    Otters in NM?

j-, There is plenty of water, but what are they going to do when those otter make it into the streams that have the gila trout and spinedace minnow in it? they protect all those stupid fish only to let one of their most voracious predators loose in the river systems? Maybe they are vegetarian otters or they are going to train them to not eat fish What a bunch of morons ! AG

    The .223

DotShot, The military uses full metal jackets don't they, that makes a big difference compared to say a nosler partition, they just expand. So in the military 223 they are just teaching them to hit what they are aiming at and going from there. AG

    The .223

Way back in the good old days when I used to walk to school barefoot in 10 ft high snow drifts(used to snow in Flag back then ) I used to use my 22-250 for whitetail. It performed well, both deer I shot with it took one shot and it rolled them over immediately. As I grew more mature(fatter and balder) I realized that there is much less wind drift with a 150 grain bullet out of my 30-06 versus a 63 gr bullet out of my 22-250 on long range shots. Now I would not use less than my new 257 weatherby magnum , my other rifle for coues is the good old 300 wsm in tikka t3. Now would I use 223 for coues? Only if I absolutely had to and I would not take any shots longer than 250, oh and there is quite a difference in the 223 and the 223 wssm. my .02. AG

who hunts with ballistic tip ammo?

I use them in my 300 wsm and will use them in my new 257 weatherby, they are accurate as can be, but I would not use them on elk, that would be strictly nosler partitions. AG

Lots of us hunting 23 this year

J, What are you smoking? Your chance of getting an AZ sheep tag is less than your chance of Miss America showing up on your doorstep asking you to marry her!! It is time to quit fantasizing!! ag

Lots of us hunting 23 this year

sundevil, NM has the extra non resident tags for outfitters because good old Georgie Porgie of USO fame had soem ins with the previous GOV(Brother in law I think) I emailed our infamous district commish (Dutch Salmon) on the nm game and fish commission and he did not even send me a rejection email!! AG

    USO out of apache creek?

Nah, they are kind of like hemorrhoids, right when you think that they are finally gone you sit down and then your butt starts to hurt! or itch!!! AG

Lots of us hunting 23 this year

Actually, 10% go to non residents without an outfitter and 12% go to NR with an outfitter. I am a proud to be a Resident of the state of NM however, (arizona expatriate!! from Flagstaff) and I will be up there scouting after the 2nd week of October since that is when I am done with my WY antelope hunt. That unit is GREEN, that means the deer won't be real fat or healthy so you guys should all just stay home and watch the Price is Right Actually I am going to just wait for Sun devil to drive by around opening day and then I will just see where he goes , I have some trespass rights on some property south of mule creek so will see what that country holds. broadheads for elk?

I have an elk hunt in NM (2nd hunt 16B), and I am changing broadheads and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good elk broadhead. I shoot 100 gr heads, I have used mechanicals the last few years but have never really trusted them after arrowing a spike in AZ at 10 yards only to have the broadhead o ring not slide down and I hit it a little high and lost the bull(never found him, ravens, or his bones). The arrow went completely through him and when I picked up the arrow the blades were right where they were when I let the arrow fly. I really do not want to go through that again , so have at it. thanks AG

    Unbelievable Dept. Mess UP!!!

So the whole point of this site is hunting, how, when, why, where(sometimes ), with what etc. It seems like after every draw everybody complains about it and blames the nonresidents for taking their tags(just judging from the az hunters coming to NM this year vs. Nm hunters to Az the AZ hunters came out way ahead and I know there are alot of NM hunters not going because their tag went to a non resident since we give out 22% of our tags to nonresidents!) You guys should quit your whining and moaning and singling out groups of people and deal with the fact that you were not drawn(regardless of the reason)! We are all here to support and help one another in the great sport and passion of hunting and whining and moaning about who got tags and who did not does not do that. The other thing is everybody talks about sending petitions for this and for that about the draw, but it seems to me that there are alot of sayers of the word , but few doers! I respect the doers for their diligence and ignore the others ! If you want to have input you need to GIVE IT!! Remember we all put in with the hope of getting drawn, some did and some did not, that is why it is a draw! It happens every year and will regardless if it is hillbillies in TN or Crackers in Virginia doing the drawing, and there will always be people not happy, well suck it up and get out your shotgun! But quit bashing the people who put in and did it right and got drawn, they say hunting is 90% luck and 10% skill and this year was not your lucky year! AG

    What would you do??

better yet, leave those puppies strapped up there and just cut the legs off of them as high as you can reach! Isn't that considered abandoned property anyway? I say make them disappear or be on them first thing in the am on opening day! That would really teach em a lesson. AG

