White Mountain Trophy Elk Contest April 25th

I never saw where the stated they would call top 10 or anyone for that matter. DO you have a copy of those rules? because if yes that would be a breach of contract not just unethical. Just stirring the POT.

  13. UPDATED 10/06/2011 Well today is the day that we roll out, hunt starts Friday. This is my first ever Elk hunt, Bull or Cow. I hope for success, I have some really good friends that are comming out to help. Also, some CWT.com members have given some really good tips and direction. Will report results and pix when I get back. Wish me luck. p.s. If you see us stop by for a cold beverage and talk awhile. Good luck to all tag holders.

  15. Ok, Ok.. I will now tell the Story of the "Calamity Bull" the tale starts out harmless enough. Wednesday we arrive at GMU 3A/3C [which I have no knowledge of, Thanks Coach for tips}and set up camp on the slab on the hill, would like to inset photo here but can't get to load up.. We get to go out scouting that evening and hear some bugles and see alot of promising sign. Thursday morning we go out early to follow up on some leads, all prove to be good. Opening Morning: We[Jerry, T-dub, Steve-O, and Myself] head out in the darkness of night, to a spot for our first sitting. Shortly after daybreak we hear the bulls start to bugle. T-Dub see a Bull on the side of a hill moving in the thick pondo's but as soon as he sees him he disappers into the thick stuff not to be seen again by us. Then we decide to go back to camp as T-dub must leave this morning, Thanks T for making it out. After that we head back out and check out an area we wanted to hit in the morning but someone had beat us too, but we did not spot anything. So we moved on into a burn area looking for a tank, which we found. Then proceeded on a walk-a-bout into a wooded area in the middle of the afternoon on a eastern facing slope was a group of cows, and Steve-O says, "There are cows." So I start to get ready. When He says, "BULL!! he is laying down!" As I hear this I get the FEVER and all I can think is I need to get another round in the 7mm, even thu I already have 3 in it already, don't ask me why.. But then the cows whisk the Bull away, over the ridge into a bad area scent wise for us. I did not see his rack but Steve-O said his whale tails almost touched his butt. Missed op #1. Later we find a nice Flat Hill Top, that is covered with ELk sign, I don't think a sapling on it was untouched by a bull horn at some point it was like a WarZone. After sitting there for awhile thinking about the shot I should have got off, evening was creeping in and we started making our way back to the Artic Cat. So Jerry letts out a small bugle, and right away from 300yrds away we here it a loud bugle. As we make our way down to where the sound came from we catch a glimps of the creature thru the trees I see him, he is a shooter. But the sun is fading fast now, and all I can see throught the trees is approx. 8 inches of him from 200 yrds, front shoulder and small amount of neck. I place my crosshairs on him and squeeze the triger on the Ruger 7mm, and the Bull liturely DUCKS and inch of two. then turns and faces me, but all I can see at this point is both sides of his horns his body is behind a TREE. AHH I wait for what seems like forever, but was merely seconds and he turns again same shot. Bang!!! this time I'm sure he is hit, the bull quivers and then his four cows come and get him the heck out of there. As he runs away we bugle and he vigerously returns the bugle. And Darkness!! Day Two: So we come back in the morning for a morning hunt and check for blood none could be found, we found his tracks and followed for awhile and check for blood with non to be found. As for the morning hunt we had two bulls heading for us but then wind betrays us. Missed op #2. That afternoon we search somemore for the bulls and see some spikes but no shooters. WE get on the trail of a bull and cows but once again the wind betrays us. So that evening we go out to a nice little area near the Rez Line, we can hear what sounds to be a good bull right before dark but he will not show himself to us then, Darkness!! Day Three: Morning hunt we go to area of Missed OP#2 and hear and see nothing, wind was in our favor too not a good start for the day. So we move on to another spot and nothing.. So we decide to just look for new spots to check out later, and find a great sippy hole with some crazy tracks around it and some big wallows. We hike and sit and hike and sit and hike and sit, Nothing. where did the ELK go?? we saw some turkeys and Mule deer bucks. Jerry must go home due to stinkin work, but he leaves his artic cat for us to use on the hunt. Thank You Jerry your skills and generousity are unmatched. That evening we go back to the same spot as morning and set up, with NO activity. Ahhh where did they go!?!?!? after that at camp I was fustrated and depressed, after seeing and hearing bulls everyday to not seeing ONE and only hearing three bugels is dishearting to say the least. I was deturmind to make a change for the morning. I got out some maps{thx Ed Holloway high-tec hunting} and my GPS, and found a spot that looked good on paper and told Steve-O and Jim that is where we were going in the morning! Day Four: So we get up extra early as the area that we were to hunt was alittle bit more of a drive then we had been making thus far. As we arrive at the ridge line I have selected I kinda see what I wanted to see a big Burn Area. Yes. And I already hear what I want to hear Bugles!!! 