Trying something new this year. I will be smoking a turkey on the Traeger for Thanksgiving. Still new to smoking. The smart play would have been to do a trail run, but I've never been accused of being smart. Any tips from those of you who have done this before? Thanks in advance.

Good job on getting it done. Much better than movies!

We love it! I wanted a smoker, but realized that I needed it to be 'convenient' in order for us to use it. We don't use our gas grill anymore. We cook everything on the our Traeger. Burgers, steaks, ribs, pork shoulders, corn on the cob, veggies, fries, homemade pizza's, chicken, the list goes on...soon to add Thanksgiving Turkey! Super easy and great tasting food. At the time I thought perhaps we bought one that was too big, but I no longer feel that way. It wasn't cheap but we do not regret our decision.

Man, good tips guys! Looks like brining is a must and something I had planned anyways. Good to know I was on the right track. Bird weight is 12.5 lbs. Was thinking about putting it on 'smoke' for a three hours and then putting the temp to 350 to cook for 3-4hrs. 6A,you are correct with the pellets. We went with the lazy mans smoker and have loved it since we got it. There isn't much we don't cook on it and rarely use our oven anymore. I just haven't done the turkey yet...that will change in a couple days. oz31p, we will be using a deepfryer on the second bird but that one is not by responsibility.

Is this your first baby? After having complications on both our children directly after delivery (not expected on the first) I can tell you there is no way I would risk something like that. My wife did turkey hunt (6months along) and deer hunt (3months along) while pregnant, but 8.5 is a whole different ballgame. IMHO, I'd stay home and pray for a safe delivery and a healthy baby. I think too many folks take that for granted.

That's me. Fully expect a 5:1 ratio on shots to birds. I've only limited once back when it was 10 birds. In true form I took a girl I met off the internet with me 😳. She shot 2 boxes up and missed all of them. I shot 1 box, got 3 😂 How is naturegirl doing? 😝 Classic! Just spit my dinner out laughing! -
I think BOHNTR may know a thing or two about scoring animals....just maybe. Big deer no matter what the score.

Very nice!

Lots of things that can kill a deer besides hunters.

Prayers sent.

What are you going to use on that hunt Mike? You got a group of folks together to help out?

Congrats Marvin! I hope that you have the hunt you have dreamed of.

Perhaps he has a bear tag....

This may be a dumb question, so please forgive me. I have a climbing tree stand I bought off a member a few years ago. I have yet to use it. My question is, can it be used like a regular hang-on stand? The tree I'm looking at using has tons of branches that I am not willing to cut. Can I climb the tree, pull up the stand, and assmble up in the tree? Maybe some of you have tried this and can give some feedback. Good or bad or dumb idea? Thanks!

The only real 'gamely' deer I had was an archery muley in Jan. But I think the meat was tough and gamey more due to the distance and time covered after the shot (he traveled a fair distance) to expiration. Maybe...
