BB, if you want some Bergers, let me know which ones you want. As my daily commute is well over 100 miles round trip, I can hit up several places throughout the week and can snag you a box or two. I've seen the 185 vld's within the last week or two.

I love my stainless tumbler. I read somewhere before I leaped into this that hot water gets it cleaner. Not sure if that's true or not, as I've yet to run it with cold water. I can tell you not to put too much lemishine in there, can leave a film on the brass. The biggest problem for me is figuring out a better way to dry. I saw a nice peg board someone made that I think I might try, but too many other projects right now so the oven is the way I go.

AZP, Last year a buddy and I did this same thing, we had a good time. Neither of us tagged out, but the experience was awesome. It makes a heck of a difference having that 2nd person to split costs with, as well as camp chores and someone to talk to for 2 weeks. What unit are you heading to? As I drew a tag here this year, he is going back this year by himself. I believe for the last two weeks. PM me your number and I can get it to him. Mr Smith, Last year it worked out to about $1300 total for each of us, but that was for a two week hunt + travel time. We also managed a scouting trip about 5 weeks before the season, which was beneficial, and that was quite an affordable trip save for used replacement tires from two flats. He ended up getting a new set of tires before our trip, and no other issues while we were there. Truck was an F150, loaded to the hilt. We also had a bit set aside to do some fishing and maybe stop at moab or arches on the way back if we tagged out early.

I'm out and about throughout the week. If there is particular load you are looking for, I can snag it up if I find it and ship it to you. -
The deer herd in the Gunnison basin was hit hard my last winter there(07-08). I've heard anywhere from 40% to 70%+ winter kill, which is a dang shame. Who knows how long it will take to recover. I doubt it ever will, fully at least. You won't find leftover buck tags, but maybe some doe tags. As for the elk hunting in 55, I would suggest spending some time on the CPW website. There is a ton of information to look at there. You may want to check into the areas around Mirror lake, Spring creek reservoir, Fossil Ridge, the treeline above upper taylor river and italian creek, and of course the wilderness areas. If no snow is pushing them down, and you are not finding elk, break out the topo maps and find the steepest, nastiest, thickest dark timber you can find on north/northeast facing slopes. The elk will be there, they always are. If you get an elk down in a rough area, make sure to check out the Gunnison times, as there is always an ad or two during season for college kids willing to trade some leg work for meat. I can't think of a better way to spend a week or two in the fall with your son. If you go, make sure to grab a small game license as the area is full of blue grouse and ptarmigan, not to mention those annoying squirrels. And while you're at it, don't forget the fishing poles either. The Gunnison basin has some of the best fishing in the country, which is why I moved there. And depending on when you go, you could also get some potato sacks full of spawning salmon from Roaring Judy fish hatchery. I'm not sure which season you are hunting, but if you can manage some time on either or both ends of your hunt, I would suggest you do so. If your son has on ounce of love for the outdoors in him, he will love every minute of it. Feel free to PM me with any other questions you got.

Heat, I like Kifaru(don't own yet), but cannot say much for the other brands you inquired about. I have and still use an old 10x12 wall tent made in the 70's, believe it is either a Montana or Davis. I too was worried about the possibility of flying embers, but an inline spark arrestor took care of that. For me, it is a car camping only tent, though if I had horses that would change. I can squeeze in 4 small cots without the stove, two XL cots with. And it gets down right HOT inside if you are not paying attention. I actually put my cot right in front of the door as it gets me the furthest away from the stove(in back corner) and I can let a bit of cold air in if I get too warm. I would suggest getting a larger size, either 12x or 14x. Mine has a window in the back which helps greatly with airflow, but I would suggest getting one with a screen at the door if possible. You will appreciate it in the warm weather here. As for flooring, I use a tarp with a cutout for the stove. When I was in Colorado, I used a piece of carpet for the floor, it helped with the mud and snow. Don't forget a doormat. I've used my tent on solo hunts(perfect size for solo hunts, btw) in january for Javi and deer, and while it is not the easiest thing in the world to set up by yourself, it's not all that difficult either. Try it a few times in your backyard and you'll quickly figure out how to set it up on your own. I doubt anyone could go wrong in buying a quality, US built, marine grade canvas wall tent. The only regret you may have in purchasing one is not getting one big enough. Also, sounds like you may need a 2nd tent to meet the portability that you are seeking.

Using 2-way radios while hunting. Legal, ethical or what?

