I posted on another thread that I got hit today after watching since last week. So I too predict another few days.

Just checked for fun. Got a hit today 7/24. Thought it was all over. I'm sure it is for my wife or son but still a tag.

Azkiller no doubt there are local poachers but many of your so called caravans with ar's are not locals at all..

One thing I can tell you. Don't let your wife pick a bow on color. My wife really wanted a pink bow and stupid me figured they would all run about the same (give or take a little ) so I said "sure I'll let you get whatever you want" ( you know trying to be the good husband and all), besides she was buying a bow, this is awesome. She really loves her Mathews Jewel, but man it cost me big time.

yep they are so smooth driving up and down long stretches of dirt road. Suspension is awesome. Haha

If I understand correctly the alternative managment plan in 3c is only on a 3 year plan, after the 3 years they have the option to scrap it or find another unit in the same region. That is why I think 27 or 1 will be the next alternative management unit. G and F had already made plans for 3c before the wallow fire took place.

rifle for a 11 year old girl
WHT_MTNMAN replied to 218buck's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
i would second this, unless you like to wound animals. I am sure there are many out there who would say a .243 is plenty of gun for elk, and that this guy or that guy they know took an elk with a .22-250, etc., etc., etc. Let's talk reality. Kids are not generally crack shooters, so hitting vitals is not necessarily guaranteed. With a .243, you better hit vitals on an elk. If you don't, you may wing 'em enough that they run off and die unrecovered. That is no good. Ethics dictates that you use enough gun for the game, and that you use enough that a good, ethical shot will take the game down and provide a clean kill (yeah ... I know ... you could hit a squirrel with a .338 Win Mag and not kill them every time ... but MOST of the time you would). This includes evaluating the shooter's capabilities. When I was buying for my boys, smallest I looked at was 7-08, which many resources (including one from AZGFD) listed as a dead minimum for cow elk. This year, they were drawn for bull elk (which the 7-08 was not listed for) ... the 7-08's are staying home in favor of a .280AI and a brake'd .30-06. With those, we will have enough energy at "reasonable distances" to provide for a clean kill. My suggestion is to either get a deer gun for now (.243) and forget elk (you could just put in for bonus points for the time being), or get a gun she can grow into and get a good brake installed. Brakes aren't an issue at the range where hearing protection is required, but take ear plugs when you hunt unless you want to learn sign language!!! That is just my two coins worth ... go ahead folks ... let me have it ... I know it's coming ... someone out there loves a .243 for White Rhino and anything smaller ... I started using electronic ear protection, you can take in a quite voice and give directions all the while protecting the shooter. I am a huge fan of the brake, I would put a brake on a 223 if I thought a youngster needed it to shoot better. -
They are finally managing for trophy deer....should be real good in next few years but i bet 1 or 27 will be managed as a trophy unit after this 3 year trial is up.... jmo Some units are managed for quality but most still for quantity..

My wifes buck from last Oct. almost done.

My wife is almost as excited as I am to get it back. Looks pretty good. Clay Goldman is doing the mount. The bobcat does look pretty sweet
-
To me a trophy is good enough to put on the wall...which doesn't take much for me since my wife lets me decorate the house with mounts.

I live and grew up here in Pinedale, right in the middle of the unit and would be happy to show you around and give you some info, I am flexible during the hunting season and often take many days off to help people out. Houston PM me if you want

The "draw" was earlier than before this year. That has passed. There may be leftovers depending on what you want to hunt, but probably will tough to get them.

Not to start a Pi$$ing match but that has to be one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard. The only time Fixed heads "suck" is if 1. The bow is not properly tuned or 2. The shooter has form issues. Whenever I tune my bow, after paper, walk back etc.. I shoot a fixed, mechanical (usually either rage, or T3 ) and a field point. I'm not happy until they all shoot together. Once a bow is tuned, almost any head mechanical or fixed will shoot great. I like G5 striker, montec or Wac em and now I am shooting the VPA's they are awesome. I would love to see someone shoot accurate groups at 80 yards with a fix blade as accurately as i can do with a mechanical. Fix blades take a lot more effort and time to tune to your bow. I personally have my bow paper tuned as well and it helps but they still doesn't compare to the mechanical broadheads. But thats also my opinion. You know just as well as i do, that if you ask 10 different archers one question about something you will get 10 different answers. Thanks for not taking my post as an attack, as it wasn't meant to be, and I agree everyone will have an opinion. Here is mine: I love to shoot broadheads, I shoot them all year around, I like to try and shoot as many brands, styles as I can. I have shot many, many broadheads and agree that mechanicals can be less sensitive to form. BUT for all of MY hunting applications, the difference between my mechanicals and fixed are negligible, out to my max hunting range. Shooting a fixed has two major advantages though. 1. (I like numbering my thoughts) When using a fixed head there is no premature deployment (quiver, or hitting branch or spider clip fail, or rubber band failure etc...) 2. When I practice with my fixed COC, VPA's I then can touch up the edge and hunt with them without having to take them off my arrow to change out blades or to take off the practice tip and re-screw in the hunting bh. Once my solid BH is spin tested, shot then I hunt with my practice tip WITH ABSOLUTELY NO ADJUSTMENTS TO THE ARROW/BROADHEAD except to resharpen and of course that is done without taking it off the arrow. Once thing I believe in is to shoot what you are comfortable with have confidence in, this archery game is mostly mental. One more thing, hitting an elk in the vitals at 60 yards is relativly easy, compared to hitting a coues deer. With an elk I would rather give up a minimal amount of accuracy to have a tougher, fixed head. again my opinion.

My first guess was bear, then when I opened it up and zoomed in, then I saw an Elk on the first picture, probably calf.

My beautiful wife has had some pretty good luck over the years. She shot her first Coues buck a couple years ago on the first morning. And then last year got drawn for mule deer and killed a really good buck right at sunrise on the first morning. We've discussed how it doesn't always happen this way. She also shot her bucks off "the claw" with my 300 RUM, missed the first shot and I took some clicks off my turret and she hammered him through the shoulders. I'm proud of her. I love hunting with my family what a blessing I have to spend time in the woods with them. On a side note, even though I have no ties to "the claw" company, it is a great product, especially for youth and those that may not have tons of experience. her first Coues (i've posted this before) Last years mule deer (her first)

How much snow fell in Payson? To much to find sheds?
WHT_MTNMAN replied to Brian27's topic in Shed Hunting
almost all melted off now. Even up here in Pinedale, we had over a foot and gone in many places, especially in the next day or two. -
Well since I haven't posted for a while, decided to change the forum up a bit and post a couple things. Here is my son's first deer. He got drawn for the youth hunt and made a good one shot kill off of "the claw" and my tripod with my 300 RUM. He was on cloud 9 and I was a proud dad.

Just on that picture, I would guess high 80's super buck for sure.
