    crossbow for wife

Since it is for the wife the price is not an issue. I would gladly spend top dollar to get her back in the field with me. Of course, if a very good one could be had for less......lol I appreciate the feedback so far. The internet is full of information but first hand knowledge from local guys is ALWAYS better. Any of the local shops carry an assortment? I just checked Timber Mesa and they do not.

ghetto ( metro pig ) buster

Well done. It's nice when you don't have to hike all over creation for a stink pig.

That is cool. She should be thrilled.
  4. Was up in 6b helping a young friend on his very first elk hunt (never even SEEN an elk before). Shot a cow at about 10 this morning. Felt it was a good hit but wasn't sure. Found her tracks and located a few speckles of blood. Followed the tracks for awhile with limited to no blood. After about 2 miles(yes 2 miles) blood speckles stopped, but I was still able to follow the tracks. After another mile and a half we lost the tracks over rocky outcropping up a very steep hill. searched a bit and picked them back up on the other side of the mountain. A couple hundred yards down the other side I found her. 3.6 mile track and recovery. just over 3 hours. Now the crazy part. He shot her perfect with a 168gr 308 Winchester(store bought). Double lung. The bullet never expanded. It was crazy. Crazy.

What is the farthest you have tracked an animal?

Yes he was. The whole time we thought he made a bad shot, but he aced it. The guy with the two kids gave me a ride back after I found her. I was beat and really appreciated it. Do you know if they were successful? They were nice guys.

    6b road conditions help

I have never stepped foot in 6b and agreed to help a young friend with his December cow hunt. For you 6b guys, how are the roads? Can I get my trailer in there or should I plan on leaving it at home? I think he plans on taking the 535 in past the power line and camping back off the 538 somewhere. Any help is appreciated.

Reload or Not to Reload-Choose Wisely

Oh man I have a friend that is one of "those guys". Has his primers in a mason jar handed down by his dad. Talks about the weight of powder in "grams" and buys whatever powder he can find or is recommended by the kid behind the counter. Has no idea about ANY of the intricacies of reloading. Just fills up the case and goes shooting. Scary. REALLY scary.

    Cold weather gloves?

Silk liner with fold back mittens. Can control the temp of your hands and never have exposed skin.

    Backpack- advice?

Are you looking for "best" are really good but affordable? Since you don't carry much, I would recommend just getting a high quality frame and throwing a small day pack on it. Much cheaper option than a full blown pack. Lighter as well.

Wanting to learn to tan hides

I tan my own, but am far from an expert. What I have found is that there is really no "right" way to do it. My "method" combines several different methods that you can find online. I do not user a kit. This is the basic "guide" I follow with a few variables. I use the salt and alum method. I also use Rittels safety acid. I have used citric acid with very good results, but it is more expensive and more labor intensive. I use the solution method and not the paste. http://www.uaex.edu/environment-nature/wildlife/youth-education/TR%20Tanning%20deer%20hide%20AZ.pdf

    Hunting with muzzle brake?

I wear one of the orange plastic ones around my beck the whole time. I don't even notice it is there but can put it on in just a couple of seconds.
