Other than the actual breeding activity, does doe behavior change during the rut? Do the does still stay together, keeping the same bedding and feeding activity, only now with an occasional buck tagging along, waiting for a doe to be ready? What about the spikes that are still running with the does? Do the bucks run them off from the does during the rut? Thanks, Bowsniper

More wilderness means more and better wildlife habitat. As hunters, wildlife habitiat should be our number one concern. The road hunters may squeal about this, but I think it's a good thing. Bowsniper

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm going to put up a treestand for the archery hunt in a doe traffic area, and hope that a buck follows them in sometime. Bowsniper

Well lets see.......I'm not in the sierra club, I like killing animals, so I guess that PETA wouldn't take me, so I guess that makes me a tree hugging SOB. OK, I can live with that. Hey Arizona Griz, which one are you? Bowsniper

Bears and Trail Cams
bowsniper replied to standman's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
The AZ G&F regs say, "No person shall knowingly use any substance as bait at any time to attract or take a bear." So to me that means you can't bait them even when you are not hunting them. Any other opinions? Bowsniper -
Bears and Trail Cams
bowsniper replied to standman's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
coues7, could you either post or also send me the email about bears and cams? I've run ito this problem also. Thanks, Bowsniper -
I with you , Griz! Bring on the wolves! (and the Griz!) True, a few more coues may go to the wolves instead of hunters, but native animal population and biodiversity is important for a healthy habitat, as is the lack of exotic animal population (cows). We hunters need to be concerned for the long term health of the coues habitat, not just the number of coues tags we'll get next year. Our number one concern should be for the health of the habitiat, becuase without the habitat, we won't be hunting. OK, bring on the flames! Bowsniper

Game Camera Tips
bowsniper replied to Traveler's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Bill, If you have lots of time and like to tinker, then build your own game cam. Here's a link to get you started: http://www.jesseshuntingpage.com/site/homebrew-cams.html Otherwise, you just can't beat the $59 stealthcam at walmart! Bowsniper -
I'm going try to call in a bear for the first time this weekend in a unit where I've seen a lot of sign and the season is still open. I'll be using a Johnny Stewart tape. My question is which would be more effective: a cub in distress or a jack rabbit in distress? Thanks
-
The ranchers are really pushing this. That's why they closed down unit 10 this Fall, a power play to push this agenda. This would turn Arizona hunting into a rich boy's sport. We have to band together and tell game and fish that we're not going to put up with this crap! Bowsniper

Hey Tam, How do you use the trail cameras for bear? Do you set them up in any place in particuliar? Thanks, Bowsniper

My one and only kill was a carp at 565 yards with a 300 win mag. I was more happy with the shot than the deer. Those guys giving you a hard time probably never shot their rifles past 100 yards for anything, including the target range. bowsniper

I couldn't even squeeze out a lousy archery pig tag. Oh well, that gives me more time to hunt coues. Bowsniper

No bears came in, but it was fun to try. I'm definitely going to learn more about bears before next season. Thanks for all the responses. Mark

Couesi1, You have kind of hit a sore spot on the forum. There are a lot of newbies that post the same question as yours, and then disappear. The guys on the forum are understandably reluctant to share prized "where to hunt" information with transient members. An exception to this would probably be youth hunters. My advice to you is take a lot of time to read ALL the archives. There probably won't be any hot spots about 23 posted, but there is an incredible wealth of information about how to hunt coues. Then you could post more specific questions about HOW to hunt coues, and you'll get lots of responses and help. Also, try game and fish web page. www.azgfd.com , they give suggestions of where to hunt in each unit. Good luck, Bowsniper

treestandman1 and TAM, thanks for your replies. I'm headed up to 24A for the third weekend in a row to to scout, and the wife is getting a little "testy". Bowsniper

Has anyone tried this stuff? How did it work? Here's a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT Thanks

I don't have anything against salt or cocaine, I was just checking to see what else was available or other possibilities to try. There are a lot of advertised products, and I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing the boat on something. It wouldn't be the first time! BTW, please set me straight on what a "mock scrape" is. Thanks, Bowsniper

OK, so much for that stuff. Well then, what could be some good attractants besides deer cocaine and salt? I'm using a bow on Mr. Coues, so I can't reach out and touch at 300 yards like you rifle guys. Thanks

NEW RIFLE PURCHASE FOR NOV HUNT ADVIDE
bowsniper replied to gnoto's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
A 300 win mag will really reach out. I killed my first carp (and only) in 32 at 565 yards. Whatever you get, you better hurry! Mark -
Good choices! How come you get your bow now and you boy has to wait until Christmas? I just got my son his micro midas last week and I can't pry him loose of it. Have fun! Mark

Coues densities in 24A, then and now
bowsniper replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Maybe we ought to arrange a little rendezvous there for dinner during the December hunt. Or just stop by, I'll be eating there every day I'm hunting. -
Hey guys, I have been studying the coues distribution/density map on Amanda's site (great website, Amanda!). Do you think that the high density areas indicated on the 1990 map of the coues distribution areas in 24A is still reasonably accurate? The reason that I'm questioning it is that the current G&F coues harvest objectives for 24A don't really indicate a high density population for that unit , so much as other units like 33, 32, or 34A. Those units are indicated on the map as high densities, and also currently have a large G&F harvest objective (400+). But 24A only has a harvest objective of around 100. What do you think? Thanks, Mark PS: I am new to the forum. I'm a fairly inexperienced bow hunter, with no coues kills, rifle of bow. I have spent the last few weeks reading almost all of the archives on the forum. Wow, what a great source of knowledge! I have learned more about coues in the last few weeks reading your old posts than I probably could ever learn on my own in a lifetime. Anyway, thank you all for educating me about Mr. Coues. I was also impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of everyone on the forum. I must have read a hundred "newbie, where to hunt?" posts in the archives, and every time you guys patiently direct the guy to the G&F website. Dimondbackaz, I must have seen your patient answer post "It is difficult to give you the advice on where to hunt since ........" over a hundred times! I spent 8 days of the August/September archery hunt sitting a tree stand in 6A and only saw a button and a couple of does. I'm sure that I did a lot of things wrong, but probably the worst was not being where the coues were. So for the rut hunt, I started studying the deer density map, converted that to a unit map, (not easy with only county lines) and compared it to the info on the G&F website and the G&F harvest objective numbers. I'm hoping this will get me to good densities. I'm not so worried about getting the monster since this would be my first coues, just density. From there I've been hitting the tire rubber and shoe leather. I was down in the Galiuro Mountains last weekend. Galiuro Mountain Man, I would love nothing more than to hunt down in your neck of the woods, but the place is 5 hours and $60 in gas away from me, and I decided that I just didn't have the time and money it would take to really get to know the area well. That's why I'm looking at 24A, it's a lot closer for me to get to every weekend. I should probably start archery deer hunting by chasing carp, but I just can't resist the coues! Thanks again for the great forum!

Coues densities in 24A, then and now

Hey Mike, would that be "El Rey", a shabby looking place on the North side of 60 about midway through town? Mark
