Loading and shooting in a monthly F-class match where you shoot 66 rounds at 500 or 600 yards allows you to shoot enough to gain some experience with different powders., and increases your shooting skill. For hunting, most do not shoot enough to achieve that. With so many powders to choose from now ; i usually start with "an extreme " powder that is not as temp sensitive when starting to load a new rifle / cartridge. Quite a few on 24hourcampfire have a 280 ai . If whatever you are using for ammo worked to harvest a 208" mule deer i would say it is working exceptionally well. ron

Coues With Big Heavy Bullets
roninflag replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Flat - yes. i generally lean to lighter, faster, flatter bullets to 500-600 yards. first coues- i shot some 180's out of my unbraked laredo. too much kick for me. 168's have worked well for me. . the 140's i am still working on to get groups a little better, but once i get there look out coues and wolves. ron -
thought i was the one always shooting the smallest coues every year. i use a rifle though. ron

Coues With Big Heavy Bullets
roninflag replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
apparently very few scenar shooters here. i shot literally 1000s in paper. i used a 167 in my 30-06 on two arctic wolves. excellent. one of the wolves for sure heavier than a coues. too bad they do not make a 100 grain scenar to use in your .257. they do make a 90 that would be awesome in a .240 . i feel the bullet for coues in 7mm is the 140 berger. or ballistic silver tip, i like lighter out to 500-600 yards. i have no experience but i would lean toward a 100 grain in the 257 weatherby or even an 87. -
small compared to the avatar. big compared to mine.

Century Centurion P-14 7MM Rem Mag
roninflag replied to Cazador's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
barrel quality and a precision action, good trigger and many things determine a rifles accuracy potential. . rem 40x 7mm mag were made in a slow twist. they are very accurate rifles. since lighter bullets are better for coues in that they recoil less and are faster and flatter and have less wind drift out to 500 yards. you are fine . get several different brands of ammo with bullets 140 grains or less.- 10 replies
