couple seasons back walked off from the truck to glass the other side of this small canyon... had to walk farther than expected (yup, left the bow in the truck) found a good spot I could see and sat down to set up tripod and heard the brush start bustin.... 3 nice coues bucks come flying out down the small canyon and up the other side onto a flat. the deer settled and started working the finger and looked like they were going to bed. watched em for a while and they went behind some thick cedar trees so I went back to the truck and drove around to the other side of the flat. thinking they may have slipped out to the bigger canyon not far. I grabbed my bow and decided to walk the finger. nocked an arrow and started to creep through the cedars. get in about 100yds and come around a thick cedar and there they are all 3 standing there like 35 yds. all 4 of us probably had the oh sh1t look on our faces I know they did. already clipped on I drew my bow... (I had a trophy taker drop away pronghorn) I had my finger on the arrow as I was creeping and it apparently didn't dawn on me to let go as I drew................ the nock came off the string and the arrow slid backwards and hit the ground at my feet... as I muttered some bad words still at full draw my finger pulled the trigger and my bow went TWANG! all of this happened so fast....... my heart went from full speed to broken in 2 seconds! if you have a visual just start off with a lip squeak to see if he acknowledges it then go from there. use his body language.. sometimes they just go back to mousing... then you have to figure out from there try to get his attention without blowin him outta there. I like squeaks and bird sounds. they have exceptional hearing and doesn't take muck to be heard, just gotta give that can't resist sound , if you can't squeak with your lips keep a mouse squeaker with you. I just use the back of my hand.... works about 8 out of 10 times when I have a visual. James

What are they coming to right now??
JLW replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
it's cold... they gotta eat. if they hear rabbit rabbit rabbit.... they'll be cautious and may hang up to watch and see if it is the real deal. try bird distress and start with the volume low for a couple minutes. interrogation howl usually works for me this time of year. a long howl or 2 with a bark in between. I start almost all my sets with 1 if I'm after yotes. people are everywhere right now too with all the archery deer and pig hunters, this can keep them cautious as well. if you were up somewhere on the rim or winslow they would probably come screemin in to the call. I bet standman is probably slayin the fox up in his neck of the woods. next month they'll be pairing up for mating. James -

was out saturday with 6ANut, found 2 groups of does early watched em for a while no bucks.. left em alone and came back to check on em later and 6 does turned into 9 and then 13 still no bucks...... these deer were feeding maybe 40yds from a few cows and didn't give a rip. went to check on the other group and only glassed up 1 single doe... moved to get a better vantage and she gave the slip. come on Christmas day! James

there are no more deer in and around dugas and any of the roads discussed in this thread. anyone wanting to chase deer should go to bloody basin or 7 springs. thank you for your cooperation! James

in 7E saw a big 4x with 10 does and a 2 pt on the late rifle bull hunt. he was big and swollen. I'm sure it will get going for the mulies, the coues are definitely pre rut... saw a bunch of fresh rubs in 23. weather is not the only factor in the rut.... moon stars, tide...... when a doe is ready she is ready.
