    Her fist catch

those smiles are awesome, my youngest caught her first fish at big lake at the beginning of April. My middle girl (7) caught her biggest fish ever!! This was for her science fair project, she won grand champion for "What is a trouts favorite bait" brought a tear to my eye, here are some others --- my oldest girl the only thing that she will be kissing for the next 13 years!!! my boy We had an awesome time , oh and the favorite bait was worms. dogs

It definitely depends on the dog, I had one get bit in the face and her face swelled like a balloon and she started to choke on her saliva, she needed the antivenom, my other dog , a long hair, got bit on the head but she did not need anything and was fine. At 350 bucks a pop I dont think you want to be giving antivenom as a preventative before going out in the field. It is strictly for after bites, it is not like a vaccine. Christian, I would be interested to see what the effects of your extractor are, I am a foot and ankle surgeon and do see some snake bites and I typically dont recommend them as the studies that we see show they are really about 0-1% effective. Once the poison is in there, its in there, most people just cause more damage by trying to suck it out(in various ways!) or by cutting the fang punctures. There are a surprising amount of dry bites and this may be behind the stated effectiveness of your venom extractor, oh and did they do trials with it using themselves Dont expect miracles out of your extractor if you ever do get bit I guess, the best treatment is to remove yourself from the field and deposit yourself at the hospital!!! 257 Weatherby Magnum

First awesome caliber, I bought one last year and it is my favorite rifle hands down. But there is no such thing as cheap ammo so you should really try to reload for it. AG

    New issue

So in the event that something like this passes , how in the world are the G and F going to be able to tell if you are hunting over a rancher placed salt lick or one you put there yourself? When I lived in Flag and hunted 6A, the ranchers were pretty creative with where they put there salt blocks and mineral licks. I can just see them using it as an excuse to ticket a legal hunter. Are they going to GPS ever single lick or what? Hope you guys can band together on this and keep it from coming reality in AZ, once you lose one battle the chances of winning the war greatly decrease. AG

    oryx draw

Well according to the dates in the proclamation we should find out anyday now if any of us are going oryx hunting. I put in for on range and off range and hopefully this year I break my streak of 0 for 5 years. I feel like I am putting in for elk in AZ with that kind of statement?!. Good luck to all of you. AG

    mexican grey wolf talks

mattys, They must let you guys have more free reign over there, the NMGF proclamation states that we cant harass them unless they are attacking livestock and then spells out that domestic animals are not livestock. Glad we are on the same page about the deer being more important than the wolves, you were scaring me. AG
  7. Did any of you NM hunters , especially in Grant CO. see the article about the grey wolf meetings in the paper? Ty Bays and his group are getting a meeting with the game and fish commission to discuss grey wolf management. The most striking thing to me about the whole article is what a moron our district commitee member, the venerable Dutch Salmon is. His final statement was I dont see why wolves and people cant get along?! What a friggin moron, he talks about wolf populations in MN and how they were fine up there, well they tag more deer in a hunting season up there than we actually have in the entire state of NM!!! What a butthead! He lives in NM now, when was the last time this joker actually went out in the field and went hunting? Our deer and elk herds in a lot of the units are not exactly thriving. He is totally unreachable as he does not respond to emails or phone calls, he is really a hemorrhoid essentially, you kind of forget its there until it hurts. Unfortunately he has the potential to really hurt us. If we cant get our commission to respond then where do we go from there? The grey wolf is a disaster to AZ and NM, they are not even purebred for crying out loud?!! If they were gila trout they just use piscicide on them and kill them off for not being a pure strain!! Of course then they would close all the streams in the area to let them recover, ah but I digress-- moral-- we have commission members who do not represent their constituents well and who are non responsive unless forced to be and it is handicapping us, I know there are much better candidates than him out there. mexican grey wolf talks

mattys281, that was actually a hypothetical situation about how seeing predators in the wild is great until they eat your dog. And no you cant throw rocks or anything at the wolves as they devour FIDO because that is considered harassment! You are not allowed to harass mexican grey mutts unless they are attacking your livestock. So all you can do is sit and eat your orville redenbacher and watch your precious family mutt get his innards made into outards. Now in the real world, at least with my pets, there would be a dead grey mutt. ag

