    Fallon NV Fur Sale Results

The Fallon Sale is a limited entry sale. Not everyone get in. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. For bobcats, it is usually the best quality and they often get the best prices. This does put a ray of hope for The Kingman sale. Don't expect last year's prices but we'll hope to see a visible difference from the ATA's average bobcat price. There is no market in the garment indsutry for a lion pelt. They must be used elsewhere.
  2. *Moderators- move this if you do not want it here. Getting the word out. I got rid of half my cages this year and am going to sell the other half once trapping season ends in 3 days. Next year I will go back to 100% foothold traps. I have 10 Briarpatch Cages with the most recent pan upgrades and lock upgrades. Most of them are in clusters but I have a few that are loose since I had 2 stolen this year. This last year a 4 cage cluster was $440. On Bob's website it says next year they are going up to $500 since there is such high demand. I will sell my 10 cages plus at least 10 danglers (in various condition) plus black plastic for the cages (in assorted condition), plus the metal C slips to hold the plastic on the cages plus a container with all the assorted hardware that the cages use (in case something comes off or works loose) plus 10 pieces of tan carpet that fits behind the pan to hold the urine scent longer for $800. Contact me if interested. scott@francom.us or PM me here. First person with the money after Saturday gets them.

    Animal ID- Fox or Coyote?

Last night drove up and had a big grey fox in the headlights on the road 50 yards from the cage. Probably the same one in the trail camera pictures above. I think it is a fox. Big ears and the line of color difference mid-body. Those legs are long though and coyote pups have big ears. Area the cage is in has fox in it. I have shot them in years past here. WampusCat put your videos on photobucket and there will be a link to post them on a forum. It's quite easy.
  5. Have lots of guys PMing me asking about purchasing smaller groups of cages rather than the whole 10. My first option is to sell them all together and be done with it in 1 giant leap. If we go a few weeks with no buyer from the 3 websites where I have posted them I'll sell them in smaller groups. I understand many people don't want or need 10. Watch this thread and I'll let you know when I opt to break them down into smaller groups. Another option- I'll trade it all for an AR-15 .17 Remington upper.

Poaching a lion - updated with pics

How that archer can walk around getting a shot off with the spartan shield on his shoulder all the time is quit incredible.
  7. On Saturday I took out a new AR-15 and zeroed it into about 1" at 100 yards with Federal Premium Law Enforcement 55 grain Nosler ballistic tip bullets. 3240 fps at muzzle - 2870fps at 100 yards. Call a coyote in on 2nd stand. Watch it come in at a run, turn a corner around a tree at 30 yards and run straight at me. I have my scope zeroed on his chest and pull the trigger. WHAP! You know you've got a solid hit. Coyote falls back on its haunches and begins yelping. I watch as it flips around a bit, gets to its feet, and runs off. I sat there a bit thinking about the fps and energy that bullet carried at 30 yards as it hit the coyote dead center in the chest and all that came to mind was...

    Fur prices

Update. Communicated with 2 more buyers today (aside from Dennis). One was at NAFA making purchases. Both said medium sized cats 28" to 32" with wide good colored bellies are in demand so we are going to make a change to the initial policy. The size limit is now down to 28" bobcats. Smaller than 28" is considered a kitten by fur sale standards FYI. Both buyers said to not accept flat cats to the Briarpatch Fur Sale in Kingman. Also milk stained female cats are a waste of time to bid on so keep those out as well. We agree. They also concurred that sellers need to consolidate their same size/grade bobcats into 1 larger lot rather than think they're going to get a better price putting them in their own lots 1 at a time. It is a waste of buyer's time and effort to think they are going to sit through 700 auctions of 1 cat lots and sellers get an honest price. Now... better for the sellers of smaller bobcats and better for the buyers who right now noticed a demand for them.

