Got my 1st archery bull tag. Need equipment advice
AzDiamondHeat replied to DUG's topic in Elk Hunting
One of my favorite things during elk season is when the storms roll in. Find a nice thick stand of trees to sit under and stay dry while it rains and get ready for some awesome activity when the heavy stuff lets up. So many guys stay in camp or head back when it gets rainy. Waterproof boots and pants or gaiters are a MUST. -
master of the estrus buzz....

Agree with cj on YouTube. Also look up elk101 and elknut's training stuff. All good stuff. I tried for YEARS and couldn't do it. Gag reflex didn't help. Then I on a whim I started trimming my reeds and viola, I found it. Now it is almost second nature. Anytime you are in the area hit me up and I would be happy to show you what I do with my reeds. Might just be the shape of your palette keeping you from the magic. Lol

Digiscoping newbie questions

Spotters work very well but as WHT just said, you need an adapter to hold it steady and to be able to focus. It is also VERY easy to make your own from an old phone holster and a cheap scope cap. -
My tikka doesn't shoot worth a darn... But then none of my other rifles do either. I just keep picking lemons I guess. lol Love my tikka though.

HAHAHAa I was going to say the same thing. I have little desire to carry my bed and shelter when I have my trailer. lol -
Pretty soon there will be outfits that find the animals for you, set up your blind, give you a place to sleep and eat and then drive you out to the blind in the morning and drop you off...

Ruining your rep Flatlander.....lol Well done man.

I have that elk on a stick decoy. I used it last year helping a buddy on his hunt. Can't say it helped, but definitely never spooked one off. Mostly I just did it for something new to try. I actually thought it was kind of fun messing with it. Might try some more this year.

Interested in the powder drop and cabelas tumbler.

I agree with kaz. Elk love the hoochie mama because they know to run away fast. I carry several different reed calls as well as several diaphragm calls. You never know what they will want to hear. You can use just about any of the QUALITY cow calls effectively. Custom calls are even better because they do not sound like everyone else out in the woods. More importantly than WHICH call to use, is knowing HOW and WHEN to use it. If you are just going to go blow on it randomly, you might as well get a hoochie mama. Just pick one to start. Learn to use it and practice. And practice. Then practice some more. There are some very good learning cd/dvds out there. Watch a lot of youtube and LISTEN. Nothing worse than a bunch of dudes out in the woods blowing kazoos pretending to elk hunt.

I apologize -
you guys are breaking all the cool guy rules by posting units! SHAAAAAAAAAME...... Now EVERYONE will FLOOD those units and RUIN them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
It is really easy to transfer form earth to garmin via the aforementioned .gdb file and also from garmin to Earth. I do them both all the time. It is then a snap to go from basecamp to your unit.
-
No worries. You got 4 more fingers. Its an ELK TAG!!!!!!!!

I'm looking for a good elk guide. Does anyone have a recommendation?

We have all done dumb things in our lives that could have killed us or our friends. Fortunately, cell phones and the internet were not around back then to document and share our attempts at earning a Darwin award. Anyone want to have a bb gun war?..... With that said, I do think what he did was reckless. If it was some no-name hillbilly I wonder if there would be as much discussion or simply a passing comment about winning stupid awards. As a parent, I think it was stupid given that he IS a "role model" for some. As a dude, I thought it was...welll...a dude thing.

Love me some pond bass.
