    I found the Hybrids again...

Well I can tell you this much when I do spook them the Hybrids never flag like a whitetail does as it runs away. I found that interesting, I guess they haven't been taught to use their big tail like a coues does!

    I found the Hybrids again...

Well the coues buck was with the group a few weeks ago and the big muley doe has had a fawn the last 2 years, lets hope she has a buck this summer! Pixman
  4. I think this is the same buck. Look closely at the rear-end, notice the slant on the top part of the tail in both pics. The first 2 pics are from March 2010 and the last 2 are from January 2011.If it is him he gained a 6 inch spread or so! Let me know what you guys think.

    My best day...

Well I woke up early and headed for my favorite deer spot hoping to see some rutting muleys. Right away I found a 3x2 muley chasing doe's and chased off a spike a couple of times. I was enjoying the show but I wanted to see a bigger buck so I moved to another spot. After glassing for a couple of minutes I found some mule deer but they were pretty far away. Then I see a coues tail flagging and it is a coues buck rutting among the muley doe's. Then I see a muley buck amongst all this and then I see the coues buck chase off the bigger muley buck. I can't believe my eyes and it is just too far to get any pics so I make a plan on how to get over to the group of rutting deer. After a short drive and a 20-30 minute walk I am slowly walking over a ridge and I stop and look around and I see a muley doe walking right to me followed by a couple more muley doe's. Well I waited for a while hoping one or both of the bucks would show up but no such luck so I decided to walk over to the next ridge knowing I would be busted by the group of muley doe's that were just below me maybe 60 yards or so. As I started to walk sure enough they were all looking up at me and then I am seeing more then just 3 doe's and I see a hybrid that I have been looking for since last winter and she looks really healthy and there is a new fawn hybrid with the group as well. I am excited to see the hybrid again and now there is a fawn hybrid from this past summer as well. So I realize that the coues buck I ws seeing rutting with the doe's is probably the father to these hybrids. Well they move off over the ridge and I look around for a minute and see the muley buck take off running and I snap a few pics as he goes over the ridge!Well I walk over to the next ridge and sneak over the top and I see a group of deer and I snap some pics quickly. I see the muley buck on the right and then I see a coues flagging and pushing the muley does over the next ridge and I realize it is the buck and he rounded up the doe's and the muley just backed off and let the coues buck take the doe's with him. Well the muley buck was scared or shocked but he stood there for over 5 minutes just looking at me and looking around. I was probably 60-70 yards away and he never ran away. After 5 minutes or so a muley doe came back over the ridge to investigate me and she lead the muley buck away. It was an awesome morning and hard to beleive what I had just seen. I am glad my camera battery held on it was saying low battery many times and I would turn it off and wait a few minutes and take a few pics and turn it back off Thanks for reading and I hope the story made since but if not enjoy the pics, lol Happy New Year! Find the coues buck!

I wasn't out there today. Are you saying you know where it was from looking at the pic?
  10. I was helping a buddy scout for deer and check our cams and found the right antler a couple of weeks ago and yesterday coming back from a glassing point I found the left side. They were well over 2 miles apart maybe closer to 3 but they look very similar so I don't know if they are a matching set or not. What do you think? A couple of hour later my buddy found a shed in a different place that was almost twice as big. Roughly scored if the other side matched at 116-118, regardless it is a nice shed!

Oct 2011 Hunt - My First Writeup

Thanks for sharing your story. You know I was interested in hearing about it and I was even mentioned in it kind of, lol. As you know I helped a buddy up there and it was a tough hunt. He only saw 2 bucks, one was a big buck that he didn't get a shot at and the other he killed and it was a small 2 point. He didn't want tag soup so he setteled for the small 2 point on the last day.

0 for 4 but we had a great time!

Thanks for sharing your trip with us, looks like you had alot of fun even though you didn't come home with a buck. I enjoy seeing an assortment of wildlife while I am out looking for a particular animal!

2 sheds, in 2 weeks over 2 miles apart!

Ok I was going through my pics and found the buck that shed the right side of these antlers. He was still packing it in March and I found it in October. His left side is definetly not the one that I found 2 weeks later so they are not a match! They look like they could be but now I know for sure. I thought they were pretty far apart to be a match but you never know!

