Yeah, me too! I saw more elk on that trip than javelina, if you can believe that...Good luck on your hunts.

Check out DuWayne Adams literature on glassing available on this website. I went to a seminar of his back in the early 90's and still use his methods. This usually works for me, (others may have some opinion), but when I find a good spot to start glassing, I always start my session by looking at the habitat closest to me, then expanding my areas. That way, if I spooked any deer setting up, they hopefully will still be within rifle range (or a closer stalk). I've also found several nice bucks running the very tops of ridges, and actually "skylining" themselves, early in the AM and late in the PM.

I hunted this unit for javelina last year and saw several Coues (nothing too big), a mountain lion, and even some elk around the Table Mesa area off the Bumble Bee Road.

Getting my Feet Muddy

Hillbilly... Since you are getting out there and don't seem to mind putting some miles on your Jeep, look in the northern part of the unit at the Mustang Mountains. I've never seen an IA (illegal alien) there, but I have seen Coues bucks worthy of shooting! Just don't walk too much, other than to a spot to glass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
i have seen the mountain top

What about West of the Pecos gun shop in Tucson? I know it's not very big and very cluttered but the manager is a Coues hunter!! -
I too, drew this hunt several years ago because ANY Coues hunt is better than no hunt! I hunted several steep, rough canyons on the West side of the Dragoon Mountains in the northern part of the unit. I saw several does, but no bucks. I did however, hike past two hunters packing out a smaller 2x3 from one of these canyons. Two co-workers of mine also drew this hunt (as a second choice if you can believe that!) and may scout a little before their Nov. hunt. If they come up with anything, I will pass it along.

OK, I've checked the website and got in touch with someone who has shot Coues in this area. I know what you mean about GENERAL areas on the website. They provide a good place to start, but everyone and their dog is starting there too. Once I have some better areas I will again inquire from members as to other places. Thanks.

I've shot 2 Coues with my Browning 30-06 using 150gr Federal Nosler Ballistic Tips...one at 199 yards (thank God for rangefinders!) and one at 100 yards. Both fell with one shot and had minimal meat damage. These bullets are accurate out to 400 from my gun, but I've yet to harvest a Coues at that range.

Greetings, I drew my 2nd choice December WT in 24b. Would anyone like to give me some places to scout/hunt??? I've never hunted there, but have been hunting Coues since '88. This is my first Dec. tag, ever. Thanks for the help.

I've been on successful gun hunts in Carr, Ash, and Miller Canyons on the east side of the Huachucas. I've been on unsuccessful archery hunts, but have always seen lots of deer, in Hunter and Ramsey Canyon (watch the private land in Ramsey though.) also in the Huachucas. Shoot the first decent buck you can on the early hunt in this unit!
