I told them both that if they did not pass they had to wait until my 7 year old was ready to take it because I was not sitting through the class again next year! So they both wanted to hunt this upcoming year so they studied for it. I would be happy with cow elk or bull elk for her, she will have fun regardless, and the meat will be good from a cow., I just hope she gets a chance to go. I am going home tonite and we are sitting down with the regs to see what they would like to hunt, I am definitely putting them in for the burros youth hunt and my son wants to hunt elk next year with my muzzle loader in 15, but I am not sure he is ready for that yet, of course with bipod and by using 100 gr instead of 150 gr of powder he could probably handle it. I am way excited for their first hunts!! AG

I think that is very cool, but it would be even cooler if they could sneak up on em, capture them and tie the dirty pieces of garbage over and ant hill in the hot sun and let those jerks rot!! It truly would not be a waste of humanity to let some drug dealers disappear FOREVER!! AG

J-, It may be cow but the instructors told all the kids that it was for trophy bull elk Hopefully she gets to get a tag and I get the chance to find out. I would be happy with either meat wise, but it would be awesome if she got to pop a nice bull her first year of hunting. ag

what kind of smoke pole is this?
fatfootdoc replied to jamaro's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
J- When I was in med school in IA, I shot a buck at 200 yards with a cabelas hawken 50 cal, went through the white neck patch through the heart, left lung and broke 3 ribs left side before stopping in the hide. I used 90 grains of loose grain pdr and a 300 gr bullet. Open sights also, when I sighted it in I sighted in at 100 and 150, however I did miss the biggest whitetail I have ever seen at 10 yards due to a hangfire(cap discharged, powder did not for 4-5 seconds, scared the you know what out of me even though I knew it was coming!) Traditionals are a blast to shoot but are a bugger to clean! AG -

I hope you kill that bad boy WILLIAM TELL!! good luck Tommy. AG -
Boy, there are some changes this year, dont know if I really like the 3 tiered archery elk hunts, the primitive weapon burro mtn hunt is a good idea though. Really wish they would have left the 3 point restriction on whitetail, but oh well. It sure is nice to start figuring out what to put in for again though. AG

Oh come on now guys, when I was in High School at good old coconino in Flagstaff the ladies in the cafeteria serving lunch all had those and they had big nasty black hair growing out of them!! They always seemed to have the biggest one on the tip of their chinny chin chin. One time I was eating a burrito at the cafeteria and found one of those big black hairs in it. I used it to floss after I finished the burrito. Worked really well!!!! ag

ITS SOON! WHERE ARE THOSE PICS!!! AG

I also have the leupold 4-14 with the Boone and Crockett reticle, that coupled with my Leica rangefinder made my 477 yard shot this year a double lunger with no real difficulty. I have switched to leupold on all my primary rifles. AG

[so on Friday afternoon went out to 23 with 3 of my other buddies, 2 of which have never killed Coues. Glassed Friday and did not see anything with horns and found some new posted NO trespassing land on places we had hunted before , Woke up Saturday and hunted until noon and all I we saw were some doe and ALOT of atv hunters. (Why in the world, when you are riding 2 people on an ATV-- one rider and one shooter, in a caravan of 3 atv's, would you wear Camo? They need to make camo patterns that match all major brands of 4 wheelers-- ok off of the soap box) had to come in for meetings on Saturday and Church on Sunday, went out again late Sunday. Woke up bright and early Monday morning and went with one of my buddies to glass a large bowl. We were up there before light and glassed right away, my buddy Justin was above me about 50 yards, well of course mother nature called and after I was finished I was getting ready to move up to him when he says through the GPS RINO-- there are some deer looking right at you on the hillside, so there I sit for the next 10 minutes. I look up at him and he is looking through his scope and then BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. I radioed him and he did not answer but was standing up so I thought BUCK DOWN!, Then He radios me "Get up here and help me!"" So me being the fat bald guy I am run up the hill as fast as possible(about 1 mph) and am heaving and looking for O2!! He tells me shoot that thing and I told him I would range it for him but I was heaving to hard to shoot, took me 1 minute just to steady myself-- 477yards. By then I could lay down, and he says shoot it, told him no he needed to but that I would back him up. So we got good rests and the deer just stood there broadside, he fires, misses , I fire and dont. buck down keeping the 257 weatherby streak alive, 2 shots 2 kills. Justin dropped his rifle helping me so used mine this morning and I hear him on the radio, man there are some deer at the tank above us, one has antlers!! He could not range him but I knew it was about 600 yards to the tank and told him to stalk up 200 yards and let her rip, he did and said I think I got a little 3 point!! But there are 2 other bucks up there standing next to him , so I ran up with Pat another buddy of mine and we managed to spook them he got off a shot(actually 8) at a 2x 3 that was about 75. Justin meanwhile locates his downed buck and says, yep a little 3 point-- He lifted it up and I was like man you killed a huge one-- thought it would go about 91-92 and it was his first coues!! We had an awesome hunt and 2/4 killed, 3/4 shot at a buck, the other hunter passed up some bucks. But man it was great being with him on his first kill! AG