2 sheds, in 2 weeks over 2 miles apart!

When I found the first shed it was out in the open, The second was more on the north slope and near some bushes so it didn't get as much sun so it isn't as white!

    Has anyone ever seen this?

So a buddy and myself went out Saturday morning to scout for his upcoming coues hunt. We saw a group of mule deer with 4-5 bucks and saw a few small fights between them but we also saw them sniffing the backside of the biggest buck. It was almost like a buck would do to a doe during the rut or bull to a cow. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before, I dont recall seeing anything like this before!

2011 Elk Season In Review (video)

I enjoyed it, thanks for putting it together and sharing with us. You did a good job of keeping it up beat and moving so it was fun to watch!
  17. Well I posted a story a month ago or so of a bull I have seen over the last 4 years that has a raspy bugle hence the name Raspy. A few weeks ago my wife and I went to my elk spot where Raspy hangs out. We heard some bugels but we didn't hear or see Raspy. On our way out we see a bunch of vultures and crows fly away so I knew something was dead. We walk over and find the remains of a bull that had been killed recently, probably the day before. I thought it might be Raspy and was a little sad thinking I wont hear his distint bugle or see his amazing 5x5 rack anymore. Well I got up early this morning and thought I would see if the bulls are still bugling and maybe see if I could hear or find Raspy. I parked the car a half hour before there was enough light to see and listened for some bugels. The first one I hear is Raspy and he is close by. I could hardly wait for the sun to come up so I could see him and get some pics of him. Luckily I was able to get some pics and hear his awesome bugle! He survived another year as long as he survives the late hunt! Maybe I will see my old friend next year if I am so lucky!
  18. My wife and I were chasing elk and found a trailcam just off a water hole in unit 22. I waved hello as we walked in front of it. Just wondering if it's anyone on here!

    Raspy the bull elk!

Well back in September of 2008 I was checking out a new area during the Elk rut. I drove to my spot and listened for bugels just as I was able to see in the early morning light. I heard a few bugels and then one that really got my attention. It sounded mature and raspy like a big bull so I decided to check this bull out. I snuck in and caught a glimpse of him and chased him for about an hour until I got a good look and some pics of him. He was an ok bull with real big 4th's. So I named him Raspy because of his distinct and unique bugle. Well I have seen Raspy every year since then and was able to find him again on Friday morning. I got to my spot and listened and he was very close so I knew I had a shot at some pics and video. He is very good at moving just as the sun starts to lighten the sky and he moves into the trees so he is very hard to get pics of and he will not come into my cow calls, he never has. I got a few blurry pics because of lighting but was able to get some good video of him before he snuck off to the trees. He is only a 5x5 this this year but I would consider him a monster bull. I feel lucky to have found him for the last 4 years and watch him develop into a big bull. I wish the pics were better so you could see how nice he is and I wish I could load video on here but I don't know how to do it or if I even have the right equipment to do it. In 2009 his right side was busted off. I hope you enjoy the story and pics anyway!
  20. Well I went up Thursday morning to check my cam and see if the elk were rutting yet. I saw 8-9 bulls and heard some bugels but they were not really rutting yet from what I saw. As I was walking down A ridge to where I was planning on glassing I saw a group of elk. They seemeed to be looking my direction so I thought they heard me or saw me coming. I saw a small 5x5 bull that was checking out a cow and thought what the heck and cow called a couple of times. When I cow called the third time I watched the bull turn and start up the ridge to me. I know he isn't huge but it was cool to see the bull the whole time and watch him respond to my calls and got to within 20-25 yards until he didn't see the cow he was looking for. And of course he did not bugle because as you know the little bulls usually stay quiet and sneek in!
  21. I am at the 202 and Guadalupe!

    Sept. 4 Bugling Bulls! (video)

Great video of those bulls, love the trash hanging from the second bulls antlers. I went up Thursday and called in a small 5x5 and saw around 8-9 bulls. The bulls would bugle every 5-10 minutes but they weren't going crazy like your video!
