    Coconino travel managment

The forest access/road closures are so confusing. We spent time up in unit 8 last fall (Scouting, turkey, and cow elk). I know of at least one road that is marked "closed" on one end, that connects deeper into the forest to other roads.... that int marked closed at all. And like others have said, here isnt "much closure" to the closed areas. Heck, again off one of the "main" forest roads, there was a closed spur. In plain sight of the road closed sign there were two of the mobile mansion rv's 50 feet from the sign all set up for an extended stay. I know the state (along with game and fish) is trying to develop their own access plan
  4. I seen this on The outdoor Hub Ezine that i get everyday. I dont know how old the footage is, (from june, but what year). Hopefully its not gone around before and it's still entertaining for some of you out there. Way to close to a black bear for my tastes, even if its a cub. ha ha ha

I may very well have misinterpretid the data incorrectly, but this is what i was looking at ( Survey, harvest and hunt data for small and big game. http://www.azgfd.gov/regs/HuntArizona2012.pdf) Either way... it does have the data for "number of bonus point" and "success drawn" for each.

    Draw odds

Its all "horse apples" really. ha ha. There's a memeber on here that is well into consecutive hunts in the double digit range. I myself put in with my brother, typically, and have for a number of years. Usually its the same unit. If we get to go, we get to go. Based on the data from the hunt harvest reports (available at game and fish). With all the combinations of bonus points and applicants there was 508,616 (yes i added them up)"people"* that applied. (*counting each bonus point as an applicatin, because thats how it actually does work). In general, there are 25,034 available hunt tags this year for elk (not counting the champ hunts and a few of the other similar hunts). Giving a 04.9% chance at an oppurtunity to go. (now this percentage will change if you have bonus points yourself. Discussing the draw odds with an individual at work who had no bonus points like myslef, it was easier math). It took me three years to get drawn for my cow tag last year. This year we got drawn for bull, with no bonus points...and using my BofA card. Go figure. ha ha
  7. "Firebird" is closing, but only by name. There's already talks ongoing about the tribe opening it back up as their own enterprise. (Currently, and for the past 30 years?, its been a lease agreement with one individual). Shocking that they "couldnt agree to terms" with the current private organization.

    draw results?

BofA did refuse to finance. or loan money to an arms manfacurer (cant recall the entire story). Ive got BofA and still get drawn. They cant dictate how you spend YOUR money, they can only decide what they can fund as an institution. Kenny, i got the same call regarding my atm card. Sounds like they may have had a concern, so they just sent new cards (with new numbers on them) .

    draw results?

As long as its a valid card, it doesnt matter. They send the email out (and did for the fall draw too ) after so many people complained last year's elk draw. Its just a reminder that if your card expired within the last two months (new card has a new number on it), that its up to you to update it, OTHERWISE, the valid card you submitted with at the time of the deadline is an invalid card at the time of the draw. And TJ, i think you should sit on your hands anyways and give the rest of us a chance. ha ha. If you remember back to last year, we texted each other when you got charged for last years elk hunt, as i was on the way to the G&F expo.... which is next weekend.... bum bum buuuuuh! (just saying is all, ha ha). Strange coincidence.

    Credit Card Hit!

last year it was the last weekend of march, i remember talking to my buddies on the drive out to the game and fish expo at ben avery when people were reporting that they were getting charged. Keep holding your breath. ha ha

    Phoenix Marathon

RAGNAR! I tricked my sister into doing the ragnar relay with me this year (end of Feb)... we wanted to the ' Changs half, but had the forsight to see that work was building up and our training got sacked just before the holidays due to my deer and elk hunts. Ragnar is a team of 12 (6 people in each van)...and one person starts running in wickenburg and the last person ends in tempe. 3 sections per runner in sequence with the others. my total distance is 17.5 miles. which isnt much spread over 3 pieces, except for theres no sleeping invlolved. Good luck on your run!

    Unit 8 late rifle elk

Hey Mike, Co rd 73 (or what becomes fourth st in williams) is kinda the east west divider. We normally camp some where off that road. Lotsa good areas but never been fortunate enough to fill a tag in the few times ive been up there. Just past williams on the west end of the unit is some cedar scrub area, and there is an elevation drop the further south you go, quite rapidly. Be ready for the cold. I was kinda banking on the 60/30 temps that were predicted for the past few days, but yesterday they changed all that. now 44/21 for sunday and slowly creaps back up after that. (at least they arent predicting snow like they did yesterday.). Not sure what they will do with that. Last hunt, i seen a cold snap push them all out of the high country. Alot depends upon the pressure previously as well, as you probably already know. Ive seen plenty of cows up tere the past couple of months though. Alot of road closures in the area. Odd ones at that... We were up for turkey and one end of the road was marked closed, while the other end wasnt flagged at all. Like Elkaholic said... get the map. Me and my brother will be out there with two cow tags. my number is 602-885-1527, if you wanna trade tips/info/ or need any help.

    Where to for 2013?

So im at a loss as to where to submit this year. didnt see anything in 37 b and from what we talked to different people, neither did they. (Surprising because of the large amount of tags avaialble). Anyways, was considering 37a or 33. (Brother lives in tucson, and looking for something closer to him, since hes making the three trips north with me this fall). Any ideas thoughts or reasons why youre putting in where you will?

So the FS is expecting us to be psychics...

Well a few key points to remember: #1 USFS (the group behind -at least the enforcement of - the closures is a federal agency. These closures arent coming through the state, but going nationwide. So yes, it will affect more than just coconino in the long run -Use the tools that are available to us as outdoor enthusiasts: like someone mentioned before, this was an extremely discussed topic around elk draw time.maps (links easily found on coco's website even downloadable to smart phone), and other hunter expereinces (after all, that is wha the forum is truely founded on). From the ten years i had my jeep, if the road wasnt numbered, more than likely it "didnt exist" and or wasnt a legal road. It adds another step to the preparation process. #2 An uneducated hunter is more detrimental to the outdoors way of life than an educated "anti". They dont show the thousands of us on the news for getting a clean shot, hiking and packing an animal out but the "drive by hunters" and poachers are always helping to fuel the regulatory fires. #3 it does absoluely suck to be singled out. Ive been spot checked (or better yet, my camp has been) during a trukey and javelina hunts only to see the warden turn and drive past the other camps that were in close proximiy. My experiences both as a witness to and a reciever of LEO interactions (just like anything else in life) Attitude is key. Getting frustrated is part of being human, how we deal with those frustrations is part of being an adult. * i've been on plenty of local LEO ride alongs and have seen many people honestly and respectfully come to a new understanding about what went wrong either with or without getting the infraction. #4 Would you want to be in their shoes? how many guns, knives, or various implements of destruction do you take with you on an outing (hunting or camping...) to have a lone game warder or forest ranger be out on their own with the only possible support being ____ miles away? they may be edgy or even stand offish to have to enforce something that comes from a ruling from across the country by suit & ties. Much like the falacy of gun control... the closures wont keep the rule breakers from doing what they arent supposed to. But with the federal closures, an overactive preservation of sorts, will make it easier to spot the ones out there being where they arent supposed to be. However, it is much easier to say "the forest is being damaged, nobody can use it". (Similar to what they did with bull dog canyon east of mesa by the river,... and what will happen eventually out by sycamore creek). It is a drastic measure on their part. It does force us as a group to adapt our ways. There is no telling what the winds of change will bring for many of us as we are still active enthusiasts, and certainly unpredictable for generations to come.