We did not really see anyone else once we were way out on the points, but the roadhunters would drive way out on the points and turn around. When we were glassing up doe they would bail into thick stuff when they heard the putt putts(ATVs) coming up the roads. We saw about 15 does all told and 4 bucks. AG

Yeah, we had a great time out there, I had my little girl with me on sat, but all we saw were atv's and some doe. She had fun, wish she would have been there on a kill. Both of those deer were shot with my 257 weatherby and leupold B and C reticle, man that makes things easy when you know the range! The first one at 477 yards went 2 steps and down with lung shot and the bigger one at 400 was rolled with a heart shot, that thing was vaporized. used 100 grain ballistic tips and man did they perform. both deer were complete pass throughs, the big one was through both shoulders. I was thinking of going back to Sierra SP BT's, but am now reconsidering the switch. AG

Made it out to 23 this pm for some scouting, took my kids(all 4 of them) with me for the chance to spend some time with them. We stopped to glass and I let them get out of the truck and I walked a fence line to get a better view of some bluffs I am planning on hunting. My kids were being kids, slamming doors etc and playing and trying their hardest to be quiet. I glassed the ridgeline and saw a few deer, looked like coues but unsure and then I noticed movement in the bottom of my glasses and there was a herd of carp about 60 yards away that had fed up out of a small draw. There were 3 bucks and 2 were shooters, one a 4x 3 but pretty spindly and the other a 3x 2. My kids all came over and had a look and then went back to playing and those deer never spooked for 10 minutes, then I saw the larger buck look up and stamp a little so I turned around and my 2 youngest daughters 5 and 7 were running up the hill chasing butterflies , they did not stick around long after that. Oh did I mention it was muzzleloader season and these deer were on public land? Anyway my kids had a blast and so did I , couldn't really get out and cover country but saw some deer nonetheless. I am taking my oldest girl with me on this hunt, she is 9 so hopefully she will see some more deer. Oh and she also learned that you never pull up your britches after using the facilities of mother nature without standing up first, she filled her pants with seed pods by pulling them up while she was still in the action position if you know what I mean , you think a 9 year old can wiggle around too much wait until you see one with underwear full of little stickers!! Scott, YOU ARE AN ANIMAL!!!!!! I don't know if I would have been up for that! Congratulations, hope my hunt this weekend is not as tough as yours was!! AG

Wyoming antelope hunt(all 22 minutes of it)
fatfootdoc posted a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
So I went to WY with my boy to hunt antelope. Met up with a hunting buddy I had not seen in 7 years up there. He came over from Oregon to hunt with us. It was an awesome hunt, I tagged mine in 22 minutes and on the way to the processor and about 1 mile from where I connected he shot a 14 5/8 with 7 in bases and good mass to the paddles. We were down the mountain and the goats were in the cooler at the processor by 1030. I used my new toy 257 weatherby and now I have a new streak to uphold with it, one shot out of it and one kill My son was there for both kills ( he is 10) and after I shot mine I heard him yell " that was awesome" when he saw it fold. That pretty much made my hunt, oh and we shot both bucks on the 3rd day of the season in public land, since he was patrolling hunts in OR and I had my surgery day on Wed. The 100gr bullet took out the liver and the left lung. I am trying to attach a pic but it is way to big and I have downsized it , hopefully it will post this time. Now if only Whitetail were that easy to hunt! ag -
I used to hunt down there the last few years I lived in AZ, I think were I still to hunt down there I may just have to drink those black jugs and recycle some water(albeit salty and mildly yellowish in color) back into those jugs for em. Of course it would really suck if someone had the same idea I did only before me, or after me for that matter. It is a real shame to see it come to this. AG
