i remember the year before i started to hunt down in 30b (hot october hunt) OMG!! But buddy of mine shot his deer a bigger one took off so we went after it (my dad w/tag) anywho we couldn't find him we ended up at the very end of the canyon into the flats. We sat had a snack sitting under a tree. All of a sudden two green helicopters come out of nowhere buzzing 100 feet or so above ground like they were doing training. Loud as heck and nothing budged around us not even a bird. it was over in seconds but man were they cool. -

2 years ago i bought some Nikon action EX 10x50, there waterproof and pretty durable. i think they were around 250-300 dollars at sportsmens. Last time i was there couple months ago they still had them. they also have 15x, check them out when you get a chance. there a little cheap but gets the job done. 200"mulie

Got out there in the late-mid morning, didn't see much at all. However, my main goal for the day was to my bearings of the unit / roads etc. I have a few more weekend to scout before Nov. Next time I will be there before sunrise.... Redman ya the last time didn't see much either spent most of time in cooler high country. can't see far and wide but there was plenty of tracks .. . .. . . im gunna try to go out next weekend on the north side

well this is an old thread but finally read it. what i noticed last year during my hunt (whitetail) it was a little warm (heat wave) we somehow got up on this hill that was covered in cactus and loose rock. while we are trying to get down. we kept an eye on the water hole. within 2 hours 11 different deer hit the water hole 2pm-4pm. they would make there way down from draws from all differnet directions mostly doe's . . .watched two younger bucks work there way down for 1 hour before dark (spike and fork) I like october hunt cause deer are still moving to water a lot more than the winter months. The bigger deer tend to water at night just because they are smart and maybe had some close calls before the moon and hunting pressure will determine when they water . . . . and if i don't get one i look forward to the archery rut hunt summer months they water 2-3 days. winter months they water 3-4 days.

wish i could it was mine . . .but haven't been up there for a week and didn't bring my tripod on that trip. *by the way did you see anything while you were out there??

1). welcome and congrats on that great lookin deer. 2). you really don't have to wear camo at all, my buddy wears an orange vest . . . NOT A BAD IDEA SO WON'T GET SHOT ON ACCIDENT. i wear camo with orange hat in any hunt. back in janurary i snuck up to 60 yards on 5 mule deer one of them was a 3x4 long tined buck nice looking. but when they finally started to move they got up on the other hill instead of following the hill i was on . . . one of the does didn't like something on my side of the hill. (no cactus or trees on my side, so i'm the only thing about 4 feet and stuck out like a sore thumb). She couldn't make me out she sat there staring while the others where feeding. she would try to fake me out by turning around take two or three steps and then spin back around and torward me . . . .really crazy (wishing i had a camera with me). anyway she did that 5 times. she stil didn't feel right and basically just move to the next hill and settled down. so i think camo does help some what but not required for hunting. Also had dozen elk feeding all around me back in 2005 season unit 27. 3). you really don't need scent remover/spray whatever . . . as long as you keep the wind in your favor. but if you do get some dirt/wet dirt works good. 4.) i have early october tag and let you know what i seen after my hunt. except the huge deer that i might miss but try in dec/jan archery

i haven't had one stolen. but would figure if someone would really want to they look around water holes and draws for game trails. I plan on having cam only 1-2 weeks in one spot then move it

i went camping couple miles away from big lake over the weekend. heard one bugle in the mourning and couple at night, not the big boys sounded like little rags horns, and had to give out a couple mews to get an answer . . . . .and the first one to answer me was another cow. they weren't really fired up but give it couple days with cooler temps . . . . they should be fired up here in a week. also woke up to elk 60 yards from tent . . . didn't mind me untill i opened the truck door to grab binos.

ok i know i'm boring you guys now. but 3-4 years ago hunting in 30b. i was coming back to camp to eat lunch. it was a long hike in and out that mourning and haven't seen anything. as i was making my way threw the cat claws i stumble upon a rabbits foot!!! ya and it was still pretty fresh too. i picked it up and put it in a bag. when i got to the road, a doe yelped and jumped across the road nearly running me over ! i could of reached out and touched it. it was a really cool experience. -
shedding that velv. and be starting to rank themselves here pretty quick. can't wait
