    rifle choice for the year

There is no place on this forum for crap like azcoushuntr wrote, we would all be better off if he would stay off of the forum. It may have been just a joke but it is very offensive to alot of people and there was no call for it. He needs to keep stuff like that off of here and if he can't he needs to have his membership pulled by Amanda. IMHO AG

    I gotta bad feeling

Bret, I have seen quite a few bears and bear sign in 16b, there are some good rugged canyons in there and have had some buddies call some in with predator calls. THere was a cinnamon brown working one of the canyons I was in on an elk hunt up in there. Was a real pretty color phase. Be prepared to face some rugged country!. AG

    how many coues?

I have shot 5, the biggest about 85, would have been better however he decided not to grow eyeguards that year apparently. The others all combined probably would amount to a grand total of 100. I have not rolled one over in a long time so the next one I see with antlers is getting a .150 grain nosler ballistic tip right in the boiler. AG

    Gett'n old

I have this really good training regimen. I wake up at 0500 and get into my work out clothes and then sit on the couch and think really hard about running. One time I almost broke a sweat!. For some reason my pants are alot smaller than I remember them being though. Which is funny because I feel like I am in great shape. It only takes me 5 - 10 minutes to catch my breath after climbing the stairs in the hospital and when I am wrestling with my kids I usually can last about 2-3 minutes before getting a head rush. I cant wait until my black river trip this year. It should only take me 3-4 hours to hike out, I really like to feel the burn in my quads, you know like there is a blow torch on them., if I am really lucky I will blow chunks. That is my all time favorite thing about the shape I am in , you can purge on command. Maybe that is why I dont see any deer anymore, I am huffing and puffing so hard that they hear me from a mile away!!. On a more serious note, anyone who goes into the season without making some effort to get into shape is putting themselves at a huge risk for heart attacks, hyperthermia, sprains, breaks and etc. Once the old body is fatigued nothing good can happen!! Your fav Rifle

My old standby has always been my 30-06, winchester model 70 sporter, had a leupold but put that on my new 300 wsm and put my burris back on the 30 06. That is the rifle that I rely on. I got the new rifle last year and it is a tack driver, unfortunately I did not get to shoot it at game last year, so I am not sure where it stands. I have a ruger 22-250 that is far and away my favorite for dropping coyotes. Have used it to kill 2 whitetail as well. So the real thing I guess is that I am an indecisive person, how can you not love any gun that shoots accurate and does what you want it to. ag
  6. I don't really think she expected that since she was a celebrity that her dog being coyote chow needed to be news. It is more a matter of the press not having anything else to stir up. The comment her neighbor made about not wanting traps because then you have to keep track of your dogs is classic, arent they supposed to be fenced in or chained? When I see dogs running loose around my property it is .22 to the gut time, I dont want them around my kids who are outside. I think she should set her coyote trap and if a neighbor dog gets caught in it tough! they could take care of it without her neighbors even knowing. It would also keep the neighbors from letting their dogs run loose. Oh well just another excuse to kill some more coyotes. AG

Private land owner closes Arivipa Canyon

Sounds like she should sell her land and compensate the victims of her son. What a moron. She raises a pedophile and then blames someone else. It is funny how it is everybody elses fault that her son is a pervert but she has no responsibility for it. Sure maybe he had someone molest him and that sucks(if its true) but he also had choices he could have made. I think that they should make an eminent domain grab for easement and the heck with her. She states that she would make the road impassable or BUILD A MOAT! Yeah right. It is too bad that someone elses problems always seem to be borne by non involved parties. AG

So. AZ forest may be closed!

I thought they just came over for their part of the American Dream!!?? Oh yeah they are not American , that is why they are called Illegal aliens. Yeah it sure is nice that they come over here and trash the outdoors and get put in prison, have babies, etc and we all get to pay for it. I would rather send a check to good ol Vicente Fox to improve the quality of life in old Mexico, but he would probably just buy some new Cowboy boots with it. There is truly nothing like sharing the great outdoors with your children and showing them deer, javelina, coyotes, wetbacks(did I just type that?? ), mountain lions and all the other naturally occuring wildlife in the outdoors of Southern Arizona and New Mexico. Coues Or Muledeer

I think that they had to make the new regs like they did. In 23 there were way to many hunters and with the coues populations being low if they were targeted you could decimate the whitetail population easily. I am glad they went to a draw as it will allow the populations to recover and probably result in better antler quality and buck retention. Now I just wish they would go back to a draw where you have to put in the money up front. There are way to many YAHOOS out there on 4 wheelers cruising around and ruining the hunt for others. When I was in 23 2 years ago it was like a train of hunters. All of these BEM(booger eating morons) were practically caravaning down the road and hunting from vehicles. I hope it weeds these jerks out. Anyway I will choose coues, coues and more coues when I put in. AG

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

bcoover, last I checked this forum was about hunting not opec. I don't know why you guys can't respect someone elses opinion about anything? I have seen more and more negative and plain MEAN posts. I mean whats the problem? Now that the hunts are through you have to channel your aggression through here? Before you know it this will be as bad as the discussion on CWD. It is simply ridiculous. Have some patience and some humor!!!!!!!!!!! AG

