Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!
bojangles replied to AZ_Native's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
this was suggested watching, i would almost say "required watching" if you want to choose a broadheads. give your wife the credit card, send her to the mall, and sit back on the couch and listen to gillingham's advice. i would never use a fix blade again, if i could help it. chalk it up to personal experience, coupled with the advice of one of the best bow shots in the world. -
all i know is, i bought the IQ sight, and i can shoot better than ever. my last session i was humming them in there at 80 yards with ease. i think with a little practice i could be doing 100 yards no problem. also, i got a pse premonition, that has a solid back stop. so i'm always money on my back tension.

yep, looks like it's gone.

there was somebody on here that had a really nice stumpy for sale. let me see if i can find it.

this is important, yet has no comments. if it was a post about craft beer, the superbowl, or the game and fish website, we'd be on page 5. but since our liberties our at stake, no one cares. thanks Bill!!

seems like units in the high 20's and low 30's have some tags left over from time to time.

you pound, and i mean pound a bike 5 to 10 hours a week, and you'll get skinny. do that and drop soda and dessert. don't over eat on recovery. all ya need, bro.

makes sense. that said, how does having a lot of bonus points help you get a low "random" number? because if it did, it wouldn't be random. I thought you got your name tossed in the hat again for every bonus point you have. while i'm not too particular about this elk hunt, i'll probably draw that late archery tag, though it would be nice to know i had at least a shot at the rifle tag. i'm not sure how to approach the draw with these 2 hunts in mind. it does make a difference to me for deer however. right now i'm banking points while i whack the first deer that walks in front of me during archery season. however, i would like to enter the draw when i i get 10 bonus points. (when i hit 10 points, i probly won't shoot a buck w/ my bow unless it's a monster) i think i have 7 right now. but i'm pretty set on 13b, unless the deer situation changes up there. So, how do i approach that? just put in 13b for my first choice and leave the rest blank? or put in for 13b on every choice? You can do either and it will have the exact same effect. However, if you are applying for 13b rifle it won't matter. You won't be anywhere near the bonus pass with 10 points. true, but, last i checked, you get legit draw odds at 10 points. (it was a few years back, before the that draw odds website started charging for their services, now i don't know where to look.) anything below 10 points was miniscule. seems guys have been pulling that tag regularly with 14 points, that i've heard anyways. im sure it will go up a point or 3 by the time i get there.

i put in for 22s, rifle then late archery. because i live there. that's why. i know the archery hunt can be miserable, but, it's an easy draw, and i'd rather hunt than sit here on cwt and look at everybody else's pics. so misery or not, i'm going for it. plus, living here, gives me an advantage. i think. maybe. lol.

this is confusing. what is the 1-2 pass? the more i read about the draw process, the less i understand it. my first choice was a late rifle tag that's relatively hard to get. my second choice is a late archery tag that's very easy to get. are you saying i have no or little chance of getting my first choice?

After getting skunked all the way around in 2015, i was more than happy to drop the string come January. I found a spot that was maybe only a mile from the trailhead, tops, that seemed to be the happening place. I had another stand already in place, that was a couple miles in on another trail, but i could access it by a shorter route through private property. So, a couple hundred yards in, here i am toting a tree stand, and all the gear, i bumped 8 does out of a draw. I looked long and hard at that place to put my treestand, but opted to hike further in to my original spot. 3 does and a buck were bedded in my original spot, so i decided to go ahead and hang the stand there. Another doe grazed 200 yards east of me, and when i got the stand hung, 4 more does walked by just out of range. It felt like a good spot. Then it snowed. I had to wait a couple days till i could even get up to the trail head. Meanwhile, i looked for muleys, but didn't see anything too promising. maybe a dozen deer, and a couple of smallish bucks that weren't in a great position to make a long stalk. One evening, when i was glassing for muleys, somebody broke into my old ford truck, parked along the beeline, and stole all my gear that was in the truck. This included a Gerber backpack, an Easton bag that goes to my Easton pack, my SKB bow case, and all my arrows and broadheads and tools that i didn't have with me. I think i had 3 arrows and 2 broadheads to my name at this point. So, after the snow melted enough to get to the trailhead, i made the grueling hike through knee deep snow to look for tracks. My first tree stand didn't look too productive, it only had one set of tracks under it in the 2 to 3 day old snow. So i checked out the new stand. When i got to the draw where i'd jumped the 8 does, i found it was hammered with tracks. I continued on to hunt. Nothing. I went back to my stand the next morning, and jumped a buck out of the aforementioned draw. From that point, i knew i had to put a stand in there somewhere. I saw a forkhorn 99 yards away, and that was it. So i dug through the shed and found another stand, a climber i rarely use. I got it all set up. It was a couple days later before i could make it out again. I got there at first light and climbed really high, maybe 18-20 feet. I got settled in, and a doe came in, her head to the ground and ears forward. I stood up and got ready, knowing she was in heat. I heard a buck grunt twice, but i couldn't find him. Eventually I could make out a large, grey mass under a tree. I couldn't see his head, but i knew this was a buck. He was pretty heavy, too. I ranged him at 50 yards. After a few minutes he began to walk, I could see his antlers above his ears, and could see they weren't big by any means, but would still be a legal buck. He stopped to nibble on a bush at 31 yards. I pulled off my glove, drew and let one fly. Crack! It sounded like i hit a tree. (i think the steep angle caused the arrow hot hit high) The deer jumped, and looked around frantically, but couldn't find me to save his live. I quickly drew again, this time with the last broadhead i owned, and held a little lower. He was probly 35 yards at at this point. This time i heard a Crunch! Sounded like a shoulder shot. (He was quartering towards me.) He lowered his head and trotted off. His trot soon became a limp. He stopped, and i thought he'd go down, but he didn't. He limped behind a scrub oak, and i lost sight of him. I prayed for that deer to go down quickly. I waited for 45 minutes, and got down. As soon as i got down, another doe came in. I stood still till she winded me from 20 yards, snorted and stomped off. I went to where the buck was standing, and sure enough, my first arrow was sticking out of the tree. No sign of the second. No blood, either. My heart sank. Not a drop in the snow anywhere. I looked down to the scrub oak that the buck disappeared into, and another forkhorn walked up to the oak, and stared into the brush, sniffing and tip-toeing around. I shooed the little buck on, and went to investigate. Sure enough, he had found my dead deer. The angle was so steep that i hit him high on the shoulder, and the arrow exited in front of the back leg on the opposite side, through his belly. My brand new PSE Premonition, maxed out at 70 pounds, shot a Gold Tip Vapor Pro, tipped with an Ulmer Edge straight through the shoulder blade and out the other side. He was so torn up on the inside, you'd have thought i shot him with a .300 win mag. But the food from his stomach plugged the lower hole, keeping blood from coming out, and the high shoulder shot was too high to bleed. When I cut him open, he was full of blood from the double lunger. I bowed my head and said a quick prayer of thanks, and began the pack-out. He's not a monster, but i am one happy hunter!!!

