Thanks Guys, this site is always the best place to go to get straight answers. That's my next question. WHAT CARBONS WOULD YOU ALL RECOMMEND??????

I just finished reading the Outdoor Life article about Jack O'Connor and his love for sheep hunting. It talked about some of his best sheep hunts and also about Jack and his wife's ashes scattered in an area Jack loved to hunt. Many times when I read article like this about Jack and other great hunters I wonder where all their hunting memorobilia has gone to. Fred Bear's bows, Jack's 270, and the mounts of the animals they took with them. I wonder if it would be possible to have a museum, possibly in Phoenix or Tucson, that displays the legendary hunters memorabilia. Any thoughts??? Does something like this already exist beyond Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops??

WOW!!!!! Thanks Bill, sounds like you really know your hunters. Are the autobiographies you've written published and available for purchase? I would enjoy reading them. Maybe instead of a "Museum" we could get some sportsman investors to start a "Hardrock Cafe" style cafe for hunters. Growing up in Wisconsin I remember as a young man, going into bars and restraunts in Northern Wisconsin that were filled with mounts from local hunters. The bars were always packed, not only with mounts but also consumers (customers), as bars in Wisconsin always are. Thanks again Bill for sharing all your knowledge with us. Alan

On the G&F website under draw info it states the 2007 drawing for Elk and Antelope will occur in March with applications due into G&F in January 2007. First I heard of this. Anyone have any more information???????
-
I've always said it would be nice to find out the draw results early in the year than the end of July/beginning of August, but applying in January and getting the results back in March is going to the other extreme. A system were you apply in March/Feb and find out in May/June would have been nice.

My wife just bought me a new Ruger M77 All Weather in a 270 WSM. I have the best wife in the whole world. I am looking for suggestions in a couple areas from the best experts in the field. #1 - Recommendation for scope. And #2 - Recommendation for factory ammo. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Thanks for all the replies. Leupold seems to hold an overwhelming edge to it's competitors. I like the idea of the 4.5 x 14 but I also don't want to overshot my abilities. I feel I would have to do a lot more target practice to reach the range levels associated with a 14 power scope. It'll probably be another 3 x 9 x 40. I'll try working up with lots of range shooting. I also thought of Hornady ammo, but when I visited their website I didn't find 270 WSM ammo available. What kind of ballistics are you guys getting out of your 270 WSMs with factory or reloaded ammo?? Thanks again, Al

SunDevil, I looked at Nikon scopes with the BDC and talked to a sales rep about them. I need to read more about the scope. He stated that they come with tabs that tell you which BDC lines to hold depending on the weight of the bullet. It sounded like a lot of messing around. Maybe target shooting, but not hunting!!!! Thanks SunDevil, Al

Thanks Shortpants. I agree the scope is a personal choice and I also have always bought Leopuld. But I've been stuck on the 3x9s. It's kind of a traditional choice. I was hoping to elicit some non-traditional comments on some of the 4.5 x 14s or others. Also, the federal premiums are an excellent choice. Again, it's the round I shot out of my 30-06. I've read some of the reloader comments in other forums, but I haven't taken the time to learn reloading. Are there other factory loads that will give me superior down range shocking power and flatter tragectory? By the way, where did the name SHORTPANTS come from????? Thanks again, Al

We used TR Taxidermy for my son's muley. He completed the mount in 1999 and it still looks as good today as the day he completed it. Have his phone number with you and call him on your way in. If he's at home he'll meet you at the shop. heck of a nice guy. I watched him do a polar bear in 99. The base looked like real snow and ice. If you get up that way scouting, stop in and take a look at the work he is doing. We used him because a great number of the locals suggested TR Taxidermy. I've made the suggestion in the past that Game $ Fish start the draw with the premium hunts and work down. As a hunter gets drawn in the premium hunts his name is removed from the rest of the draws. All odds go up. Anyone like that idea now that you haven't drawn and some guys have half a dozen tags?????
-
I drew a 35A, 15-30 Dec, Fort Huachuca Whitetail and a 6A, 1-7 Dec, Cow Elk. No Draw Points. Desertsheep, weren't you the one that was so worry that your CC wasn't getting hit??? You may a heck of a draw this year!!!!! Good Luck ALLLLLLLLLLLL, including NON-Residents.

