HELP: Want to put turrets on my scope...

Good info to think about... still want the turrets on there because I have shot with both, and I am much more confident being able to dial in a distance than make and educated guess about how high I need to aim at a given distance. I don't plan on shooting over 400 yards at anything... again, good info. I'll give you an update on how this goes once I get around to doing it... Dale
  2. Upgrading to Manfrotto this year. I bought this last year and it is a good tripod, but my brother-in-law is selling me his Manfrotto setup so I no longer need this. I originally paid $95 for it, would love to get $75 obo. I have a new adapter/plate that I purchased at Sportsman's before I thought I was going to be selling it. Never been opened and paid $30 for it. If you want that, I'll take $25. I don't have any plates for this tripod, the one I did have I broke the screw on it because I was talking and twisted it the wrong way a little too long... I asked at Sportsmans if they just sold plates, but they weren't sure, hence the purchase of the adapter/plate combo. The tripod also comes with a case, although it isn't shown... Specs: 18" folded, just under 5'6" fully extended (a little short for me at 6' if standing, but not horrible), weighs about 1.5lbs, I live in Gilbert and work in Scottsdale, so can arrange a meeting. If you would like me to ship it, I'll figure out the cost and you can just pay that.

    Got him...

Picture or not... the rest of the Al Qaeda leaders are deciding that getting shot in the face isn't how they want to meet their 70 virgins... It's easy for those at the top to tell the foot soldiers to give up their lives, but it looks like they are cracking with the pressure/worry of getting shot in the face. GOOD! http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theenvoy/20110504/ts_yblog_theenvoy/al-qaeda-member-surrenders-saudi-arabia-says

    Got him...

I don't think it will... According to reports they probably tied him down (mob style) to something heavy to make sure he went straight to the bottom...

    Got him...

+1 I been thinking bout this all day. I guess im just a bit skeptical with our govt these days especially after the whole Pat Tillman cover up. Not sure what this has to do with the Pat T. cover-up. That was a poor decision that was made by leaders on the ground in Afghanistan, not the Administration. Has nothing to do with this. Conspiracy theories will always be there. I find it inconceivable that would be the case here...... IMO So what if they originally said twice in the left side of the head, but then quickly buried him at sea? What would that have to do with it being the right guy or not? It was a covert operation, and so it would be expected that there are varying stories and speculation regarding exactly how it went down. Let it rest guys, and celebrate the fact that justice has been done. Good job to our leaders and the forces that got this job done! S. I agree with this... Had it been a cover-up he would no doubt have a video out by now letting his followers know he was still alive. Plus, the reaction from other terrorist leaders makes it sound like they are sure he is dead. I'm glad the guy is gone. I wish it ended the war, but unfortunately when you cut off the snake's head, the body keeps moving. There is still a lot of work left in the war on terror, and if reports are true, bin Laden set it up so that everyone could operate independently once he was gone. I hope the replcement leaders that pop up are easier to find. IMO, we need to sit Pakistan down and find out how the heck they missed this (if the did actually miss it) or why they are protecting these guys in the first place.

    Got him...

I read on ABCnews that they put him the ocean so they didn't create a site for terrorists to flock to and worship (although that seems like an easy way to get them to gather for a few more takeouts). Also read that no country wanted his body, so they had to dump it somewhere... Best part of what I read though was that no SEAL was hurt during the operation and he was shot in the head and then shot again just to make sure. I can't tell you how happy I am he was killed by a US Soldier rather than being taken out by a "natural" cause. I think if we woke up one morning and read he had died of a disease, we all would have been pretty pissed that no American got to line him up in front of their sights. My hats off to the SEALS and all those that have worked tirelessly in the fight against terrorism for the past decade. I know his death isn't the end of it, but it is a great milestone and something positive that they all deserve!

    WTB Springfield XD 9mm

I am looking to buy a Springfield XD 9MM Compact. I would prefer all black, but I know they make them in two-tones so may consider that also. I don't have a set price I am willing to spend because it will depend on condition of gun and accessories with it. Would like to get the original case they come in if you still have it... If you have one that you want to get rid of (or know someone that does) or know a gun store near you that has one, let me know. I don't have anything great to trade, so just cash is what you get I might consider other calibers, so if you have something else, run it by me. I really want it to be the Springfield XD model type though because of all the safety/notification features they have... Basically, just run what you have by me and what you want for it. The worst I can say is NO!

