Guided Mexico Coues Hunt, how big of a buck should you holdout for?
WHT_MTNMAN replied to DonkeyMan's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Public land in AZ has as good or better quality than 75-80% of Mexico. Unless the ranch you are hunting has a long proven track record, anything over 105" should be seriously considered. Most want to kill 110+ and in the end shoot something under 100". The benefits of Mexico include 1. Limited to no hunting pressure 2. Food 3. Most of the time limited cell service 4. Good friends -
My son has killed a couple mule deer but this year he killed his 1st Coues. Due to his school schedule he wasnt able to scout with me. I scouted 3 different weekends and with it shaping up to be a tough hunt we decided to hunt this buck. I actually figured he was smaller than he is. We were both happy as we walked up to him. We started our hike at 2am and made it to where he was by 6:15. Shot shortly after. Good scouting and a good plan worked out perfectly. Made an absolute perfect shot in front right shoulder/heart at 380yards. Bonus Rams during scouting

Thanks this was last year. I think it was 99 6/8ths. Or 5/8ths. Basically right at 100"

It's a left over tag and one is a 100" buck. So yeah.

It's a rush...I've called a few in..this one I glassed across a small canyon and called him right in. You can see the saliva dripping. Years ago I shot one in the chest with my .45 Kimber at 10-12 feet. Died in 20 seconds. Shot a lion with the same handgun at 6ft Coming out of a tree...Nothing quite like it that I've experienced..

I had my Sony A7iii. And turned it to video mode. 200mm lens at 9ft couldn't back it out any further

WHT_MTNMAN replied to IAMMAC's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Ive been on Kodiak 3 times. 2 for Deer and 1 for Mtn Goat. I have a love/hate relationship with the place. I've always seen bears, every trip and sometimes some real big bears. I've hunted in your hunt area for deer 2 times. I am more than happy to give you some more info if you want. I would recommend a transporter or staying in a FS cabin for sure, tent camping it would be a nightmare IMO. Especially if it rains the whole time. You can not hunt over bait but if there are deer hunters around and gut piles the bears will be there. -
Yes...not a lot you can do without spending lots of time and money. That sucks...I hate thieves of all kinds

I've been on too many backpacking/ Alaska fly in trips to ever enjoy eating freeze dried again. There are a few I can choke down but I really could never eat another one again and be ok... BUT when you are really hungry I can eat almost anything so I still pack them and eat them as needed.

Great shooting! And great story congrats!

2021-22 governor's bear tag
WHT_MTNMAN replied to 218buck's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Most of the big outfits have the person that is getting the "finders fee" a guides license if they don't have one because they usually pay big money. Like minimum $10k, but like you said it is open for interpretation, I guess it depends on what someone is paying. -
2021-22 governor's bear tag
WHT_MTNMAN replied to 218buck's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I'm not an attorney and I'm sure it is open to interpretation but the word game and fish uses is Commensurate. So you only need a guide license if you are getting equivalent value in money or products that a guide charges. So if someone was to get $500 or $1000 bucks that may be totally be legal. -
Oh man that is tough. Thoughts and prayers sent

Upgrade scope from Vortex Viper HS LR
WHT_MTNMAN replied to recurveman's topic in Long Range Shooting
I love mine but I made an expensive Tangent Theta purchase earlier this year and now my daughter is getting married so If you are serious and want a used one, I may be selling. The only downside is that it is a little on the heavy side ( most of the great scopes are) but I love the strength and durability of the scope. Glass is awesome. P.S. nevermind I see you wanted it in MOA mine is MIL -
Got it from my neighbor.

Worth a small fortune. I just picked up a 2010 with 80k miles for 16k and everyone I talked to thinks I could get 22-25k out of it...insane prices right now.