My card continues to show an authorization for $78.00. I know everyone is getting excited over the possiblity of drawing a tag, but until I get it in hand I won't believe it. Hopefully Game and Fish can come up with a better method than what they have been experimenting with over the last several years. Why does Arizona wait until June for the apps and not get the results out until August in the first place?????? It's not like they have to check winter kill for population counts. I think apps due in by 1 April with results on 1 June is not unreasonable. Anyone no why they wait sooooooooooooooo looooooooong?

I just got a temporary authorization for $78.00 on my credit card. Either 6A Bull First choice or 6A cow second choice. My deer tag was a mail in, so I'll have to wait for the results on that. Good Luck Arizona Residents

Would you be in favor of a system that only allows you one tag per year??? Say for X amount of dollars your name goes into the AZ Draw System. If during the draw you are lucky and draw a Bull Elk Tag for the area of your choice (your choices are submitted before the draw) your name would then be removed from the remainder of the draws. You would have your hunt for that season. The following year you again apply for all hunts and zone choices. This year your bull elk hunt is tagged by the draw system as drawing a tag last year and you go to the bottom of the draw for that hunt. But, this year you draw a deer hunt. Again, your only tag for this year. And so on and so forth. Seems like more hunters would get to hunt every year and you would probably draw more often. I haven't run the numbers game to see if this would be true, but it seems like you would.

Took some pictures of a small fork, a doe and an average size 3x3 coming into water at 1230 hours last Sunday. I used a small digital camera and I'll try posting the pictures soon.

Grunt call for Eastern Whitetails
m77 replied to Arizonabowhunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Hi ArizonaBowHunter, I hunted Wisconsin whitetail with my dad since I was 10. Blatting was always my choice. I would setup with the wind in my face from a heavy vegetated bedding area. Place a small amount of doe-in-heat on a white cloth about 30 inches off the ground. Sit back in a windfall tree and make a low gutteral blat with my throat (BAAAAAAAAAA). Once or twice in a row and then wait a half hour. If a bucks hot he'll come. Took my first muzzleloader 8 pointer that way when I was 18. He stuck his nose right on that cloth. 15 yards with a 50 cal thompson I made from a kit. My cousin Joe took one of the biggest buck from that area same way a year later. We hunted a large cedar swamp in the Kewaunee Wisconsin area. An old timer I use to shot archery with taught me the blatting sound. Never bothered to buy a call since. I gotta admit that I have messed up trying that a few times. If your throats to wet you get a sweaking sound and no deer. Best way to practice is to dring a little coke first, then try making the sound. I think the calls are all about the same also. I believe the clincher is adding the doe-in-heat. -
There are a lot of interesting discussions on this site, mostly dealing with all of our favorite sport of hunting whitetail. For this devasting of news to happen, especially this early in the season, I feel will make this hunting season continually get worse. Hunters will become extremely quick with the trigger as this news spreads throughout Arizona. Confrontations will end with deaths. We all need to keep our cool and avoid danger. Have a CELL PHONE with you at all times. I have had success getting a signal through most of the areas in southern arizona that I've been in. AZ4Life is correct when he states that our government is NOT doing enough to stop illegal immigration. I am originally from Wisconsin and I never had to worry about illegals or smugglers while hunting, camping, fishing..........in the great outdoors, WHY SHOULD THE AMERICAN CITIZENS OF ARIZONA EXPECT ANY THING LESS????? Is it not the governor of this states job to pressure Washington? A letter of e-mail from everyone of us will help, but it has to be organized. We need a strong lobby group. If the illegals were killing animals you can bet PETA would be heard in Washington. If it was a hunter killing an illegal you can bet another special interest group would be jumping up and screaming. Why can JOE AMERICAN, the guy that works and keeps this country running ever be heard and acted upon???? Ernesto maybe right in saying the we don't know for a fact that illegals murdered this hunter, but the fact is that illegal immigration is the NUMBER ONE problem facing southern arizona and very little success is being done to stop it. And the list of problems stemming from illegal immigration are endless. Your comments back are what strengthen this site. Thanks, Alan
