Even worse than that..... I was lucky enough to find myself at woods canyon lake the past couple of days for fishing. Me and my buddy spent 30 minutes filling a 55 gallon trash bag (about half full) of garbage from the shore line.... and thats just the area where we fished. ignorance and laziness to just throw it down and not pack it out. Be what boggles my mind, is there has to be a certain degree of "outdoorsman" that would lead one to the waters edge to enjoy the day. Are people that ok with trash to just contribute, rather than keeping it clean.

Where are you at? and any way we can come look at her?

So we have an older model pop up camper. I know that on some of the newer models they come factory-hard wired with a built in Carbon Monoxide alarm for the models that have a heater. So after waking up to 11 degrees two mornings in a row on an elk hunt, and last seasons deer hunt with a brisk 25 degree temp i broke down and bought a little buddy heater to use on coming hunts. I know that they come with built in devices such as automatic shut off for tipping, and a co2 monitor. I also know that several forums said to not rely on the Co2 sensor it comes with. I wanna buy a battery powered Co2 monitor for the camper, and i know they make them. Does anybody have any recommendations? The lower end ($20 price range) say that there is a temperature range of 40-100 degrees on them. Well, even with a little buddy doing all it can, it may not overcome the 11 degree outside tempreature. I would #1 hate to buy one if it doesnt work. And #2 if it gets cold enough that it wont work for us in the pop up. Thanks for the insight everyone.

Is it too soon to start wondering about next quail season? ha ha I know last season was bad because the amount of rain (too much, all at one time). But from what ive seen of rain falls for this year, we are still below what we should normally have. Just anxious to get back out at it. Good luck with the fall draw too btw.

Went up to woods canyon for the day this past saturday. Kinda realized how i grew up deprived (ha ha) as i wasnt exposed to fishing as a kid. Most people that we talked to had fairly good luck with just power bait. I didnt get any niblles at all. And after being "drafted" to untangle and repair my girlfriends reel the trout seemed to come alive. Of the four of us that went though, we onyl caught one (and had to put it back). but for those of you looking for some weekend fun... Woods canyon has been stacked with some 4500 trout in the past few weeks. Hopefully you can brave the crowds for the holiday weekend. good luck

Bowhunting Rabbits
mbiewer replied to mulie hunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Im kinda new to the small game aspect of rabbit hunting. I know some people posted recipes (in the food section) and mentioned eating rabbits in this thread. Whats the deal?... every one i talk to said to only hunt/eat them in months ending in "R". Is that true? something to do with parasites, fleas, and ticks. Is there a safe handling method to make them worth while all year round? -
So, we are on a "test drive" of a two year old german shorthaired pointer. Last night was our first night, but he shows alot of potential. Unfortunaetly, the dog we got is a 2 yr old male so some of the fundamental stuff might be long over due, or too late (as far as hunting is concerned). This is my first GSP, and im pretty clueless. Was looking for information and tips on how to start. I already spoke to Desert pheasants out in coolidge, but was looking for something a little more local and a little cheaper (in case he turns into a love hound, and not a bird dog ha ha). Walked him past the neighbors house last night before bed and he pointed on the concrete statue-ette of a horse pulling a cart (about the size of a tonka truck). hillarious.

Thanks everyone for the information, both public and private. As soon as the dog settles in i will start the training. .... and hopefully tales of success come next season

Pheasant Hunting
mbiewer replied to tjhunt2's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Been following your posts. man she looks like a great dog. Did you join Desert Pheasant, out in coolidge? how do you like it? Im in the process of adopting a 2 yr old GSP, wanna take him out to see if he has interests in birds -
Forgot to mention, think he has had some beginner training. the rescue group said the original owner kept him staked to a tree outside. But he is friendly and happy. We tried feeding the neighbor kids to him, but the dog didnt seem to care about the little people ha ha. Also, by the time we went to sleep, we either refreshed his memory for "sit" or he is an awefully fast learner and she had him working on "down". --- My guess is since i only wanted to go look, and she used her power to outvote me to take the dog home.... we are going to keep the dog irregardless of his hunting desires. (i couldnt justify spending big bucks on a dog that would be a pet most of the year, since im pretty new to quail hunting as well). Any easy way to test him out on being gun friendly, other than the obvious? The "foster dad" for the dog said he did great off leash. Just a little leary of trying that too soon, until he knows where his new home is. ha ha

