2012 ARCHERY COUES DEER AND MY FIRST ARCHERY ANIMAL
oz31p posted a topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
i began scouting for this hunt in April as i always do. mainly hanging trail camera and generally scouting the area. once the monsoon hit in late july i switched from an intermittent spring to a cattle tank by the middle of august the tank was full so i build a natural brush blind. august 15 every think looked perfect. the tank was still full and the deer were using in it often as every thing is the area had dried up. this area got heavy rain for 5 days prior to the opener. opening morning i left my house at 130am i was at my blind by 430. my tank was over flowing and every creek was a river in the area. so i haul butt back to my truck to get my tripod and my 15's. it was time for "plan b". by sun up i was sitting over what we call the grand canyon glassing a huge ridge till near 10. i packed up and headed into an area ive never been to. but it looked it would hold deer and im glad i had a chance to check it out but i did not see any thing but while hiking i bumped a mule deer. i could hear it bounce a way. so i make my way back to the quad. on my way out of there i glanced over toward the "grand canyon" and now the sun is behind/over it give me the best opportunity to look into the shade. so i go back to give it a quick once over. i sit down and set up my 15's and immediately i ve got two buck feeding near the top. i watched them feed a while and move into a group of trees and never come out. im sure they beded but i cant see them. i moved for every possable angle and i still dont see them. by now its 130 and i decide i aint got nothing else to do. so i plan a stalk. to get around this grand canyon i must move parrel about .5mile then i can get to the other side hike up and over this masive hill go over to the unseen side close the distance and pop back on the the side with the bucks. so i do. every thing gos good to this point just long and hot. so as im crest the hill back on to the side with the deer 2 white tails streak out in differant directions once toward the buck that are beded at this point im pretty sure that the bucks im after have feed over about 200y and i just spooked them and blew my stalk. but ive decide that i came this far i better see it thru. so i stalk all the way to the group of trees. when i get there no sign of the bucks so now im sure the deer i bumped early were the ones i was after. so i move thru the stand of tree just to see if i could find the beds. as i step just past the far tree i glance up the hill and i see a buck at 97y feeding. i jumped back. i swing back and use the other tree to block my approach i get to 67y but have no shot. i can see a juniper that if i can get to i can move to the left of an i should have a shot. by time i get there hes moved a little and i have no shot. now i can see the other buck and they are feeding but the 3 of us play cat mouse 20mins finally i moved to the right edge of a juniper and the bucks are at 43y. at this point the wind is swirling a little but there was very little wind to start with. they whistled at me 4 or 5 times and man is that loud. after 5 mins they when back to feeding so i stood up drew my bow and stepped clear of the bush, now theres 3 buck standing very close together blocking each other. but they are moving out as they know something is up. the big buck and the big fork move and leave a perfert shot to the still feeding spike and i nailed him. he when about 100y and pilled up -
I know theres a member here who can help me donate my rifle tag but i dont remember who.

Any rifle coues tag is a great tag. They all require hard work and long hikes. 6a is a great tag.
