    30-06 for coues

i use 168's mainly. 165 too. but any from 150 to 180 would be fine. depends on how far you are shooting and how well your rifle shoots that load.

    What grain for 30-06?

the original question asked about a 30-06. not sure why any one is mentioning a .270 . i do not see a any difference between the 7/08 ... both according to hornady shoot a 140 at 2940 fps. having shot in competition out to 1000 yards , 600 yards with a 30-06, my experience ( actually seeing others) with factory sporter weight rifles is they have a real hard time achieving the precision at 500 yards and more.

    What grain for 30-06?

I would shoot the weight that shoots the best groups at 500 yards with your rifle. I use a 165, 167 and 168, usually in my 30-06s.

    Need advice

make sure the rifle closely fits his size. i would get a .243 and start with lighter loads with lighter bullets. like a 60 grain bullet at 3000 fps.
  9. caliber? what barrel are you putting on it?
  10. the regs are online. get a small game or predator permit for the scouting days.

Where to start on a budget

Cody- once you get your rifle/rifles going you can shoot them in matches around the valley .. if you go to http://www.desertsharpshooters.com/ and go to the calendar. real good way to determine how your rifle/ammo does. ron

Where to start on a budget

my brother shot his newly rebarreled 700's last week. a .264 and a 300 . none of the groups were over .5

Where to start on a budget

i would get a rem 700 long range 7mm mag, mount a vortex 6-20x44 scope; burris z rings and get some ammo and shoot. then i would save for a krieger barrel, shilen or timney trigger; and reloading equipment. whether you go the savage or remington path there is a learning curve. stomp says practice and factory ammo will deplete the budget fast.

Where to start on a budget

do you have someone to reload for you? finding an accurate load with factory ammo in a factory gun $$$. your best bet is either a Remington sendero or rem 700 long range. weight helps for long range shooting.

    7mm or .308?

wondering where the OP went ? i used a 30-06 to harvest a wolf. i use a 7mm often too. K. Adams chooses a 7mm for long range. according to the article he has 5 red ones . i think hs has shown the 7mm works well also. ... .. .. http://www.accurateshooter.com/competition/f-open-champ-kenny-adams-7mm-rsaum/
  23. use all the same brass in the same gun use brass from the same brand , nosler if you have it. lapua does not make .270 brass . use a match primer like a br-2 or a 210m. lightly chamfer the case mouths inside and out after resizing.
  24. what scope on the .270S? by using a hornady comparator a .270 modified casing and a dial caliper , you can determine how far to the lands. or you can seat bullets out colored with a sharpie until you can see land marks on the bullet . then seat them .030 off.