    NAFA March Fur Sale Date

NAFA commission goes down the more fur you sell, so your total commission might start out at 10% but by the end (if you have a lot of fur that sells over the coarse of multiple sales) it's 6% and it gets reimbursed to you. It's a mess in my opinion. THEN to top it off, to get your commission rebate, if you waited all season, you need to put a piece of fur in the following season to get it.
  10. Those of you looking to turn in fur at NAFA they moved the March sale date to March 24th. Time enough to try the Kingman sale and last ditch effort, send your fur away to NAFA. Downside is shipping costs and not getting your fur check right away. Upside is you have no other choice after the BPF sale on March 8th!

Claiming the highest paid average is nice but if that is a sale's only gimic, they're hurting. The BPF sale has multiple positives. 1% sales commission and $20 enterance fee being the most significant. I gave the ATA several hundred dollars of my profits. I am not complaining about that. With my money they will step up and fight the real fight when the Anti's come knocking (as they have before). They also help neighboring states when their trapping rights are in jeapordy. Problem is I need a place to sell my fur after the ATA sale- choices NAFA or BPF sale. I don't want to wait for 3 months for a NAFA check if I can help it. You need to rememebr that a national fur buyer, Dennis, is part of the Brairpatch Fur Sale team. He tells us that bobcat fur buyers do not want to travel across the country to bid on short hairred crappy cats. Hense we saw buyers not even wanting to be the starting bidder on a lot of sub-200 pelts and all the buyers wanting to get in on the bidding of the 18 bobcat pelt lot (mine). Time vs effort spent. A buyer wants to spend his time going to a bobcat sale where he stands to make the most money. The best cats, the most desirable cats, all lined up on tables for bidding. More than 1 buyer tells us he wants to see better fur on the table. We are just going to facilitate this. Remember- since we don't want your money, we can limit what comes in the door. There will be 2 knowledgable people 'helping' fur sellers lot their fur correctly (we will not be having 5 1 cat lots under 1 ticket) and 'helping' sellers understand their fur does not meet the requirements for this year's sale. No biggy, sell it in the parking lot. I personally will help anyone facilitate a sale outside the building. I will introduce you to a fur buyer and get the ball rolling for you to make a deal 'behind the scene'. Just ask me. You are correct- it's a judgement call by someone. Is your fur in or out? I can promise you that we will be as fair and consistent as possible. We want this to be a good experience for both buyers and sellers. Before you get up to the fur registering area- have your fur grouped how you would like them lotted (best way is to use a shower curtain metal hook clasp thingy or tie some rope around the eye holes of each lot). We will come up and ask to see your bobcat lots and ask you to relot it (we will even help if you grade it and relot it if want it) or give you the thumbs up and move on down the line. We are doing this so the sale runs quickly and efficiently. Recently speaking with a fur buyer he mentioned he would rather see a QUALITY 37" bobcat handled well, then a 42" average bobcat handled hap-hazardly. Just because you have a big cat doesn't mean it's worth big bucks. That's tough to get through people's head. Also remember, we can't compete with other sales in quantity. We don't have the space! If we took all grades and species of pelts this sale, we would be dealing with piles of fur 10' high in the small building we have rented. Keep the questions or concerns coming.

People need to remember with the Kingman Sale the new policy we are starting this year and will be sticking to 100%. Bobcats under 32" will not be permitted to be registered into a lot and on put on a table. Sell them to a buyer in the parking lot. Sow bellied females or flat back early season bobcats will also not be in this sale. Regardless how you groan, threaten, stamp your feet, or even weep, if your bobcat doesn't meet the new requirements you need to conduct a sale outside and your fur will not be registered. We do this to #1 provide a location in AZ where the TOP bobcats are consistently sold and #2 we only have 1 building to house pre-sale, sale, and post-sale fur are are strapped for floor space. This is a non-profit fur sale so we really don't lose nor make any money nor care if people sell thier fur outside, before or after the sale. We are just providing the location where the trapper/predator caller and the buyer can make a deal. If you are not happy with the specifics of the sale, NAFA is your last chance. Remember- 1. There will be no one from Arizona Game and Fish selling CITES tags. No tag on your bobcat means you can't sell it at the sale or in the parking lot by law. Kingman G&F office closes at 5 on Friday I believe. 2. Pelts can be registered Friday. Quicker in means quicker out. You get your check at the end by your lot number. If you are lot #5 then you are the 5th person to get your check and walk out the door and drive home. 3. Fur registration closes at 10 SHARP. 10:01 comes around and you will need to strike a deal in the parking lot. No biggy.

