ctafoya replied to scoutpylot's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I picked up a pound a while back for my 243. Couldn't find load data for a 95gr sst so I called em up.I was told that the powder would not work above 75gr for 243 so I have new un opened pound I need to put in the classifieds. -
Heading out soon to the high country for some late bull action. So far it looks like it will be wet muddy snowy etc. I want to make sure our barrels stay free of gunk. I have heard that a piece of electrical tape will work. Just trying to find out the validity of that statement. What do you guys recommend?

I have finally found the need to buy a chronograph. I never have used one, but i would like to use it for my rifles and bows. Will they pick up any speed or are there rifle/archery specific? I would like to pick one up asap but i just don't know anything about them. What is a good one?

My wife and I screwed up the first time we killed a deer. I shot mine in the spine(was still dead within a minute) and my wife blew out the hips on hers. 30 minute hike to find it curled up in a bush before she could finish it off. Fever got us. Now we have better optics and understand how to correctly use them and practice a lot more. I am now confident in shots to 600 yards, but if the wind is going I wont do it. I just don't have the experience yet to accurately make that kind of adjustment. Nothing wrong with making mistakes as long we learn from it and move on. I'm sure everyone on here at one time or another has made a bad call laps in judgement a quick change in conditions buck fever whatever that has led to a less then desirable shot.

Thanks for the info. Ill try a little piece of tape and hopefully we'll have time to remove it just in case.

The best hunt(besides when my boys tagged their first pig) was solo archery elk. I love being out there with nobody else around to just take everything in.

Thanksgiving day routine, "traditions", and meals on the late hunt?

Drive to the cabin. Drink a beer. Scout one last time. Drink a beer. Drive back to cabin for football and playing pool. Drink more beer. -
Nice fox by the way.

Crap like that is what the anti hunting crowd likes to see. They can view this site the same as we can so be careful what you post.

If you have a 6.0 you need this. I really could have used one on an elk hunt 5 years ago. Ended up being towed out opening day.

What powder for .308 win?
ctafoya replied to DesertBull's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I use h4350 for all my larger calibers with great success. -
I have a set of the Nikon ar rings I could let go. PM me if interested. I used them with a cheap simmons take off and shot very well to 200 yards. I also have some cheap scopes im getting rid of.

So we took my wife's new Remington 700 7mm out yesterday and "broke" it in. The results are the same as my savage 116 300wsm that saw 50 rounds before it ever had a patch run through it. Both are .25 or better at 200 yards. Is break in just a myth or did I just get lucky with my savage?

Keep your head on a swivel. We had the first JR hunt. Glassed up two monster pigs and on the way to them we jumped a heard and shot one at 15 yards. Two days later went back to the same spot and shot another one at 10 yards. As long as your quite you wont bust em out. They'll hang out for a few minutes to try to find out what you are. They were even still hanging around as we were dressing out the second one.

Had that tag five years ago. Luckily it didn't get too cold while we were there. Awesome offer. -
My wife and oldest have late 27. They are the last hope this year since my early archery tag went unfilled.