    Fed up

I agree with all of you guys. It may not be the most ethical way to hunt. Unfortunately it is allowed in some states and that is all that some of those hunters know how to do. The Catch 22 is we cant alienate these people and start infighting amongst ourselves. There are several agendas against hunting that would love to have us start picking on one another so that they can start picking off one state at a time. Think about this scenario, an antihunting group lobbyist just happens to check out this or some other website that states how that is not real hunting nor is it ethical. What do you think is going to happen then. Everybody who is on the posting site and is negative gets quoted as saying that "that hunting type is unethical and not fair". So they get the leverage of a group of hunters saying that hunting allowed in that state is unethical and then it is harder for the hunters in that state to keep hunting and how can a group of hunters fight against a group like PETA or the Humane society when they dont have the support of other hunters? It is easy to say yeah, well it is still not ethical, but there are alot of people who don't think any type of hunting is ethical and we already know how we feel about their opinions. Like I said, we fight against ourselves and we lose the fight against the groups who would put an end to hunting in general. AG

    AZ Resident Hunting in NM?

You may want to double check that, I don't think that is right , I know that 27 is a unit that you have to pick your poison in(ie muley or WT). 25 and 26 are the only ones that are just APRD(antler point restricted) . The youth only hunts are any buck 3 point on one side or better and those are the first hunts listed in each unit (if applicable). Not trying to be a know it all, but it would be real hard to explain to the warden why you had a youth only tag. AG

    AZ Resident Hunting in NM?

There are no deer in NM, so hunt somewhere else There are alot of good units in the southern and western part of the state for WT and carp. However they are all draw this year (even bow) so you need to have your stuff in by april. You can apply online. Lots of public land and if you want to see the fewest people and the biggest deer hunt the Gila wilderness(the 16's). If you are going for Coues, I would contact crazyaboutcoues, he is a sponsor on the website, Gila wilderness hunting. He will take care of you. Remember there are absolutely no whitetail in 23, 24, 26 or 27. It might be better just to save your money. AG

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

There is actually a page on the NMDGF website that shows new prices for resident and non resident hunts. I tried to attach it but I don't know if it worked. The address is as follows http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/department...ments/sb_77.pdf This is the first time in 10 years there has been a hike, but it seems fair, however should they make a habit of raising tags yearly it won't be much fun. Fed up

Lark, I really love it on those shows when they shoot a good buck and then they act like they haven't trailed it or anything but the camera is set up behind the deer so you can see the hunter approach and exclaim" Waaall gosh durn! here he is right here, look at the size of his rack! What they don't tell you is that we probably would never get the opportunity to hunt where they do. It would be nice to be able to hunt private property and film on it and then make TV shows wouldn't it. AG

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

You better just sell your kids, your truck and your house, because hunting is becoming a rich mans sport. You made a conscious decision to pay more for your trucks because you wanted to, would you pay exorbitant amounts for 4 days in the woods to hunt deer. Think seriously about it because for now it is the non residents, you are next. AG

    Fed up

Just to stir you up, How many of you sit over tanks or salt licks that you have set up to attract deer? I am not defending that way of hunting, but in lots of areas of Texas and etc the only way you can hunt is to set up your nice air conditioned blind with satellite tv and blast em from the windows during commercials. The issue is it is still hunting and they still pay their respective Game and Fish the fees which allow for habitat management and regulation of the deer herds. There really should not be any infighting between hunters when there are already so many organizations out to ban hunting. We all need to stick together regardless of what LEGAL types of hunting we participate in. If you don't like it don't watch it. AG

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

That was not my point, my point was they typically guide non resident hunters and more of the average joe non residents will not apply now due to the hunting fees taking a steep jump, and this will create more tag opportunities(less competition) for the USO hunters who really don't care about tag fees. AG

    piggies in 23

so any of you NM natives (or transplants) want to give me any suggestions on where to go for pig in 23. Was hoping i would see some on the archery hunt but all I saw were deer( ), My son is starting to think that hunting is just walking around in the woods with a rifle and eating lots of vienna sausages! I dont need any honey holes, just some suggestions. Thanks guys AG

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

lark, I agree that AZ has underpriced its elk hunts, for deer it is on par with NM, for elk it is much cheaper( was much cheaper!). I can see raising the fees so there is parity with the neighboring states but they are getting extreme with the elk tags. The deer tag cost for non resident will increase nearly 65%, that is a large jump. Now if they raise it over a period of years and adjust for 3% inflation rate that is fair, but Government agencies have this strange way of saying and promising one thing and then doing the complete opposite. AG
  23. Jason, I sure hope it does something. What kind of pig goes out and kills out of season or with a spotlight. They are WAY to lenient on poachers. If you get caught poaching you should lose hunting priviledges period and have all items used in the poaching confiscated and auctioned off, ( vehicles included). It will be interesting to see how well the great state of NM implements this program. AG

    AZ Hunt/Fish Fees

Just think, now that I probably will not buy a nonresident tag in AZ this year due to the increase(if it is as bad as I think it will be) in tag fees, USO will have one less person to compete with for their guided whitetail hunts. This should open the door for USO to step in and take all those nonresident tags that are not going to be applied for by the average Joe since they cant afford it anymore. Too bad it is the average guy who likes to slip across to AZ and hunt those whitetailed beauties who will pay. Oh well I guess it really depends on how much they raise the tags this year when they finally publish the fees for 2005. Welcome to AZ , the 2ND Home of USO outfitters. AG