5 or six differnt Bulls by the sounds of it!! What a great morning. As the sun comes up we can start to see more and more, Steve-O spots a bull faraway in the burn he rounds up and cow and does what bulls in the rut do, Twice!! Then on the near finge of the burn area and tree line 200 yrds away from us Steve-O sees a cow, so I get ready I'm ready for a bull to come and get her, as the cow moves forwards I get a glimps of two little nubs on His head, dang!!B ut the Bugles don't slow down they get better, but they seem to be moving to the south towards the Rez line. We had good wind so we decide to hopefully get to the other side of the hill and maybe see one and maybe get a shot off. Well we were too late they were REZed Up.. So then Steve-O goes to get the Artic Cat and Jim and I go exploring and start to hear what we think might be a Big Boy still on the first side of the hill in a super thick area. I am determined to get in there and find a small ATV trail so when Steve-O comes back with the Artic Cat we take it, my GPS shows a spot I want to check out on it so we are able to get near it. WE then walk to a nice observation point, and start looking at the area we where checking out earlier form a differnt angle, Big Boy is in that thicket grunting like a rodeo bull. I decide that I'm going to find a spring that I see on the GPS and go for a Walk. After a little bit of a walk I decide to see what Jim and Steve-O are up to so I start heading back to where the Artic Cat is parked, on my way I kick out 3 does that come hopping out 20 feet beside my the I hear some noise and Look and there is Does hopping right for ME!! With about 6 feet to spare the doe relizes AHH he should not be here and almost falls down making a 90 degree turn away from me, that was intersting! As I get closae to the Artic Cat Steve-O is squating near the rear of it with his arms up in the air and I yell to him I see you. He says, "No Bull!" I ask where, he says other side. Steve-O then proceeds to tell me about the bull and that he is thick. I ask if he thought it was a shooter? he said he would shot it if he had a Tag, good enough for me!!I tell him lets go get it. He still hyping the bull up at this point ; I tell him "Dude, don't tel me anymore about it jsut let me go shot it, Then we can talk about it!! your making me nervious, no more talk." OK. On the way there Steve-o Just as excited as I am starts whispering Dude he is really thick and.. I tell him Shut Up! I getting nervous. AS we get to the spot he locates the Bull again. As He directs me to the bulls location I get ready for a shot, then I see him!! Well his front left shoulder and part of his rack, he is laying down in the shade. OK here we GO!! Crack, crack... wth then 5 mule deer come walking below us, a bachlor group one 4x5, 3x3, 3x3, 2x2, and a 2x2 woow thought the cows spoted us but wind in our favor and deer I thnik help us out. He is 200yrds away down slope, I can make this shot. SO I place the crosshairs on his shoulder BANG!! Steve-O Yells alittle bit high. His cows start to move, I see him again BANG!! still high. I locate him again behind the cows who are starting to cross a burn area, he is behind some trees BANG!! high again WTF!!!! After all 8 of his cows cross the Burn here he comes out running This time I aim alot higher and lead him a bit BANG!!!!!!! silence for what seemd like forever..... BULL DOWN!!! I hear Steve-O say and Jim yells he's down and he's not going to get up!! I yell "YES!!" They tell me that when I shotn him he was in full stride and his shoulder colaps under neth him and he started sliding on his face about 10 yards DEAD!! We than wait and Steve-O goes back to Artic cat to retrive Knifes, camera, and such.. I'm standing there with Jim just High on Adrenilin and can't wait no more I tell him I got to go and then make a bee line not caring about being silent or disturbine any wild life down to where I last saw him and after alittle looking I find him laying up against a burned tree DEAD!!!! Wow What a feeling!! I cannot discribe it but I was so excited, I approach the huge animal and touch his Majestic Horns with my bear hands, WOW!! I let out a giant Yell of excitment and Joy!!!! Steve-O was right 5x6 and thick!!!!! He was a great bull for me!! AS Jim make his way down to my position I'm still wired up, and the pics are taken and then the WORK begins, I have to move this giant beast by myself as Jim is in his 70's WOW they are huge and heavy. Steve-O shows up after trying to find a road to get closer to the down Elk, but to no avail. To those who know me I can be kinda bull headed, and I insisted that I have seen a road that will get us closer. Steve-O says fine go find