What contributes most to harvesting MONSTER BUCKS
WHT_MTNMAN replied to coues7's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I believe the single most important thing is TIME. If you scout and hunt enough you will find areas that produce monster bucks consistently and if you hunt enough you will be in the right place at the right time. Skills like glassing, patience and being able to shoot straight are next in line. Its funny how the people I know that kill the biggest bucks regularly are the same ones that are out scouting or hunting all the time. -
Lark as always I enjoy your bullwideon posts, poor soul didn't make his movie.

What I've found is that they bed earlier or may be bedded when the sun comes up but I usually see them move around a bit between 8-10am and then start to come out earlier in the evening.

Great looking buck btw, but 18" by 18" at 500 isn't that impressive, and most good 300's with a bit of work should do alot better. I like the .270 wsm. That is my choice, except my 300 ultra shooting 210 vld's

Nice job Joe, Richard told me he found evidence of August. Cool story. Houston

Well I haven't posted in a long time. This year has been crazy and I figured if I didn't post a few pictures now I never would. I don't have pictures of everything but this is how it all went down. I drew a Gila tag in NM and hunted for 6 1/2 days and didn't find a big bull, but when friends showed up Rob and Joe I decided to take this bull. Thanks again guys. for more stories, Rob posted this on AZSJ here is the link link I then hunted with a buddy of mine for 4 days, coming close to a few big bulls calling a few in and having a great time and he took this bull the day I was to return and help. Huge congrats Dan. Over the last year I've been working on getting a rifle together. I had a guy here in Payson build me a gun. This thing is awesome. It is a 300 ultra Remington action with a 28 1/2 inch Schneider barrel on Hi teck specialities stock. Shoots under 1/2 inch at 200 yards on good days. 200 yard group with 210 vld 90 gr retumbo Here it is with the claw I helped on an early rifle hunt, what a wonderful lady and she made the first kill with my new rifle through trees and loved both the claw and the gun. Then I went up and helped my brother on his first deer hunt.

The guy that put it together got it as a blank and you can put it on any action I believe with a little work. Kinda funny he got the barrel and asked me how long I wanted it, I just told him to make it as long as he could out of the blank, I think it is right at 28 1/2 inches long. Thanks, can't wait for my wifes Dec. hunt should be a fun time.

Nice job on some great bucks and I enjoyed the write-up. pretty funny.

Great bucks and way to get out there and get it done. Rough looking country, you guys did great.

It can be a really tough hunt for mature bucks after the other seasons, my advice would be to find the most remote area you can find and start walking. The south end of the Sierrita mtns hold lots of deer but finding a buck is tough, walk far in the dark and glass all day. Good luck, you will see lots of does for sure.

Yep.that's his mug

I have made a small survival/first aid kit that is always in my pack. I have anesthetic, syringe, needles, sutures etc...

Absolutely beautiful pictures, love that woody.

I agree with them being pricey, but you usually get what you pay for. Picking up a used one at this price is great. Look at this Outdoorsmans medium tripod with rifle attachments. 812 yards and best of all extremely light weight. When I archery hunt I'll be using it without the rifle attachment. Not sure where the bad words are coming from, I like mine.

Two beautiful bucks..way to get out and scout looks like it payed off nicely.

Marty Lamb, I just met him a while ago, but his work is as good as I've seen and I'm very happy.

Thanks for the comments, it has been a busy year and I will try to get some other pictures of some of the other things we've done. Couple answers to some questions I got. Gun w/o scope bases and rings is right at 7 1/2 to 8 I believe. Break is almost 2 inches impressive work and looks better in person. Factory trigger, 1 pound 12 ounces or close too, I may get a new trigger but this one is good. He did some custom cutting of the bolt handle, rear of bolt etc.., close up of break. close up of bolt

Kinda on a side note, when I was a kid I read a book about Pecos Bill and his horse widowmaker and I always thought it would be cool to "name" a gun even though it sounded a bit cheesy, but I love this gun, it shoot awesome so maybe I'll name it black widow maker or something stupid, but hey I'm impressed and very happy.

I talked to Ric and got permission to put his mug on the site so here he goes.. I wasn't able to be with them on the shot because I had to go back to work, but he made a good shot with pretty bad winds. Nice job Ric.

Took a break to take the kids out bear hunting and squirrel hunting. Found a few bears but couldn't make it work, son got to watch a sow and cubs all morning one day and we had a great time. Here are the kids out. So now we had some Coues deer hunts, had a great time I have these last two pictures. I have a buddy that had an Oct. tag but was in NM helping/guiding on a Mulie hunt so he didn't know if he would get to hunt, well he had a couple of days, called me up and I took him to a spot that held good bucks but I didn't realize how good these bucks were. We glassed one up for him and he killed it one shot with my 300 ultra at 812 yards both shoulders, the buck was bigger than I expected. 113 3/8 Went in the next morning and another buddy killed off the same ridge, 650 yards, I didnt' get permission for his picture so I will just post the buck. 111 3/8 So it has been a good year so far.. Got a few more hunts for mulies and then couple of family members have late bull tags and my wife still has December WT in 23 so hopefully a few more pictures to come.