    mexican grey wolf talks

Mattys281 Nobody is advocating bounties on predators like what happened on the Kaibab. If you like to see predators in the wild that is fine, how about them eating your pets in front of you and you just sitting back and eating some popcorn and cussing because you cant touch them if they are eating your domestic pets. Think about that, and then if you have kids think about them sharing your popcorn with you while they watch a frigging hybrid "WOLF" eat your dog. The lion population is good enough to manage our deer herds without any help, I don't think we are going to be seeing a die off of deer akin to the kaibab disaster in the near future from overkilling predators. Lark, You are right on the money about those dogs with some wolf blood in them. They should publish DNA on them so we can see just how pure they really are!! Oh and Mr. Salmon is still a Moron and he missed the boat by so much that it was already back in harbor before he realized it had left. AG

"Idiot" New Mexico Game and Fish

I had ELITE MORON, I hope the computer was describing our wonderful Silver city commissioner Dutch Salmon who never responds to the emails I send him!!. I hope they are RANDOM!!? choices, ag Oh and there are no deer in unit 23, especially whitetail, so dont bother putting in there. Put in for 27 it is a really easy draw and there are alot of whitetail. AG

    draw for deer

SO, if you want to make sure you get drawn, Call the game and fish dept the day after the deadline and ask them why the H--- they have not posted results yet!! that is guaranteed to get you your first choice on your hunt application. ag

  13. Has anyone seen the article about Jim Zumbo on msn. He is an editor for Outdoor life and a well respected columnist(well was is the proper term now I guess) He lectured for the NRA and was a remington test shooter. Well he made a comment about prairie dog hunting with assault rifles and then said they were actually terrorist rifles!! He has come out and apologized ad nauseum but he "Resigned" from OUTDOOR LIFE, and was fired by all of his other corporate interests, (the official word is they cut any and all ties with him). This is a man who wrote one of the first ever columns in Outdoor life? What was he thinking? I feel like the reaction has been overkill, everyone makes mistakes, but he wrote his opinion and now has been crucified. Was the reaction to strong, was it the NRA's response to election year politics to send a strong message to anti gun politicians, or did he just get hammered? He definitely should have known better to label them as terrorist rifles especially since he WAS working for the NRA. I would be interested in Mr. Quimby's or T. Mandiles thoughts on the subject as they are writers. I dont think I would use one for hunting but killing coyotes or prairie dogs, give me the ammo box and get out of the way AG
  14. Hi Guys and Gals, Just wondering if anyone has used the leica rangefinding binoculars, I noticed that they started making a 15 power rangefinder that is actually about the same weight as the swaro 15 power without range finder. Thought that it would make an ideal coues glasser to be able to have that magnification and then a range finder built into it. I really have no experience with the leicas other than the fact that the ultravids/trinovids did not fit me well when I compared them to swaros at Sportsmens. I have a leica rangefinder though and love it , very accurate. Thanks for your input. AG

    What was Jim Zumbo thinking???

Travis, I was not trying to start a fight with you and did understand your point, what I was pointing out is that we need to put ourselves in his shoes. All of us have said or done something we immediately regretted, we probably also were able to apologize for it and be forgiven with little loss of our success in personal or business endeavours. My point is that you would not be to happy to be in his shoes right now, neither would I. AG Oh and one other thing, the saying is don't judge another until you have walked a mile in their shoes----Then you are a mile away and have their shoes ag

    What was Jim Zumbo thinking???

Travis, The infighting that has resulted and will continue result from this statement , among hunters at least, will be much more damaging to us as a whole than what the anti's will come up with. Rembrant was completely right about polarization. In another context look at what comments you get from someone who spots and stalks makes about someone who sits in a stand over a corn feeder in Texas. On this site even there have been many derogatory remarks made about this type of hunting. However, according to TX state law it is a legal method and therefore we should not argue and call names, we should appreciate the fact that they are out there hunting and we can quietly keep hunting the way we prefer. When we weaken from within, that is when the sport of hunting is truly endangered and unfortunately this has happened to a certain extent in this case, rather than let Mr. Zumbo apologize he was crucified, granted he made a misstep but he immediately tried to correct it. I in particular don't feel that he did deserve what he got , and neither would you if you were in his position, and if you deny that I would unfortunately have to say you were full of it. Nobody wants to see their livelihood go up in smoke. AG

    What was Jim Zumbo thinking???