it..WEll I should have listen to Steve-O cause the road exsist but is so coverd with downed tress it is impassable. So I decide that I'll go get our meat pack cause it looks like its gonna but nothing but work form this point on. As I get to the Artic Cat I locate my cell phone and call my wife tell her of this proud moment in my life and thank her for her patiance and love. Then I hit the trail, which is small and tree lined. I call my Mom yes I am a momma's boy and tell her of the kill, while traveling down the atv trail at a speed of no more then five MPH the Artic Cat goes directly right into a tree BANG!!!! What the heck? I look and DAng the Tye Rod is broken the wheel is pointing the wrong way!!! WEll I'm along way form anywere so I have no choice but to go forth. I finally make it to a more traveled road and spot a four wheeler and flag him down. I explain what happened and he agrees to give me a ride to my camp a few miles away. Once we arrive at my camp site I fill his tank with fuel and tell him of my appreciation for his help!!! THANK YOU BILL BARNES of Overgaurd, AZ you are a life saver I would still be walking if not for you. After getting to Camp I realize that Jerry had told us that the trailer has an odd ball sized hitch and he had put the receive on the artic cat so it would not get lost, well can't get the trailer now oh well.. I drive my Long Bed Crew Cab F-250 down a 4wheeler trail to get back to our drop in point to hike in to start packing the elk out, WOW ever seen Austin Powers? had to make afew 90point turns. SO now I hike in with three rack packs for meat and my sawall to make work alittle easier. After 6 hours we got him all in the truck, now back to camp..and then to retrive the artic cat. Had to celebrate that night what a feeling I had such a high!!!!! Ok so now it is that dreaded time of every hunt BREAK CAMP. As we are cleaning up Steve-O tries cleaning the Dutch Oven and I hear him Yell I look and he burn the Crap out of his right thumb pointer and index finger Badly!!!! WE break camp and Jim decides to go down thru the Salt River Cayon, towing the Artic Cat to Safford. WE on the other hand are going toward Springerville to Rusty's meat shop to get scored for the Whitemountiantrophyelkcontest. Approx 13miles out of Showlow Steve-o and I hear and Bang and the Truck overheats and engine seems to almost die, we pull over. We let the engine cool and refill fuilds I think what the heck! I fear the worst TURBO!!! so we limp to Springerville along slow drive,we get Rusty's and since we are having vehical trubles decide to have Rusty process the Bull. Then on to the exciting part, Scoring.. WEll Rusty explains that they use a differnt scoring system then Boone and Corcket, for the contest. The Bull came in at a little disppointing but respectable 301.Even though if was missing it's 6 and 7th points and about 12 inches on the right side, But because of his thickness he scores well. I ask the men at Rusty's for a good auto shop, and they recomnded Springerville Auto, Thannk you. As we limped into Springerville Auto, I meet Max and asked him about the possiblity of fixing my truck today. WEll he kinda chuckled and said that he would n ot be able to get to it today, but ask why I thought it was my Turbo and I discribed what happened and then MAX said, "you said it poped then loss of power? I think I might know what it is Pop the hood." sure enough Max was spot on!! the Rubber hoses comming of the Turbo and to to the intercooler ruptured, Good news not turbo, bad news must stay night not see family one more day. Had a great night in Springerville, had a great time with the Gang at Booga's Cantina and food was great!! Next morning Max got the parts in about 10:30am and had us on the road by 11:30am Thanks MAX you saved our butts at at at fair price. SO here we go again on way to Safford. Well all goes good until alittle past Glenwood the truck starts heating up and the load is not that heavy, so I just try to make home. Well we make it to Three-way stop for a Mt. Dew and a tattoo magazine{rutine} as we cross the river and start up the big hill Temp goes thru the roof, we pull over and try to let it cool and refill fulids, and this process continues for the next 2 hours. HOME!!! Finally So after all this happened I have named "The Calmity Bull" because of everything that happened after the kill. But their is a silver lining in this story. First I got a kick butt bull for my first Elk hunt, Next that the Artic Cat tye rod broke on the atv trail and did not make it to the main road, where I prolly would have died if that happend at speed, than you lord. Then for Bill Barnes, from the moment I saw him till the next day I did not see another sole on the road anywhere. And to not have gone down the Salt River Canon, because if we did prolly would still be there, lol. I can't wait to do it again Had a great Tag, Great help, and Great Hunt!!!! Thanks CWT member Coach who gave me some solid advice about the unit that I was not familiar with. And to my Friend's, and my family for their support and patience during this hunting season and busy year from work.