    WTB Springfield XD 9mm

Greg, I am really looking for a compact, not a sub compact. I'll keep yours in mind though in case I can't find what I want at a good price. Bonecollector, are you about to fall out of love with it enough to sell it?

    2010 Coues Hunt

Sweet buck... but I think the best part of the story is that you call your dad "dude" at least 10 times
  12. As you can tell by the name, I am new to hunting. I put in for the first time in my life last year and shot a high 80s buck from 405 yards. Really, it was the perfect scenario for me. My bro-in-law is a big time hunter and he basically did all of the work for me. He glassed for me (I didn’t shoot any that he glassed, although we almost got a chance), let me use his pack, his 300 RUM, his binos, his everything… He basically gave me the easy way to start a hunting career, and now I am hooked on it. This year, he has a trophy hunt for both Elk and Coues, so naturally he is spending all of his time working on that. I can’t blame him, and I am actually excited to do it on my own. I have already spent time glassing and will spend more time. I have purchased a rifle (.270 Weatherby) and have just about everything I need (equipment-wise) for a successful hunt. I am going with a friend that has never hunted before, so neither of us are big on experience. Here are some of my questions, just looking for general opinions… I am confident with my rifle out to 300 yds or so. I would like to get as close as possible to tell you the truth, if I find a buck to shoot. What do you all think of camo? My pack is Advantage Max-1, which I like. Not so much looking for a pattern, just wondering if it is needed or not for a rifle hunt. My hunt is early Nov, Unit 31 (high desert mountain area for those that aren't familiar).

    Camo on a rifle hunt?

Quick add-on question... What cover scents do all of you use/prefer?

    Camo on a rifle hunt?

Thanks for the tips so far... My rifle is black synthetic stock with a blued barrel, so should be fine on that. Last year I shot the dear in green pants and a grey shirt. I'm hunting in 31, and I know the area decent (the guy I am hunting with grew up there) so if we get lost we should be able to get back to Thatcher/Safford within a day Here is the dear from last year. Shot him on the 2nd morning of the hunt. Quick story... On the first morning of the hunt we were in an area where my bro-in-law had glassed a nic 3x3 from about a mile away. He couldn't tell exactly how big it was, but definitely a shooter. We got there early, maybe 5:30, and hiked over a few hills. We glassed for a little bit and kind ofjust waited around to see something in a valley below us where the shade was. We spotted a few does, but no bucks. We walked to the next hill and almost to the top of the area and we both spotted 4 deer running back over the hill we had just come from, but they hadn't seen us because they weren't flagging. We quietly moved to an area where we could glass them from and it turned out to be 3 does and a spike. Don't get me wrong, first hunt I would have taken a spike if I had no other options, but we both knew there was another option. We waited a little longer and didn't see anything else. We packed up the rifle and started to head out (by this time it was 10:30 or so) because my bro-in-law had to work that afternoon. Just as we had packed up we turn to look at the area we had just come from, and not more than 50 yds from where we had started the chase of the 4 deer was that 3x3 staring straight at us. Neither of us moved... my bro-in-law just whispered for me to get the rifle back out, which I did slowly. As soon as I had it out of the bag to get set up, he took off over the other side of the hill. We missed our chance! I didn't think I would get another chance at a decent buck (that one we saw was in the 95-105 range according to my bro-in-law) for the rest of the hunt. You guys know the rest of the story, he hooked me up the next morning by glassing up the buck I shot from about 900 yards and we crept in to 405 when I took him. Hooked for life (no longer living with a happy wife ) Here is a picture (only decent one I have with me at work), if it works, he is also hanging out of the bag in my pic on the left.

    Pan Head vs Ball Head

I am going to buy the Slik Srint Pro II tripod. You won't be able to talk me out of that tripod for the price. I have heard too many good things about it and I'm not willing to spend an extra few hundred to get something only a little bit better. My questions is this. Should I get a pan head or a ball head? I have been leaning towards a pan head based on a short conversation I had with the guys at Sportsman's, but looking for other opinions. What do you use? Why? What type of binos do you have? What is the benefit of each? Have you used both and like one over the other? Basically any and all info you can give me is appreciated... It is between these... http://www.amazon.com/Slik-Tripod-Sprint-3...4737&sr=8-2 Pan Head and http://www.amazon.com/Slik-Sprint-Tripod-M...U/ref=pd_cp_e_0 Ball Head The binos I will be putting on it are Fujinon 15x60s. The tripod will hold them, they are about the same weight as Swaro 15x56s. Thanks!