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/12/21/obama-administration-enacts-protections-for-lions.html http://www.foxnews.com/science/2016/02/01/huge-population-endangered-lions-found-in-ethiopia.html?intcmp=trending absolute madness. I wonder how the natives feel about having a half a million lions floating around, munching on the locals. I lived in Africa for a couple of summers, and it's funny how you never hear in the news when a lion eats a person, but you sure hear about when a person kills a lion. And lions still eat people on a regular basis. imho, that's a criminal misplace of priorities.

i'm big into tree stands. i've got 3 out there right now, and killed a buck a couple weeks ago out of one. the number one thing with tree stands is the wind. if the wind is bad, get out. or better yet, don't go. that's why i have several out there. one for each wind scenario. the second thing is, you have to hunt where the deer are. i know this seems obvious, but i'm not gonna hang a stand if i saw a doe on that hill one time. i'm gonna look for well worn travel corridors covered with deer poop. i want deer falling out of the trees, or i'm moving on. i like to find where the does are moving in the fall, and hang stands in their travel corridors, then wait for the rut to kick in. then try to get a buck following a hot doe. I don't sit all day. i try to figure out when their moving, and slip in an hour before. the longer you sit, the more your scent moves around, and the fewer deer you'll see. I like to spend 4 hours in the stand, max. I only like to hunt a stand once a week. if deer continuously smell you in a spot, they gone, bro. and they aint comin' back. leave the book at home, and the phone in your pocket. You won't hear a deer 40 yards behind you. You've got to keep your eyes up. Hang your stand as high as you can. Wait for them to look away before you draw. If you can stand before you shoot, you'll be better off, but you'll have to do that before they get close enough to see you. Silence is golden. make sure you bow doesn't squeak, and your jacket doesn't catch on the bark of the tree. Wear a safety harness. bring a rope to pull your bow up and lower it back down the tree. be careful with the broadheads, don't cut yourself and bleed to death. i don't like to eat in the stand. food is smelly. no coffee. not only does it smell, then you hafta pee. i bring a small bottle of water to sip, and an empty one to pee in, if i'm feeling real cautious. don't leave the bottle of pee in your truck. maybe your buddies truck, but not yours. you don't want to make a mistake in a week, thirsty moment. i'm not a trophy hunter, by any means. i whack the first legal thing that trots by. that's just how i roll. one of the newest lessons i've learned, is use the IQ sight if you can. i missed 4 coues in a row, because i was torquing my bow and didn't know it. it's one thing to shoot on the ground, or even practice out of your stand. But the deer never come in exactly where they are supposed to. You have to lean, and twist, or maybe wear a glove because it's cold. All this torques the bow. the IQ sight will help you correct that in the moment of truth. i wish i'd bought that sight years ago. there's one really big buck i shot at, and back strapped him because i was wearing a glove. He comes in on camera, but never when i'm there. He has my number. It haunts me. You make mistakes, and learn.

i have a friend who has a hand made double barrel shotgun, probably French, mid 1800's, and a winchester lever action 308 that he wants to put up for sale, but has no idea of their worth. where does somebody go for firearm appraisals? thx! i think the winchester is more common, but i was scratching my head on the antique muzzle loader shotgun. i have no inclination of it's value, neither does he, but it does look valuable.

thanks! you know, i couldnt tell what guage, looked like it may have been somewhere around a 16 guage. it's interesting looking, and definitely old. not sure if it has value or not. i was hoping to get pics this weekend the the wife hit a deer, in fountain hills of all places, and now we have no car. so...i'll do what i can. also, the lever gun is a pre-64, not sure if that helps out non model 70's?

i'm also interested in 218 bee ammo. i have a hard time wondering why that round is not more popular.
