Sandia Peak. 10,300'

In 1991 I was hunting in New River with two friends on the Halloween Mule Deer hunt. We hunted the first few days and they left on Sunday. Monday morning it got really windy and I out on the flats not far from a trik tank hunched down eating a candy bar when a couple of yards away I saw two bucks high tailing it away. I spit out that half chewed candy bar (Snickers) and hauled but toward the Mesa knowing they would drop down in the draw below it then head uphill in typical Mule Deer fashion. Well I made it a couple of hundred yards and saw them running across the the face of the hill about 50 yards from the top of Table Mesa. I pulled up and put the crosshairs on the front of his shoulder and let it fly. My first shot hit the lead buck just behind the shoulder at about 300 yards. He ran maybe 30 yards and turned headed up to the top of the hill but it bluffed out. When he stopped and turned around facing me I put the crosshairs on his chest and squeezed on off. When the bullet hit he jumped forward and disappeared. It took me an hour to climb up to him. The second shot went into his chest, took off the tip of his Johnson and broke the right femur. I took the skull cap and boned him out. I sat there and took off my boots and laid out my socks so they would dry out then hiked the 1/2 mile non-stop back to the truck. I was 39 at the time and in top shape. Savage 110, Tasco "World Class Scope with "Coated Optics" and Barnes 120gr X Bullet handloads at about 3400fps. It seems everytime I kill something I'm solo.

That 87 is $2800 too much. On a good day and that's being generous.

Way better than anything you can buy in the store.

Right On Harley. Glad it all came together.

I went Thursday about 11:00. Wasn't bad. Lot's of sales people asking if I needed help or wanted to see anything. I imagine there will be less of them in six months. At 250K Sq' it's 50% larger than Bass Pro. At least it's well lit. Prices were about list. The "New" will wear off in about three months.

Got a link to back up that rant?

Good luck to your Clan.

Beautiful Bear. Congratulations.

2X3 possibly 3 1/2 - 4 years old. It will put on some weight but I don't see that rack getting more points.

I can have a satisfying hunt without killing something. I have passed on deer and elk in hopes of killing one with a bigger rack.

Sexy.

Well some people walk right by nature and never see things like a wasp running around on the ground sniffing out a spider or see a Falcon jumping from branch trying to catch a Red Squirrel that is having a conniption fit.

Awesome. I have a love hate relationship with the Kaibab (cold).

Eli I agree. That's all part of preparation and enduring the days and hours of the hunt. I do probably 80% of my hunts solo. I go where I want to go and follow my hunches and only have myself to get me out of situations. I hunt because I like the stalk and the kill. The meat is a bonus but I hunt to pull the trigger and see stuff die and get the meat. Every step I take I see something I have never seen before and will never see again.

Tim, Do you know a smith you would trust to fix the timing?

To me, having a successful hunt is the result of killing the target species. After all it is a hunt. Should I not kill then I was unsuccessful. Just like a car race. You either won or you lost. Don't confuse Successful with Eventful.

Great little case trimmer.

PRDATR replied to Western Hunter's topic in Western Hunter and Elk Hunter Magazine
The AZ Elk hunt was excellent, very well produced.
