I don't post very much on this subject because I know that every year things change and I would hate to advise someone to go to Mexico and heaven forbid something goes wrong, BUT I love going to Mexico, for the most part the people are very happy to see us, they treat us well, they are respectful and we have never had any problems. All that being said it is a relief to finally get across the border and back into Arizona and the US of A. Of all the years I've been going down for deer/Turkey (probably 12 years) the only problems/harassment we have experienced is by our own border patrol/ Federal fish and wildlife. Don't get me wrong, i'm glad that they are trying to keep us as a nation safe and I know most of them just have a job to do, but we have been harassed multiple times on the US side and never on the Mexico side.

Porcupine was a name given to him from guide friends of mine. He wasn't even on anyone's hit list (not too many at least ) since he won't score well, just a unique bull that we hope breeds a cow that has genetics of giant fronts and beams. then maybe his offspring will be shootable. -

I just returned from a great trip to Kodiak. It is my 2nd trip to Kodiak and of course it did not disappoint. 1st rule of Kodiak- Give yourself plenty of time before and after the scheduled hunt for weather delays Thankfully ours was minimal but one group was waiting to fly for 4 days because of weather. 2nd Rule- Bears are no joke. I saw probably over 20 brown bears in 5 days with 7 in one day and a giant 8 1/2 foot sow and her cub at 40 yards. Standing up on her back legs and growling, making lots of noise and staring holes through me. No rifle and no backup gun. Dumb on my part but I was pressing to kill my buck before dark. I made a 48 yard shot on on a bedded buck, he ran 20 yards and tipped over, I held low since he was bedded down and almost missed him. But caught the lower part of his heart. I was by myself in bear country at almost dark. I didn't take to many pictures and hurried out of there. 3rd Rule- Sitka are pretty easy to hunt except the terrain they reside in. Couple of the guys in our group shot bucks at under 10 yards with rifles. Thanks to Jason for setting the trip up and inviting me along. He did all the work I just showed up. We flew into Kodiak on Friday night, Saturday morning the weather was good enough for us to be dropped by charter plane into Larsen Bay. Our Transporter picked us up and we busted it to an area to get hunting that afternoon. Everyone had the opportunity at bucks, but not a lot of real big mature bucks. It rained almost all day everyday with a few broken clouds we capitalized and took a few pictures. I get seasick, I know I do and tried to prepare but still ended up getting seasick toward the end. The boat captain tried real hard to keep the boat calm during the night, which they did. It was dead quiet and calm most every evening. My 2 goals were to take a big buck with my bow and to catch some fish. I only got sick the days I stayed on the boat and tried to fish in the deep water. My buddy killed two bucks with his rifle Quite a few guys caught a bunch of halibut, but I was so sick I wanted to get on land and hunt. could have shot a few solid bucks but nothing bigger than I already had. photo credit of the boat with rainbows to Jason and Tony. My buddies 2nd buck, last day. screen shot from video of a pretty big bear Buddies first buck they are pretty deer. Real heavy hide with lots of fat. I'll try and rotate our salmon limit Lingcod

Welcome- It is a great site, it like everything else has changed over the years, but still a bunch of good people with most of us having a passion for Coues. Jump right in and share some stories and pictures.

After many years of looking at trail cam pics and then live pics and video and then dead critters, I can about 100% guarantee that buck is bigger than 150. I would even go out on a limb and say it is close to 170 but who knows. What is even worse is trying to judge a buck on trail camera in the dark. The darkness takes a lot away

I've used one a few times on strip hunts, etc...sometimes in low teens or single digits. I hate sleeping in warm weather so we would have good bags, place it by the cots and as soon as one of us would wake up get it started. Warm the tent up in less than 15 min enough to get dressed. Same thing in the evening. They heat that space quite quickly -
blah blah blah rub it in Adam is as bad as these Instagram outfitters What a freaking joke it has become. Congrats!!!!

I have absolutely no idea what a guided hunt would even cost. Just for a rough idea. This boat provided all fuel of the boats, getting us to the dry land, food before and after and snacks/sandwiches. All power to dry out gear, no extra fuel charge and we booked the whole boat and it was I think $27500. + our flight to the boat was $250.00 If you use flight miles to AK etc.. you can get flights between $500-1000. Huntinfool had a great write up about it last year or the year before I've heard it is going up and the average is around 3k+ for a boat hunt but I'm not completely sure on that. The absolute biggest difference is that with a float plane they just drop you off. You are on your own for all food, gear, keeping dry etc... And it costs more to fly you to a new area. The greatest thing about the boat was the ability to get completely dry, generators running with heat, boot dryers de humidifiers etc..and a meal already prepared and ready. Doing a drop camp would allow you to get to some better areas IMO but very risky with weather. One group was planning on staying 10 days but had to leave early since there was so much rain and the weather hadn't dropped to freezing and the meat and capes were going bad. We had freezers and fridges on board the boat so no issue. A few groups that I talked to in the airport told me they ended up spending close to 6k on their float plane drop hunt. (all flights, food, gear, shipping etc..) That really surprised me as I figured I could do it way cheaper but that is what they said. I think the only way an outfitted hunt would be worth it is if they had limited access or a concession that was just for them, you may have better quality of animals. Other than that, they are small animals with heavy hides and fat, but easily taken off the hill with 2 guys. Every day we talked with the transporter about weather and what sides of the island and bays etc... he felt he could get us in land safely and we would look at the terrain and see where we wanted to go and head to shore.

Great target buck.! Some of my favorite and definitely rewarding accomplishments are those animals I have found and watched and followed over multiple months, seasons, years etc..and get it all wrapped up at the end. Stud

They are good bucks for sure...i think B&C is 100 and 108" all time...my guess is that the 2 biggest will be somewhere around 105 gross, but I didnt take time to score or anything and for sure didnt care. Pope and Young of course makes book at a much lower #.
-
Are you doing drop camp? Or boat? Or road system. We spent over 2 days in airports waiting on weather so we talked with a bunch of guys all doing it differently, so I have some decent info to share.

Nice buck...ive seen a few great bucks hitting the ground

I did a diy drop camp for Caribou in northern AK and a mtn goat hunt in Kodiak. It was extremely wet and alders are no joke but the mixed bag was the selling point for me. I could have killed all 3 deer but again my goal was to do as much as I can. I even sat on the beach and missed a black (silver tip ) fox. Sure wish I could have a re do on that one.