    Pan Head vs Ball Head

So... you guys are saying I should go with the pan head... I ordered it this morning and it came with the head. I'll probably use that this year and then upgrade to the Manfrotto 700rc2 next year. Thanks for all the opinions! Dale

    Rangefinder and GPS

Let me know what you have. I'm not looking for top of the line stuff. Just something decent. I really like the Garmin Etrex Legend HCX if anyone has that, but would consider other models. As far as a rangefinder, I don't really care. As long as it is somewhat accurate out to 500 yds or so it should be good enough. The rangefinder is definitely second on my list. I can live without that, but would really like to get a decent GPS that will hold topo maps. PM with what you have and I will let you know if I am interested. Would like to stay in the $300 range (total) for both of them... Dale

    Play for Payten Golf-a-thon

Hi Everyone, Based on the enormous response on coueswhitetail.com for other events and fundraisers, I knew this would be a great place to turn for this great cause. After talking with Amanda, she advised me to post it here. A family I know has a daughter, Payten, who has had medical trials since birth. She is now 20-months old and has undergone multiple surgeries, tests, and complications with no definite reason for her trials. Due to her medical difficulties, her family could use financial help. They have put together a charity 36-hole golf-a-thon on July 12 at Ocotillo Golf Course to raise money for her charity, Payten's Prayers. This will be a great event and helping a wonderful family. The family lives in Apache Junction. They have 3 kids (Payten is the youngest). She has an older brother and sister. So far the surgeries are either exploratory or a quick fix (such as the heart surgery for her enlarged heart). Right now there are no surgeries planned, but that could literally change any day. They really have no idea what is causing all of her issues or if they even know about all of them as a new one seems to pop up every now and then. The parents have literally gone from no medical knowledge to being trained on how to put in a tracheotomy tube, a breathing tube, a feeding tube, etc… It is literally a 24/7 second job to make sure everything is always running the way it is supposed to for her. A full night’s sleep is nonexistent for them (every 2 hours something needs to be replaced or cleaned) but you would rarely, if ever, hear them complain about it. I have attached a flyer that explains Play for Payten Golf-a-thon and how you can help. You can also read her story at her website http://payten.homestead.com/baby.html. If you would like to play, you can find out how to register on her website and the attached flyer. If you would like to contribute but would rather not golf, you can pledge a per hole donation towards my golf game. Just $1/hole will contribute $36 to her charity. Please click on the following link to pledge towards my game: https://integritygolfsolutions.com?pid=dale...e@nbarizona.com Thank you for your help, it truly is appreciated. If you have colleagues, friends, church acquaintances or anyone else that may be interested in helping, please forward this information. Again, you are more than welcome to play in the event (and then you too can have funds pledged towards your game) or you can simply donate any amount to my game (many people are donating $1/hole, some more, some less and even some are donating a flat amount of $20, $30, really anything helps!). If you have any questions, please send me a PM or respond here and I'll be checking regularly. Dale Play_for_Payten.pdf

    Is this a good deal?

Let me start off by saying that I know that Swaros/Leicas are superior to the binos I am looking at. I know because I have looked through Swaros and I loved them, however I didn't love them enough to spend $2,000 on just the glass... I am new to hunting and looking to get some decent gear at a decent price. I don't go out and glass on a regular basis, I wouldn't be considered an "avid-hunter", yet... I just got into it last year and have purchased a rifle/scope, pack, and now looking at binos. I would like to get a decent pair at a good price and if I can get an adapter and tripod and a good set of binos for $600 or so, I am a happy person. I know that a lot of people will tell me to save for the more expensive ones because I'll regret it later, but I am fine with regretting this purchase later. I would like some binos to get me through the next few years until I feel like I can justify a $2,000 purchase to myself. All that being said, does anyone have any experience with Nikon Monarch ATB 12x56? I can't see a deer for the life of me in anything under a 56 (used my brother-in-law's swaro 10x42s and saw nothing, but when he let me use the 56s I could see the deer) so that size is a must for me. These look like a good deal, but I am going between this set and the Minox open box 15X58s that another user posted (cameraland). Any opinion you guys can give is appreciated. I will eventually spring for the expensive glass, but I don't hunt enough, nor am I good enough on my own yet, to even consider purchasing them for a ways down the road... http://www.hayneedleshopping.com/general/1...e=22-65355423-2
