RHINO replied to hawkeye's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Why do you think our numbers are declining? Maybe it is because our wildlife management is horrible, and the quality of our hunting keeps going down. I love to hunt just as much as any of you, but if I was in a position to relocate I would. I am sick of waiting a decade or more for a decent tag. I have been applying for 17 years, and in that time I have had 0 antelope tags, 2 bull tags, and 6 deer tags. The only decent tag I could count on was my december 24a tag, but now they have taken that away too. I was able to get that tag every 3 or 4 years, and it was usually a great hunt. This last year I had the november hunt. I have never glassed so hard and seen so few deer but so many people. The idea of more tags in place of quality hunting or the wildlife itself is not a good one. Everyone is so afraid of change, even when they don't like the current situation that they are in. -
All those bucks were killed this year in central arizona, except my big two point from last year was killed in december.

We have played with the lost river bullet, xlc, xbt, accubond, and interbonds. We were abe to get more speed and better accuracy out of the 139 grain interbonds. It is also the lowest priced.

As for having one in the chamber I personaly don't. But I do put one in when I come over a ridge, sadle, or when you just have that feeling that one is going to jump out of that manzinita in front of you. As for shootin past 400 yards, I have done it several times. I shot a 90 incher at 486 yards. He was walking up the ridge and about to get away. He didn't know I was there and probably could have let him walk over the ridge and bed down. then sneek up and try to jump him up and get a shot when he is at a dead run through the brush. Sorry, I think it was a smarter shot a 486. I try to get as close as possable were I don't spook them. I too a 90 inch 2 point last year. I spotted him from over a mile away. But I was able to get a 200 yard shot. Sometimes you can get up close and sometimes you can't with the lay of the land. I personally shoot a 30-06 with a mill dot scope and am very comfortable taking a shot up to 500 yards. My brother shoots a 7mm ultra mag and he is comfortable out even further. He took a nice buck last year at 650 yards, and there was no way he was getting any closer. After he shot, it took him a couple of hours to get over to the deer. If you shoot alot a 400 yard shot is an easy shot, if the conditions are right.

I e-mailed some pics of my deer to amanda. I shot it on opening day. I wanted a 100"+ buck but this deer was just too good too pass up. I thought about it for a long time before I decided it would be stupid to pass him up. He scores 88 6/8 as a 2 point. He has a lot of mass and his g2's are just over 7 inches.

How did you know that. I'll try to dig up some pics and post them for you guys.

Thats him. Thank you for posting him Amanda. I seem to have a hard time posting these pics. Here is the story. Opening morning we hikied in right at day light to a big basin that we know that holds a lot of deer. By we I mean my dad, brother, and friend. Special thanks to my friend for bringing me into his little honey hole. We glassed for deer for about an hour without seeing anything. So we decided to climb on this other ridge so we could see a bigger portion of the basin. Sure enough it wasn't long before we had deer. This buck was with four does and a unicorn. They were about 3/4 of a mile away. I watched him in the spotting scope for a while when I decided to let him go. We glassed up some more deer. Another buck but way too small. About twenty minutes went buy before I had to take another look. The sun was now hitting the ridges. My buddy told me he as another point on his left side. I looked through the spotting scope and sure enough, he grew an inch. Thats all it took, I told him lets go give it a try. We snuck down a wash then climed a ridge that would give us a pretty good shot. Once we got there all the deer were in the wash bedded down. What had happed, another buck came up and pushed them down into the bottom. We were alot closer than we thought. From were we first saw them we figured this ridge would give me a good 400 yard shot, we were wrong we were only 200 yards. It wasn't long before one of the does spooked. they all went up the ridge exept the big buck and one doe. We waited what seemed like an eternity but was only about 15 minutes until the big boy came out of the bottom and gave me a shot. Then the work began. We had to pack him about 1.5 to 2 miles. My dad and brother went back to see if they could get the trucks closer and me and Jay started packing. Jay picked the deer up and threw him over his back and caried him for about a mile before he put him down. This man is an animal. Thanks I hope you enjoy.
