    Lost One...

...I'm so pissed at myself. Get to the spot in the dark, jock up and walk 10 min. Got busted by 7 pigs at the top of a ridge I was going to sidehill to get to the honey hole. Cool, give them 5 min to chill as they went over the top. Start to the top of the hill, get there head on a swivel trying not to get busted again. They had moved over about 60 yds when I spotted them. They were feeding over the hill to get back to the side they caught me on. I let them all get over, then walked them down. Slowly was able to make out 2...but I could hear them all...they were making a bunch of racket pawing up the ground and rolling rocks over. Now it's down to 20 yds, closest w/ his butt facing me working a rockpile. He begins to turn sideways, digging like crazy. I start to draw and he stops and looks right at me. Crap!!!...busted agin...but then after a couple seconds went back to digging. SWEET...full draw set the pin on the boiler room...don't drop your arm...punch the release and hear the sweet sound of a direct hit and a woof. This is where things started to go wrong, I think. Where the pig was, he was right against an ocotillo. I distinctly remember seeing a piece of the ocotillo fly up after I shot. So, my arrow didn't completely pass thru...the vanes were still inside when he took off on a circling run, first standing broadside about 25 yds away...I could see blood running down the arrow. He came to w/in 12 yds and bedded down, staring straight at me the whole time...I thought he might be planning a charge. Great...no tracking, just wait till he goes to sleep. 3-4 minutes later, he gets up, I can see his nose working furiously...so I don't know if he winded me. Pig bolts on a dead run down into the canyon. I go to the edge (about 15 yds away) and watch where he goes. He makes it to the bottom, but doesn't follow the bottom left or right that I can see. 3 flat head carp bolt out of the bottom, then I hear 3 big snorts from the bottom...but not good enough to get a fix on where it came from. Wait 30, go to the last place I saw him...find no blood, no arrow. I looked under every bush, every rock, every tree and could not spot him. I went to the other wall and glassed, could not spot him. Went up and down the hillside looking on both sides of the wash. Spent about 4 hrs covering no more than 2 acres and didn't find any sign. I'm so pissed cuz hindsight sez I shoulda tried to knock another arrow, but then I didn't want to get caught again. VERY FRUSTRATING.

    Deer and rubs?

I've seen it on ocotillos (dunno if yours were on saplings). You could look down the trail and see three in a row. I saw one buck piss over one, skipped one and rubbed on another (or made another). Neat to watch, cept no way to even get close.

    I'm ready...

Any idea how much precipitation? Here in San Diego we were supposed to get a couple inches of rain...got maybe a half inch. Hopefully it missed us and nailed the southern units.

    CURSE IS BROKEN

+1000...just what I needed a few days before the opener!!! Gr8 story!!!
  15. OK Brain Trust: I'm looking at heading into the 34,35 or 36 areas for javalinas at the start of the year. How's the foot traffic down there? In years past (20 years ago) it was pristine. I was down there 4 years ago and there was trash everywhere and vehicles rumbling past camp in the wee hours. We saw 1 guy glassing the area...no rifle, camo's bow etc. Hunting alone and not carrying a sidearm...that you know of. Just wondering if law enforcement has gotten a bit of a handle on it. Thx. jim

WTG...how do guys get lions? Are they a by product of the late season hunt or are you guys targeting them...either way, more better for the deer. In cali its "the 3 S's" ...shoot, shovel and shut up

    Southern units and safety

thx for your replies...my problem is being from out of state, to go learn another area is gonna take some time...vs. just going where i know. That being said...is my life or a beatdown worth it? While in Az, I've met some great people in the field, as you'd expect. Carrying a long arm, I'm not really concerned...its holding only a bow that poses the problem. Even carrying a sidearm is not the be all. It's really too bad the us gov't isn't more proactive on this. I'm sure it reduces the amount of days afield for a number of people. I'll prolly just go back into the 36's, but maybe stay in a motel...it sucks, cuz the nighttime around a mesquite fire is worth more than -1/2 the trip. btw...anyone see what they're doing in Tijuana? These drug guys are killing and decapitating 30-40 people a week. Good luck to all and be safe out there!!!

Man that blows!!! It's really too bad, because thats a beatiful place to be this time of year. I remember a few years ago there was a BP guy who frequented this board...he told me there were places the trash was piled 6-8' high.

    Jan Bowhunting bucks and boars

Leavin in a couple hrs for 36b...2 days to nix the tag soup. Where I've been hunting, the carp are herded up but not the w/t's. Hope that changed w/ this front going thru. Saw a couple big carp in there...herd buck wouldn't get off his hill, I strolled past in the open at 75 yds and they all just stared. He had 8 does w/ him. Why can't a w/t do that for me? Then sat is time to let the air outta the rats! I'm taking my helmet cam outta my race car and see if I can video a hunt. good luck all!
