i was the other guy who fell out of a tree. i was leaning back on a "lineman" type tree harness when the harness failed. i fell about 20 feet onto my wrist and shattered it. i had surgery last week, and will need a few more. they will probably have to fuse my wrist. i was blessed that i had no other injuries. i tried to be very safe, using a full body harness and prusic lines. my down falll (literally) was that i didn't read the fine print on a poorly designed harness. if anyone has kevin's email address, please pm it to me. i'd like to email him. sitting out the season, contemplating a fused wrist , and typing with one hand really sucks. be careful. thank you amanda for taking me to the hospital. bowsniper

guys, thanks for your prayers and kind words. I just got back from my stand, a buddy took me up there to get my stuff. my fall was easily 25 feet. about 10 minutes before my fall, a little voice, the Lord, told me to move a log away from base of my tree. i fell right where the log had been. i shuttered when i saw the log today. i would have been impaled on a large broken branch that was sticking out of the log. please be safe out there. also if you see my buck in unit 23, please LEAVE HIM ALONE, HE'S MINE! bowsniper

I'd like to try to get my achery coues right in the window when the antler growth is complete, but before he starts to rub of the velvet. This is off the website: "For Coues deer, antler growth happens from June-September. During that time, the antlers are covered with "velvet". After the buck has completed antler growth, the velvet dries up and is rubbed off (antler polish). In Arizona, Coues deer typically polish their antlers from late September to mid-October." So if I'm reading this correctly, it looks my window would be early to mid September. Does anyone have any comments about what they have seen with growth and polishing around this time? Thanks, Bowsniper

The best hunter I know has spent almost 20 years trying to kill a coues spot stalk with an arrow. He finally killed one last January. You gotta be good and you gotta be lucky. I can't walk without sounding like a train, so I'll stick to my treestand. bowsniper

A few coues pics with a coues7 trail cam
bowsniper posted a topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
These were all taken with Scott's trail cam. The original photos were higher resolution, but I've converted to them to lower quality/size. Any one have a guess as to how big these guys will get? (these pictures were taken the first week of July) Thanks, Bowsniper -
Let's see... for $3000 I'll blindfold you and take you into my honeyhole! Seriously, how big of buck would make you happy? Bowsniper

Tree Tripod/ mounting device
bowsniper posted a topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I'd like to set my video cam up in the tree with me when I'm hunting from my tree stand. Does anyone know of a tripod or other device used to mount a video cam in a tree? I'd make one myself, but I just don't have the time. Thanks -
A few coues pics with a coues7 trail cam

I put the block there. I try not to start a permanent lick with pellets until I'm sure that I want to keep it there. Once you start a lick the leaches into the ground (with pellets), it will be there for a long time, giving those Coues different choices. If you use a block and then decide that you don't want to hunt there, just remove the block, and they have one less place to go, assuming that you block hasn?t melted too much. -

I have one of Scott's trail cams and will be getting at least two more. They are high quaility and work great! Bowsniper -
Official Dog Picture Thread

Worthless as hunting dog, but works well to scare the crap out out of people trying to sell you stuff at your door! -
Something I read somewhere else was saying that bucks weren't interested in salt during the rut, but from what you guys are saying that's not true. So you guys are seeing the bucks hit the salt during the rut? Bowsniper

Ditto on what galiuro mountain man said. I have two and once you get them tuned you can forget about them. Bowsniper

Unbelievable Bowhunting Accident
bowsniper replied to CHD's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
These were going around a few years ago. As I recall, Bubba and his brother LeRoy were out hunting when one shot the other by "accident" at close range. Bubba survived, and didn't even miss the grey matter that came out with the bone plug. Bowsniper -
Nice bird Scottyboy! Here's a photo of one I got in 6A last September with my bow while waiting for Mr. Coues to show up. The coues hunt turned into a turkey shoot! The coues never showed up. Bowsniper

I started using Rocky Mountain Snypers (mechanicals) because Randy Ulmer uses them. I figured that if they were good enough for him.... so far I haven't been disappointed, I've killed both things I've shot at, a coues and a turkey. On the coues, the blades expanded fully on the entrance, so the entrance wound had full open cuts. Also on the coues, I shot at him earlier in the day, but only hit him on the ear (I was all pumped up and missed) The arrow hit way out near the edge of the ear, but the blades still expanded and made full cuts through the thin ear, and that really impressed me. The turkey also had a full cut entrance wound. Bowsniper

Update on bowhunter4life (Mike)
bowsniper posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I just came back from the hospital. Mike's surgery went well. They were able to get out everything that needed to come out, and the Doctor said that it didn't appear to be cancerous, although we'll have to wait for the lab tests to know for sure. Mike will be in a lot of pain for the next few days. Thank you guys for your wonderful comments to Mike on the thread, I know that he really appreciated them. Bowsniper -
Update on bowhunter4life (Mike)
bowsniper replied to bowsniper's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Hey guys, I just went to see Mike at the hospital. The past few days have been very rough, but today he is much better, with less pain. He is Praising the Lord for his surgery and recovery. He asked me to pass along to you all a big "THANKS" for all of your prayers and support. He hopes to get out of the hospital Saturday or Sunday. Bowsniper -
Good Desert Camping
bowsniper replied to bowsniper's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Thanks for the suggestions guys. We're headed out on Saturday for Kofa for four days. It should be a good time Bowsniper -
I could use some suggestions on good places to take my family camping in the lower elevations. I know a lot of good places up North for Summer camping, but we want to go out next week for a few days to enjoy the green desert. I don't mind 2 or 3 hours out of Phoenix, and some 4wd is ok, although more than an hour of it the kids usually get car sick. I would prefer somewhere without a lot of people. Thanks a bunch for any suggestions! Bowsniper

I'm kind of anxious to get my game cameras out to get ready for the August hunt. When do the bucks start sprouting the new antlers? Bowsniper

Good Desert Camping

Thanks for the suggestions. Hey Coues Addict, how are the roads through Kofa? Can you get around pretty easy, dirt with some 4WD, or is it a lot of 4WD? Thanks! -
A Prayer for bowhunter4life (Mike)
bowsniper posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Guys, My good friend and your fellow coues hunter, bowhunter4life, (Mike) is having major surgery in a few days, on Tuesday, March 15. Mike's faith in Christ is awesome, and that faith is keeping him strong for this very difficult surgery. Maybe the worst thing about the whole thing for Mike is that the Doctors are telling him he won't be able to draw his bow for 10 to 12 months! Mike is determined to be drawing his bow in 2 or 3 months! (Go easy, Mike!) Anyway, I'd like to say a little prayer for Mike. If you are the praying kind, please include Mike and his family in your prayers. Feel free to post any encouraging words you have for Mike. If you aren't into prayers, sorry about that, go ahead and close up the thread. FATHER GOD, I LIFT UP MIKE, HIS WIFE KRISTEN, AND THEIR TWO SMALL CHILDREN TO YOU. FATHER, PLEASE COMFORT THEM DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME, AND GIVE THEM REASSURANCE THAT YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF ALL THINGS. PLEASE GUIDE THE SURGEON'S HANDS THROUGH A SUCCESSFUL SURGERY, AND BLESS MIKE WITH A SPEEDY RECOVERY. FATHER, I PRAISE YOU AND THANK YOU FOR MIKE'S AND KRISTEN'S AWESOME FAITH IN YOU, AND I ALSO THANK YOU FOR THE FRIENDSHIPS AND CAMARADERIE ON THIS FORUM. IN CHRIST'S NAME I PRAY, AMEN
