? To make sure there was no cardboard left on the metal rack. Least that is what the guys’ three buddies were cheering him on to do. Then his other buddy steps up to the bench with his Glock. Proceeds shooting it with the gun 90 degrees off straight up and down popping of shots like he is in a drive by. Then on the left I had a guy with his target at 25 yards and his sks blasting away seeing how fast he can shoot all the while his brass is bouncing off the side and top of my head. This all going on while I was trying to sight in my gun. Now I realize anyone can go the range and shoot and shoot whatever firearm they want to. That is their prerogative. If I do not like it then I don’t have to go. This is exactly what I have started to do. I have started using other locations to sight in and shoot my guns. The above mentioned incident was describing my last visit but could be applied different people same sort of frustration for any of my last 10 visits. This crowd that seems to be attracted to the range coupled with the same piss poor “customer service” I have similarly experienced has made Rio Salado my last resort option anymore. It is just not worth the headache of it all anymore. Thanks for letting me vent on the subject.

Or on second thought maybe you should nuke the thread so as not to wind up getting your butt in a ringer for slinging accusations around that may or may not be substantiated. Regardless of the validity of the claims this is not the venue to convict an alleged thief. Just my own thoughts after I let the dust settle on my last post.

There is too much different information in different areas for me to keep it straight. I want to see it all the “evidence” in one post. Create a thread and call it “case of the tampered with trail cam” or something like that. All the spread out info scrambles the evidence thus creating a weak argument. My verdict is that there is something fishy going on but in an undefined sort of way. But I am glad that you cam is not stolen.

I recently had the opportunity to go elk hunting with my friend in unit one this last weekend. These are just a few thoughts I had. Finally spotted the beast He’ll score 380 at least With tines long heavy and dark brown You’d give anything to bring him down There is an urgency you can sense You’ve got to close the distance Wind is perfect out of the west Knock and arrow and lay it on the rest Caught up in the thrill Of being poised for the kill Your heart stops beating You know this moment is fleeting There is a quick moment of peace The arrow is released Everything seems so serene You’ve bagged the bull of your dreams Thank the lord for letting it be This once in a lifetime memory

While doing a little research online looking for reviews for cover scents I found a recipe for making my own. The basic idea was to take vegetation from my hunting area, cut it up into small chunks, boil the vegetation in distilled water and strain the chunks out. Then put the remaining liquid into a spray bottle and use as a cover scent. I did that this weekend because the idea intrigued me. I realize that the time spent doing this probably does not justify the few dollars I saved by not buying it from the store. However that being said has anyone out there in CWT land have any information about such a process that they would care to share? Perhaps things they have tried or if this process even works or not? I made 2 different batches. The first batch was oak and the second was juniper. The juniper one smells to me to be pretty good but I am not a deer? Any info or opinions would be appreciated thanks.
