If you’ve never shot an elk before, I would shoot every animal you possibly can before that hunt. Coyotes, deer, bear… Just so you can get used to shooting things in the wild. This will probably be the last tag you ever get in that unit, like the other guy said. So make it a great hunt. I would start scouting cow herds this spring and keep tabs on where they are and where the water is. The bulls will show up, during the rut. Even if you had to take out a loan, it might be worth it to get a Guide, like Ground And Pounders or something.

Ima get in the fur coat business in just a minute.

Need Advice: Family Friendly AZ towns not in the valley

I’m not sure how great I am, but thanks!! There’s a lot of great people up here. -
Got a youth tag for my youngest , and either my oldest son or I got a tag. He put in for bull, I put in for cow.

I don’t get what needs to change. You can kill a big buck any time. Quotas keep from over harvesting. The only change I’d like to see is metered quotas. If a unit has 50 deer quota, maybe like shut it down in the early when it hits 35, and save 15 for late. and mandatory reporting or checking. That’s a no brainer.

Montanas block management also seems to work well, at least last time I watched Warden.

Missouri has landowner tags. The system seems to work well. But you can’t transfer them. It’s just for landowners to hunt their own property. if they would let us bait animals again, private property is a non-issue. You can just always lure them off with a bale of hay.

I got a 1st gen sequoia… I’ve been planning on selling, but now I’m suddenly having 2nd thoughts, lol…

What are your thoughts about guides who sell GPS pins online to Honey holes? There’s this guy named Timmy Winslow and he sold GPS pins to multiple out-of-state hunters in unit 23, promising them that they were the only ones who had these GPS pins. Until they showed up at the same spot the same time. My son was there… It got awkward fast for those guys. I personally think this is unethical, and that a guide should accompany his client in the field. Not a huge fan of guides, but I understand their place.

Both. Seems like water is just bad luck for me. I walk up to the tank and the deer are already there, or the wind shifts at the worst possible time, or someone drives by on a sxs, or it dumps rain the night before… I could go on.

In all my years I’ve never once had a buck come into water. I’ve had several does come in. And I’ve sat water a lot. I’ve also never seen a game warden at any time while I’ve been hunting.

I’d hunt bait if it was legal. I’m upset they changed it. I have no moral problem with bait. I’m out here trying to kill stuff so I can eat it, not see how difficult I can make my life. I killed my first bull on bait. I also fish with worms.

True. I should clarify, during hunting season when people are racing side by sides from one water hole to another, I think most of the watering happens at night.
-
Them critters got all night to get water. I don’t think your theory pans out. I think most of the time animals water at night anyways. Slim chance they’re gonna hit water during the day.

I still don’t see a problem with the way things are. OTC archery lets me kill a deer every year. When I get 20 plus points, I can draw my strip tag, or late kiabab. I’m still trying to figure out what the problem is with the current system? because you can’t seem to get it done with a rifle, you want an archery draw? that makes no sense. there is no problem. Archery guys killing dinks lets you kill a 180 in the rifle season.
-
The rifle hunts are tricky. I got 16 points, not sure what to do. I want a strip tag, but now I’m confident I could get at least a 180 out of a regular unit, but do I want to burn 16 points on a sub-par unit, and gamble that someone won’t bugger my hunt up? I still can’t draw a December tag in a sub par unit with 16 points.
-
its because early rifle hunts occur as mule deer are transitioning from summer range to pre-rut range. They are super hard to locate those weeks, so G&F can sell more tags, with lower success, and make more money.

IMG_3393 2.HEIC found this one just laying on the ground where anyone could have killed him, in a overhunted, easy access spot. it was likely a lion kill. I do see 190 plus regularly, but I have no bowhunting skills so I just shoot the first meat buck that gives me a clear shot, in most cases. I will not guide for money. If I take someone out, it is always for free. Mostly I just help kids.

I see plenty of giant muley bucks when I am out.

Out of state dudes should have to draw a unit specific tag, so they can’t float from unit to unit. Also, I think 90% of the out of state guys hunt 23 until it’s closed. It’s crazy how many out of state guys I see up here. I don’t see anything wrong with the current system. Maybe back off the rifle tags and lower the quota until a unit recovers. Mule deer are boom and bust like lemmings. For every spike that’s killed by the road, a giant 4x4 gets to pass on his genes. I guess I’m not against killing spikes, because a guy has to start somewhere. When you’re a kid, it’s hard to get 40 yards from a mature buck. Coyotes kill more deer than all of us combined. How many of you are killing predators?

I saw a nice 170 class 4x4 chasing a doe in 23 on the way home today. I forgot my phone, so no pic on this one. 😢

Saw these bucks on my way to work last week in 4b and 3c. I’m not sure what’s going on in open units.

Good to hear there’s a few good ones left.

You could be making 1500 a pop. 😜