    Success With a New Toy

I had a Savage .17HMR I used for one season to see how it would do on fox and bobcats. It did not do what I wanted and I sold it. I was not happy with the make and model. The magazine/feed system on the savage was goofy. I had to push up on the magazine when cycling the bolt to get it to feed correctly. I used CCI's 17 grain TNT jacketed hollowpoints 1 entire season. The problem I had with the round was I'd shoot a fox and it wouldn't drop dead right there. It would run off 10-20 yards in the Manzanita bushes and die probably but problem was I couldn't find it. I shot a dozen coyotes with it (on fox stands), and would end up having to put a 2nd shot to kill them. I once had a coyote double come into about 20 yards and I shot them both, not before watching them jump and spin for 30 seconds as I fought to chamber another round and shoot again. I did shoot 1 nice bobcat with it. Called cat into 30 yards and I drilled it right in the middle of the chest. Cat flopped down and didn't twitch. No exit and almost no entry. I decided the bullet does not travel fast enough, even with shooting the smallest bullet I could find. 17 g @ 2500 fps. I sold the gun after the season ended. Since you mentioned problems with finding ammunition I checked in the safe and still have 3-4 unopened boxes and one box of 21 if you are interested. CCI's 17 grain TNT jacketed hollowpoints. I paid $19.95 a box back 3-4 years ago. Let me know and we'll work out a deal. Here are some .17 hmr kill shots and the gun just before I sold it.

I have been lured into a battle of wits with the jester of the predator hunting community. You guys over here have a lot of patience.

    Strecher? Flesher? FUR WHISPERER

I was huntng with Les Johnson once up near Congress a number of years ago. A bobcat crossed in front of us on the dirt road we were driving down. We stopped the truck and watched it through our scopes as it wandered up a hill and over a saddle. Nobody even considered shooting it. It wasn't even discussed.

    Strecher? Flesher? FUR WHISPERER

$125 an hour and I'll teach you how to predator call so you call one in on your own and shoot it instead of use dogs or as we saw most recently, pull your truck over and shoot one you saw sitting on a log while you drove down the road. I figure you're gonna need to pay me for a few hours of work at least because I can only imagine being cooped up with you in a truck listening to you gab on and on is going to take up a fair amount of time. You don't seen very teachable but I'll give it my best shot. Shoot me an email if you are interested and I'll put it on the calendar.

Get it to me and I'll skin it and teach you how to do everything along the way. $75 and 45 minutes later its on a stretcher ready to dry. 1 week later you can pick it up finished and ready for sale. I know there are a few guys in Tucson who would do it.

This forum is full of pictures of bear and lon taken with an e-caller. I have called in multiple lions with an e-caller. Pictures are out there. Foxpro Minaska Outdoors Wildlife Technologies These are the heavy hitters in the electronic calling companies. Generally the better quality caller, with longer battery life, programmable sounds, and extreemly loud are going to run $400 +.

