Hey bigorange, there are no deer on the Fort. That one Archery_Hunter33 shot must of been pushed in be all the drug traffickers coming up from Mexico.
-
Man I cant wait. I drew the Dec hunt but wont start hunting until the 18th of Dec. Love hunting Fort Huachuca.
-
Nice hunts guys. Thanks god for leftover tags. Were you hunting on Fort Huachuca?
-
Hey 5guyshunting, I only counted four of you. Where's the fifth guy? Nice deer. I am also not a fan of long range shooting. Too many amateurs attempting it because it's the THING TO DO. Glad you had a successful hunt.
-
What area did you hunt? I have also been out for several days without harvesting but always enjoyed the solitude.
-
Great hunt. Super nice bull. 3 tags in 4 years. She should be buying Lotto tickets.

I agree Snapshot. Hybrid isn't a back thing to ask. It would be interesting to find out thru genetic testing if cross breeding is going on and in what locations. Who knows, someday the pure (and I use the word pure without knowledge to present day genetics) genetics of mule deer and coues may not exsist. It's interesting knowledge. Not saying someones deer should or should not be recognized as a coues.
-
Great deer Jody. First thing I thought also was looks like a hybrid deer. Didn't want to ask to see the tail. All the Coues experts would criticize. I personally would have a hard time saying Coues before I saw its white flag.

Beautiful fox. That one is a keeper. Perfect full mount. -
Nice deer. So 5guyshunting, how do 5 guys end up with 7 tags???
-
Hey Creed, very nice deer. I hope you didn't take it personally. I was just commenting on how many times I have heard people in this forum say they shot him in his bed. A couple years ago my son took a nice mule deer in 6A. We saw him bedded and watched him for three hours until he stood up only because we also watch coues in the same area. Thanks for the update on how you watched him bed and you did properly identify him first.
-
So Firstcoueswas80, are you saying mule deer and coues whitetail do not overlap terrain. I thought the only positive identification was the tail. Why so quick with the WTF? I'm asking a valid question. AZG&F shows the overlap of mule deer and whitetail everywhere in the state whitetail exist. During AZ Hunter's Education courses we are also taught the importance of identification.

I've been seeing a lot of the "shot him in his bed" remarks and I am not cutting anyone down for it. Just saying are we not suppose to positively identify the game species before we shoot? Excellent buck by the way. I can only dream of one that nice.

Fantastic!!!! When do the calling classes start? Sign me up. Thanks for taking them out. How many yearlings and fawns next year did you save in one morning? -
Very Nice Colorado Bull. I love hunting the Cimarron, Colorado area. Beautiful very high mesas. Deep narrow canyons with water running through them. And you almost always get to hunt with some snow on the ground.

If you have never used Google Earth, learn how to. Using Google Earth and The AZG&F information listed below do some on line scouting. Then go hunt if you can't do pre-season scouting. White-tailed Deer Overview: Since whitetail populations are well distributed throughout the forest, hunters will be equally successful in just about any location in the unit above 4000' elevation. General distribution is moderate at elevation 5000'and up. Since the majority of whitetail habitat is located on lands administered by the US Forest Service, access is very good. A Coronado National Forest map is invaluable on a hunt for detailed access information. The USFS map of the Chiricahua Mountains, Coronado National Forest is available from US Forest Service Offices. Glassing from high points or stalking bring results for hunters. Most sportsmen use a combination of the two methods. The use of binoculars and/or spotting scopes is highly recommended. Area: Work the upper reaches of these drainages of the unit. Starting on the west side of the unit, the following road accesses are recommended: Pinery, Pine, West Turkey, Cottonwood, Stanford, Pridham, John Long, Rucker, and Tex Canyons. On the south: Price, Shake, Jack Wood, and Horseshoe Canyons. East side: Sulphur, Dripping Springs, Fossil, Cave, East Turkey, Silver, East Whitetail, Jhus, Brushy Canyons. Jhus canyon can now be driven into and PLEASE obey all posted signs. The landowner agreed to allow vehicular access to the forest as long as hunters obey all signs. If the landowner discovers any individuals disobeying signs, the access will be cut off. On the north: Wood and Emigrant Canyons. I cannot over emphasize the value of the Coronado National Forest map for finding access. Scouting before the season will help greatly. Access to the west side areas can be gained by using the Willcox exits on I-10 for Highway 186 and then 181. North side locations can be reached by exits at Bowie, San Simon, and Road Forks exits from I-10. Southern portions can be reached on Highway 80, east of Douglas.

I'm with you Dipanddeer, if he passed by me I wouldn't pass on him. He would look nice on a wall.

43F, I feel you were spot on with your advise. All I've seen are excuses from KINGBEER on why he can't do the leg work that MOST of the HUNTERS on this website have put in over the years. Broken Truck, Two Kids. When I started out I had an old Pinto, put my two kids in it and hit the back country. If you love the hunt you get out and do it. And all the other guys that have offered advise is great. This website, with a little imagination and it's search engine is unbelievable for any first time hunter. I have used it for many years. First during the draw you can find out where many of the hunters have drawn tags and what species they drew. Then during the season many of those hunters post success stories and photos. Put the two together and you get a pretty good idea what units to look at. Also, as stated Google Maps and Google Earth are amazing for on line scouting. Topos, Satellite and Terrain maps. Put the three together and you have vegetation, elevation gains, valleys, open parks, water sources, coordinates. Then, like 43F said, put your boots on and take a walk.

Amazing and he looks like he has many more years to go. We all can only hope!!!!

When I lived in Flagstaff was when my son started hunting. I had a gentleman at Silver Bullet Gunsmith put a muzzle break on a Ruger M77 All Weather 30-06. My son was 11 at the time. I remember the first time we shot the gun with the muzzle break. I shot a couple times and was amazed at how smooth it was. My son started shooting it and after emptying a box of 20 rounds he asked if we had more bullets. To this day that is my favorite gun to hunt and target shoot with.

Nice story and photos. Congratulations on a good harvest. That shot placement looks perfect. Way to get her done Sydney.

Transplanted to Arizona...Introduction if you will
m77 replied to BigWaveDave's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
There maybe some leftover tags for whitetail on Fort Huachuca. Call AZG&F and inquire. Ask about Unit 35A Fort Huachuca hunts. Also contact the Sportsmen Center on Fort Huachuca, 520-533-7085. Or Mr. Sheridan Stone, 520-533-7083.