When I read about what he wrote I figured he had to have meant something less vilifying about the assault rifles, I feel sorry for the guy because the impression that I got was that he was indeed a sacrificial lamb and was jumped on from every corner to be made an example of for what many thought was opposing assault rifles. One of the main reasons that I never really wanted to join the NRA was that I felt that in some things they were almost fanatical and that it was not really appropriate, dont get me wrong, I feel the whole message that they are about is appropriate, they like other things I support have some ideals that are slightly different than mine. I finally joined up again a few months ago and then someone who I respect in the Outdoor lit. gets crucified by them. A better reaction would have been to let him retract what he said and then restate it so it was what he meant to say. He even said on the post I read that what he wrote did not come across like he meant it. The thing that really kills me is how quick he was thrown to the wolves by EVERYBODY!! Compare this to Hollyweird, Mel Gibson gets pulled over for drunk driving and blames all the worlds problems on the Jews and gets nailed, but then apologizes and things start to right themselves again. Micheal Richards using the N word in a comedy show, what happens, he goes on TV to apologize and is sincere and away we go. Mr. Zumbo was never even given the chance to apologize and had everyone he had supported turn on him. Sure he made a mistake, but haven't we all? Was it bad enough that his livelihood is now gone and he will probably have a bitter taste in his mouth about the rest of his life? I dont think so, this could have really brought the support for assaut rifles to light in a positive way and instead will probably cause a divisive rift in gun owners, I share Mr. Mandile's opinion on this, it will not be galvanizing in any way. I for one will still continue to read Mr. Zumbo's columns if and when I find them, I am willing to forgive a slip of the keyboard and forget about it!! AG

    hunter safety 100%

Kevin, Thanks for clearing that up for us and she will be just as excited to hunt a cow as a bull since she has never hunted before other than tagging along with me.
  19. So my 2 kids just finished hunter safety and my 9 year old daughter aced the written exam so she gets put in for a chance at a trophy elk hunt up north, I hear that it is an awesome hunt and it is fully guided and all expenses are paid, I sure hope she gets it. . I think every kid under 12 that gets 100% gets put in, but she was the only one in her class(including adults) that got 100%. My 10 year old boy got 98% but my daughter has bragging rights. I am excited to put them in, I was not going to put her in but the effort she put into her test deserves it so hopefully we will have some good youth hunts to go on in the fall. AG

    hunter safety 100%

you scared me! So I checked the regs and all it says is hunters under 18 have to have a hunter education card and be accompanied by an adult. The instructor knew she was 9 and still signed her certificate to mail away so hopefully that means she is good to go, she will turn 10 by the hunts anyway. AG

    Whats In A Name

Well about the time I started visiting this site, I was at the Gym thinking how I was the Phattest foot and ankle surgeon in all of the vast metropolis of Silver City NM. Well it was early morning and I was working the back and bi's and I had my weight belt on good and tight and I strutted over to grab a 10 lb dumbbell to do one arm rows and happened to pass in front of the macho mirror(to watch your muscles get pumped as you work out), so I had to stop and bust some flex in the mirror and admire my full length spandex work out pants(padded in all the right areas) and then I realized that with my weight belt nice and tight like that around my finely honed abdominal keg(no six pack here guys!!), I looked like someone squeezing a marshmallow as tight as they could around the middle, or actually more like someone pinching dough while making rolls , Then I realized that I had earned the title of FATFOOTDOC what do you expect from a 238 lb 5ft 10 in doughboy!! So there you have it. AG

Casey, just sell your rifles, the way you shoot you would do better with a semi automatic sks and a banana clip so you could have some major ammo spray. Then you can afford the tripler to check out the size of the spikes on your next deer!! ag