Using 2-way radios while hunting. Legal, ethical or what?
metau replied to Whitesheep's topic in The Campfire
When I first started hunting in Colorado, it seemed like I ran into game wardens about every other month. For some reason, it usually seemed to be right after I was done reading a portion of the hunting regs. For no particular reason, other then being a smart ***, I almost always asked the official something regarding anything obscure that I'd read. Only thrice did any of them accurately respond to my inquiries. And one of those was a rule change after the regs were printed, and she had a notice with her to inform others, which she read it from. Don't always believe what they say they know, but don't be dumb about it either. I've always respectfully informed them of what I 'thought' was the right/legal thing, saying I 'think' it is in the regs, and have asked them to show me where it states what they have said. Not everything is always there, and more then once, so we both would know, they actually called into the office to have someone there lookup in the revised statutes. Both of us were wrong on a few of those. As for the OP's question, I have been unable to find anything in the regs or statute that specifically prohibit the use of radios. However, do keep in mind that if directions towards an animal are given over the radio, and you then move towards that animal(or it's direction) in a vehicle, you would be in violation of A.R.S. 17-301( per the definition of 'Take' in A.R.S. 17-101(A)18, as well as possibly R12-4-320(A), depending on the verbiage used in the radio transmission, your actions and the interpretation of the officer who witnesses the act. So as long as you never enter a vehicle once you used the radio for locating game, and use the radio in accordance with FCC regulations, I cannot see any legal authority citing you for the use of the radios in your hunt. -
She is fitting in just fine Roger. Even pointed a bunch of quail today in the yard when introducing her to the neighbors. Her and Dakota had a fun afternoon. Thanks bud.

I'm planning to get an upper for varmint/predator hunting. I've been looking online at some of the options out there and wanted to see what some of you had to say. What about your current setup do you love and what would you like to change? Thanks.

Inciweb stated 7,000 acres as of this mornings briefing, with expected 20mph winds today. Type 1 IMT was supposed to be on site today as well. Not sure where it is at this afternoon, but I doubt it's gotten smaller.

Gear: Very true. And the less something weighs, the more expensive it gets.... & quickly too! There are several questions you need to ask yourself. Do you plan on going solo, w/a partner or as a small group? Do you want to pack in a spike camp, or carry camp with you each day? What will the elevation/weather be like where/when you hunt? What's the max duration you would want to be in the backcountry? As this can be quite an investment gear/cost wise, do you plan on or want the option to hunt in other states or out of the country? Are you looking to outfit yourself by the start of this season, or planning ahead a year or two? What is your budget? What gear do you have already? While much of the gear is easily interchangeable, there are several things, some costly, that would/could change depending on some of your answers. Take stoves for example. A small titanium pot/cup with some heat tabs is about the lightest you can go for a solo set up, with a jetboil my preferred choice when cooking for two. If you plan on hunting in very cold weather, with a group, or out of country, then the whisperlite(or international model) would be your best option. And of course do not forget about a small cooking fire, if you don't mind smelling like one while hunting. While any of these would/could work in any of the other situations, they are each uniquely suited to perform best in certain situations. Now with all that said, you do not need a 2nd mortgage to do this. If you are starting with nothing other than your current hunting gear, you could get into the backcountry for a 4 day hunt for about a $100. While it would likely be an enjoyable time, I doubt comfort would be a word you would ever associate with it. On the flip side, you could spend 100 times that, with too much comfort. It all depends on what you want to do, how much weight you want to carry and of course, and how much you want to spend. The difference between a 60lb pack w/o rifle and a 40lb pack w/rifle for a two week hunt is HUGE, both to your back & your wallet. Method: My method's do not alter drastically from day trip, walk in hunting. Do all your preseason scouting, starting with maps and phone calls to the WM. Then a trip or two in looking for sign. This is a great time to locate water sources and stash water if need be. Once you have your area selected, things are quite similar to how you hunt now, just your camp is smaller. Mistakes: I've had many over the years. Relying on inferior gear to get you through the toughest of times. Purchasing the wrong upgrade, weight wise. Packing too much. Packing too little. Not refilling my consumables(spices, matches, TP) before a trip. I know there's a bunch more, but it's getting late for me. Feel free to ask me any questions you have in regards to backpack hunting. There's still a lot I don't know, but I'll answer anything I can. Jerry

East Valley Gunsmith - shotgun won't cycle
metau replied to kidso's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Had the same problem with a similar savage made shotgun I picked up at the gun buy back a few weeks ago. I was able to free up the action by removing the trigger assembly and buttstock and sliding everything out the end of the receiver. Ended up finding the obstruction and was able to get it cycling again. -
All pm's replied to. Sold items removed. Was a pleasure meeting you guys.

Exactly what I have been looking to do. Subsonic and suppressed is an awesome combo!