  21. This information was just released on PHF. I re-posted it here for everyone. It's on his site's front page if you want to read it yourself. Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale News Release 2/17/2014 With the Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale less than three weeks away, we felt it important to give Bobcat Trappers an update on the details of the upcoming sale. Keeping in mind the results of the recent Fur Sales, we are wanting to clarify and inform the public to some continuing practices and new policies for the upcoming sale so that it is successful for both the sellers and the buyers. 1. At the Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale, buyers are not interested in purchasing bobcat pelts that are short in length (less than 32"), poorly handled, sow-bellied females, or flat fur bobcats. We want only quality pelts brought through the door. Buyers travel from all across the country to purchase fur in Kingman, Arizona and we want them to feel their time is well spent. Last year we had many sub-par bobcats put on the tables. This year we will raise the average quality of our bobcats. 2. Our goal is to get the sellers and buyers in and out of our sale as quickly as possible. To do this we are asking sellers to be considerate of people's time and not put single bobcat pelts in their own lots unless the bobcat is of a different quality compared to the other pelts on your ticket. An example would be if you have 3 pelts that are all similar in size and fur quality being placed in the same lot rather than making three separate lots. Buyers are more interested in bidding on five or more Bobcat Pelts in one lot at once than one in a single lot. Do not feel you have to spread your pelts out and take up all five lots you are allotted. Please help us with this or we will step in and request it of you. We are doing this so the sale moves at a quick pace. This, in turn, will help fur prices stay on the edge we all want. 3. We will be registering fur starting Friday, March 7th at 9 AM. We will stay in the building accepting fur until midnight Friday, if we need be. We will continue again the following day, Saturday at 7 AM and stop accepting fur at 10 AM. We do this so that it gives the fur buyers enough time to grade the fur so we can start promptly at 12 noon on Saturday. Be advised- We will turn your Bobcat Pelts away if they come in the door later than 10 AM Saturday, March 8th. No exceptions. The Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale does not make a profit from this sale so accepting all fur, regardless of when it arrives, is not something we will do. 4. We added a 1% commission on all fur sold in response to Arizona Trappers asking that the Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale contribute monetarily to Arizona Trappers. Most of the 1% collected this year will go directly to the Southwest Fur Harvesters Youth Program. Youth are the future of trapping and we feel at this point that this is where most the funds are best spent. The rest of the Commission collected will go to preserve trapping in the Western States. We will always be very transparent in where these funds are go each year. 5. Sellers will walk out the door at the end of the sale with a check(s) in their hands. The 1% commission will be deducted at the time the check(s) is written. 6. As of today we have 5 fur buyers that have committed to attending the sale. If you are a fur buyer and want to purchase fur at this sale please contact Dennis Kubesh at 231-228-6667. 7. As is the policy at fur sales across the United States, once your fur has been registered at the sale, it will remain on the tables until your lot number is auctioned off. You always have the right to choose to No Sale your fur with us and there is never a no sale fee at the Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale. If you want to sell your fur to a buyer before or after the sale in the parking lot, that is your business. If you have fur from other species you want to sell, feel free to strike a bargain in the parking lot with a buyer. We only request that quality bobcat pelts are sold inside the building at the Briarpatch Bobcat Fur Sale. 8. To enter the sale building you need to pay a $20 entrance fee (to cover the cost of the building and insurance) and have at least 1 pelt to sell. This is not a sale geared toward spectators. On a final note, we are trying to do everything possible to make this sale a success for everyone who attends. We put on this sale for the sole purpose of getting the trapper the most money possible for his/her fur. We now add to that, our mission to help youth trapping in Arizona, and trapping in Western States. We wish everyone good luck selling your fur wherever you choose to sell it this year and hope everyone feels satisfied with the season's outcome. Thanks for your Support! -Bob Small

    Globe Fur sale

I caught 14 bobcats in 10 days in that area. That includes letting 2 smaller bobcats go. People are lucky I didn't blur out everything but my truck and the cats! 2 days where I caught doubles in 1 day and 1 day where I caught a triple. I have never in my life caught numbers like that and left the area after 10 days even though I even caught a cat the day I pulled all the cages. If he is looking for pictures on the internet to hammer me on there are better ones than that. Keep trying. As entertainment so we just don't have top read this pissing match crap, here is a picture of a bobcat some knucklehead had mounted with an eating disorder. The rock its mounted on looks like a meteorite or something. Ha.