    Tags?

wow, I have had all of mine for 2 weeks!? I guess it is because you are from AZ and they are still deciding on whether or not you deserve them! Oh by the way I was just kidding , dont have mine yet either ! They like to take their time in sending them out. AG

    More wolves

There are definitely wolf in NM on the western border I have seen them in 23 while whitetail hunting. Outdoor Writer-- How do they insure that there are no indiginous species in the streams before they poison it? There are definitely minnows and such that are native to those streams that get poisoned, right? Also in NM there are streams that the Gila trout is being reintroduced to and they are closed and have been for several years. What it all comes down to is that some support the reintroduction of wolves and some dont and we all have to agree to disagree. AG

    More wolves

The problem I have with the wolves is that they are not successfully establishing themselves and they have to be baby sat or killed for interbreeding or killing livestock etc. It was brought up that the elk were reintroduced and that is exactly right, they were reintroduced and thrived with little to no outside intervention. These wolves are a joke!, If they can not make it on their own, so be it we tried, they failed, there is no longer a niche in the ecosystem for them, tough. NIce try but they should just write this off as a failure, quit wasting all the time money and effort that could easily be used somewhere else(like proving that the mexican spotted owl nests in trees other than dead standing oak). If those knotheads would just admit failure and say hey , we gave it our best shot, then this would be a moot point. Those wolves have been given every opportunity to thrive and have not, therefore it was not meant to be. Oh by the way, the trout reintroduction in the GIla at least in NM has resulted in countless miles of river and stream closures to fishing and use of piscicides to eradicate non native species(that poison must be selective or something, it only kills non native species!?,) we were also promised that those streams would be reopened for fishing, but as of yet there is not even speculation of reopening those streams to angling. It all just leads to decreased fishing and hunting opportunities for those of us who support these stupid programs with the purchase of our hunting licenses and habitat stamps. Kind lf like taxation without representation! oh well that is my 2 cents worth. AG

    More wolves

interesting thread, but I have it all figured out now. I am going to find someone here in NM who's dogs died of parvo, then I am going to go get a big bag of dog crap from their house. I will then make it my mission to sow parvo infected dog crap across the West to eliminate the scourge of the Mexican grey wolf. Yes, you may call me Johnny Crappleseed! AG

    More wolves

TLH, How did they prove that the wolves were getting rid of the coyotes in the areas that they are in? Did the coyotes leave? Or were they eaten by the wolves? If you have ever gotten to see a pack in the wild, especially the smaller ones, they are like big stupid dogs and will walk right up to your truck and pee on the tires. They may be genetically pure wolves, but they must have bred out the brain very effectively. Wolves are all around bad for AZ and NM. AG

Sports Optics Demos and Used Deals

Is Amanda getting a cut of this? Are you a sponsor of the site? Just wondering. AG
  21. So New Mexico Game and Fish actually has a survey on their web site asking our opinion of whether or not they should continue with antler point restrictions, change them or leave them the same. The choices are aprd which is 3 points on one side or better, forked horn one antler must have 2 points or any buck. They give some of the pros and cons of each. But this is our opportunity to have some input on it hopefully, just wondering what the general feeling of antler point restrictions is on the site. Would also be interested to hear what Amanda's opinion of it is. Thanks AG

    antler point restrictions

SunDevil, , I am strictly a spot and stalk hunter for whitetail, however I have shot a deer that I glassed up from about 300 yards and it was moving, it looked good so I dumped him, I got over to him and he was a small racked 2 point with eyeguards and was standing if front of a bush that just happened to make his rack look huge. Point is I never looked again at the rack once I decided to shoot. If you are hunting and you see a buck jump up in range and he looks good , Well I for one will shoot(may not hit, emphasis on shoot ) , my point was is that are some large framed older deer that are only 2 points and will get you into trouble with the antler restrictions. It does not happen alot, but with my luck... AG
  23. fatfootdoc

    antler point restrictions

sundevil, Pretty slim yes, but how stupid would you feel if you shot one like that and there was an antler point restriction, would you turn yourself in or would you let it rot? ag
  24. fatfootdoc

    antler point restrictions

red rabbit, that would sure explain the rough ride we have in NM. I think that there should be no point restrictions, let the podunks come out and blast away at the first antlers they see and leave the big guys for those who want to hike out and work for the bigger deer. This anter point restriction is just a pain in the butt anyways. If I am out hunting and see a large framed deer I will shoot first and would hate to get there and have it be an old buck with a large forked rack. AG