how much for just the 870? -
hey Cody, (and the rest) thanks for your generosity. Right now we work opposite shifts so i dont see her, and am not able to discuss this awesome find. I go outa town this friday and comeback saturday. (im doing the ragnar relay, its a 12 person team run from wickenburg to tempe -200 miles- so really i get back at the finish line on saturday at 5pm but might not have functioning though until sunday. ha ha) I have just barely conviced her to consider getting a gsp. I think they are awesome but Heather (and her mom) grew up training police k9's so its an adjustment for her. I would love to accept the dog from Robert... But if you can give this dog a happy home, by all means please do. What seems like an "awesomely amazing good idea" to ME.... might get me kicked out. ha ha I would need a bit more time to convince her
-
Hey! if CW4192 doesnt want the dog, i would love to come and meet her. I have always wanted a gsp. I was trying to "haggle" with my girlfirend to get one, ha ha. We are both active, but due to our schedules dont think we could be active enough for a pup. This would be a sweet oppurtunity. let me know what happens

So... maybe everyone is still out inthe field... any success stories for the opening weekend for the ham hunt? Iwanted to be out there (37b) on opening morning for my hunt, but reality had different plans for me. Gotta settle for the second weekend (luckily thats an option) .... so maybe there will be a few left. Was hoping to see the pictures, and or stories form those succesful this weekend
-
what unit did you hunt? awesome pigs
-
talking to a friend at a super bowl party for the low down on 37b (where im going this weekend) didnt give me much hope. Rudy said they hiked (each day) for 3 days and didnt see anything. He also said they woke up friday to a windy 19 degrees ( so with wind chill.....?) Also said he bumped into some other group there that had been out camping in aniticpation of the hunt. with a total of 6 days for that group and they hadnt found em. Makes my hunt this weekend look bleak. Hopefully with the warming weather itl help bring them back out of hiding.

Afternoon quail spot
mbiewer replied to mbiewer's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Sorry, i live in chandler. I have primarily been going out for quail in 37 b (out by the 96 ranch area). Kinda been doubling up and scouting for javelina at the same time. One trip out was out towards gold canyon. It has been 3 quail total for the season, and it took me 6 trips to get those. ha ha. Im happy with "one-zies and two-zies" also, but it would be awesome to introduce her with a high success rate. thanks for the warm welcome to the site. -
So this might sound like a desperate plea... For starters, this was my first season for hunting quail. being new and inexperienced i only got a few to show for it through out the season. (i didnt go out my first time till thanksgiving weekend.) I immidiately fell in love with it. I like being outdoors (like everyone else here) and i used each outing for quail as new adventure. I came back after my nearly 6 trips, with only 3 quail (total, yeah i know...pathetic). To make matters worse i always came back to my girlfriend who would ask, "and this is fun for you?, why do you want me to go with if you cant find anything?". Finally this past weekend (i had MLK day off and came back empty handed)... she said she wants to shoot the shotgun. (she is an avid hand-gunner, and a dang good shot... my own verison of "Annie Oakley") Does anyone know of a good mid day/afternoon spot for quail? I would love to take her out and let her experience the fun of going for quail, and the enjoyment of some success along with that. She works 2nd's sometimes into 3rd shift...so going out early in the morning wont work for her (it might be when she's finally coming home from work, and for my safety... she needs some sleep ha ha). I also know that its the tail end of a relatively bad season for quail. Shes been out for javelina and wants to do elk next season with me... i was just hoping to introduce her into the fine art of Quailing.

we will be out there on frid-sunday.... not sdure where we will be camped, but if you dont wanna go alone, always nice to have extra eyes.... and i hear they usually travel in packs * (this is a joke, becuase the last units we were in they magically all disappeered for the duration fo the hunt weekend.)

Has any one been out lately. (yeah i know Chrismas is next weekend, and priorities have shifted)... Just wondering if any one has been having any luck or knows where the hot spots are.
