I messed up my wife's application! Need help in 36A
metau replied to Big Browns's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
If you really wanted to say thanks to him, and sorry to your wife, you could get her a sweet 6.5-06..... Just sayin' -
I know there's 13 bulls in that photo, but for the life of me I can't find the last one. I think he moved behind the tree in the middle when I took the photo.

Got home late and didn't take a pic till this morning. Here you go.
-
Should have put in for one. After all, nothing in the regs says you have to use a rifle...

Midwayusa has demo and refurbished 8.5x42 Swarovision EL's on sale for $1730 with free shipping. Seems like a decent price for those looking. A bunch of other demo/refurb's on sale too.

If the ammo is actually HST's and not Hydrashock's I'd like to buy them if you want to split it up. Thanks.

Is the clearance needed for each person, vehicle or party?
-
Exactly. For intended uses (50 shots a year once load work is done), I'd go with the biggest, baddest round he could. 26 Nosler, 6.5stw, 6.5 Allen Mag or 6.5-300wby. If he wants to open his bolt face or get a new PTG bolt he can always go with a 6.5-338 Lapua. The OP may want to spend some time searching around on the LRH forums as there are tons of topics concerning these calibers over there. The Nosler and STW should be fairly close in speeds, with the wby 50-100 fps faster, the AM 200 fps faster and the Lapua 300-400 fps faster. He can get custom dies from Redding if he'd like, and brass to fireform for any of the calibers listed form multiple sources.

So two more days of lost productivity at work, great...

So.....what's the easiest way to find out if you drew a leftover tag? Just spam refresh your portal account at 9am on Monday or what?
-
When I get home. Working today. Here's a stock photo off the interwebs.
-
Sounds like you know where to go in January with your rifle.
-
I put in for the 32 tag as my first choice for a leftover. If I'm lucky, I plan on spending 4 days several hours away from any vehicles. Trying to sort through all the access issues though as that will determine where I start my trek from.

I know they're not deer, but since we're doing easy pics, here's another for you all.

Never had a major shoulder injury, so I'll let others speak to that. The two guys I know that have had issues used the same type of bands Flatlander mentioned(not sure on what exercises though), and both picked up youth bows to start shooting at much lower draw weights before getting back into their normal rigs. When I lived in the east valley, Archery HQ is where I went. Shot the dart league there one season, had a good time. For outdoor ranges, there is one at Usery Park (fee to enter, and across the hwy from the shooting range) and one at Papago. I used the one at Papago extensively as it was on the way home and there was hardly anyone else ever there. I remember haering several years ago that there was an archery range built at a park in either Chandler or Gilbert, but I've never been there so cannot comment. Of course, there's always your backyard if it's big enough. Once you get up and shooting, let me know and we can go chase some Coues not far from your house.

I'm getting excited for Dove season!!!!
metau replied to Big Browns's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Not sure if the dove hunting down near Yuma is what it was 20 years ago. If it's anything close to it you need to experience it at least once. -
Think your tag is a bit early for the rut. Your best source for info on the Coues deer rut is this site. Spend a few hours using the search function (or target this site in a Google search for shorter words) and you will find a plethora of useful information. From folks I know back east, eastern whitetails start rutting anywhere from Halloween to the first week of December, depending on what part of the US or Canada you're in. Coues deer start anywhere from middle of December to first part of February, depending upon location within US or Mexico. I was down in the 36's in mid January and saw some rutting action, but it was from smaller bucks. Pretty sure I was a week early for where I was at. If you really want to hunt rutting Coues, then you need to get a bow.

Per the current fire restrictions, the Tonto NF is currently closed to the discharge of a firearm unless lawfully hunting.

I won't get into the parenting aspect of it as I do not have kids of my own yet, but as a hunting mentor to your son, you would not be doing your part by passing on an opportunity to get him out there hunting. There's good quail in that unit. Might as well get the tag and spend the first 40 days of quail season scouting for deer with a shotgun over your dogs. Learn a new area for deer and a new area for quail. Win/Win for you, your son and the dogs. Besides, you can never have too many hunts. This is my last weekend until at least Feb 4th (except Christmas Day and our anniversary) that's not booked with some type of hunting/fishing/scouting/helping and I'm still looking for more hunting/helping opportunities. If you're more familiar with some of the other units, put him in for those too. No need to restrict him to just the youth hunt in 20C. Also, no need to limit him to 150 yards. Just get him a lot more trigger time and let his performance at the range determine what his max range is, accounting for variances between range shooting and game shooting, of course.

Looks like this will be the first time I'll make the opener of dove season since I was a much, much younger. Planning on heading down to Yuma, where I went on my first dove hunt as a kid, and letting my wife shoot her first dove. Will help get the dogs ready for quail season and can scout for pheasant all in the same trip, not to mention getting some rolled tacos from chili pepper's. -
I'll be free on Sunday if it still needs fixed. Maybe Saturday, but pretty sure I'll be working.

Used two of their predecessor, the PEQ-2A, extensively over in the sandbox. If you're going to hunt at night with NVD's, then yes, it's possibly a good fit for that. As for the laser for home defense, can't say either way for you. Personally, I would not use one. My eye sight in the dark is better than most, and any sort of light makes me loose my peripheral vision. I'd much rather have a weapon mounted light and an RDO. You can blind them with the initial blast from the weapon light as you pick up the target in the RDO, giving you enough time to identify the target and confirm threat status before twitching your booger flicker. Besides, if you train like we all should, at the distances involved inside most of our homes, reflexive aiming is more than sufficient to neutralize any threat. The need for the precision afforded by the laser at those distances is not a necessity for most home defense scenarios. If you have not already, I would also suggest analyzing your platform, caliber and bullet selection based on residential location, proximity to neighbors, house construction, floor plan, likely ingress and egress routes and location/elevation of normally occupied beds. The only thing worse than dealing with the hassle of shooting a home invader is dealing with what happens if you hit someone else due to a miss or over penetration.

I always use USPS MO's, never checks. Had an old bank freeze my account many years ago due to an errant court order that took me a few months to straighten out. Always used USPS MO's since. AZFD will cash the entire MO and if you are not drawn, will issue you a state check for your refund(minus app fee, of course).

No, it was his 2nd choice. Talked to his dad at lunch and they are going to discuss picking up a pig tag tonight.
