Dove Hunting
PRDATR replied to azheadhunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I usually see a few of them too and keep a few #6's handy for them. -
10x50 or 8.5x42 would be my first choice. Anything over 10X and you will need a tripod to keep them steady. Anything smaller than 42mm isn't going to let in enough light during twilight hours.

Which 7.62x54R should I stick with?
PRDATR replied to Scooter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The shooting high and to the right with a different grain bullet isn't anything to be concerned about. The rifle probably has a right hand twist. I would shoot whichever is the more accurate as both are more than enough for Coues. -
August 10th and 11th.

Maybe we should start another topic for them (as if there aren't enough already) and throw in a page of sticky's.

I have carried them out after gutting them and boned them out too. Just depends on how far I have to go and the terrain as I almost always am hunting alone when I actually get a deer down. Here is something which I found to be of interest if you have time to read through it. http://www.wyomingextension.org/agpubs/pubs/B594R.pdf http://extension.oregonstate.edu/lane/sites/default/files/documents/pnw517.pdf http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/natres/06504.html The Maricopa Skill Center also offers game processing but call before the hunt so you know how to bring it to them. A year or so ago some guy brought them a whole elk that wasn't field dressed first and was turned away. http://www.maricopaskillcenter.com/meat-cutting-0

As WW said altitude can be a killer. Go see the Doc and get a clean bill of health especially if you are over 40 and don't exercise. Drink lots of water in te higher altitude to help flush the CO2 out of your body. One of my sisters is a Cardiac Nurse Practitioner in Colorado Springs and hunting season usually means a few guys showing up feeling crappy after or during a hunt. Last year a 53yo guy came in to the hospital where she works a day or two a week and never left. Even worse was that his wife and teenage kid where there when he went into arrest. One thing is certain, we are all going to die. I'd just like to enjoy the ride as long as I can.

I have never seen one before but for the price I don't see why you just would't but a nice tent and save yourself a bunch of cash.

Do you have beady-eyes? LOL

I was on the 202 heading into Tempe from Mesa (6am) and ran into a wall of rain at Scottsdale road. It literally went from dry pavement to a heavy a heavy downpour. Here it is 45 minutes later and here in Tempe it is still pouring with the occasional crack of thunder to rattle the office with a flash of lightning.

Hunted it two or so years ago. Tons of road hunters and people sitting water. My son had a couple of shots but couldn't pull it together and we were the only ones I saw that hunted on foot outta backpacks. Lots a smaller bucks, the biggest we saw was a two point.

Looks 100% Mule Deer to me.

LOL Good one. I left NY many, many years ago and all I can say is Weiner needs to to slip in the subway and his wife should GTF outta Dodge. She obviously doesn't have any brothers living close by who can take him fishing for Mako's or Blue's.
-
Be careful out there. Lots of thunder and lightning and the roads are flooding pretty good too.

Howa make the Vanguard for Weatherby.

I looked for a few seconds (even turned ye olde laptop on it side) couldn't see it. Not to rag on you but I wish people wouldn't post pictures of "find the deer". I'd much rather actually see it like some of the pics REDRABBIT Posts.

About every 10 years or so I breakdown and buy a new pack. LOL I looked at Bass Pro and all they had was the Red Head stuff. Sportsmans had a better selection (all made in China) and the closest thing I saw that had what I was looking for was the Made In Vietnam X2. I have been using a Boyds but it isn't waterproof and although it is still ok I want to get a new day pack. This will eventually probably will get skeletonized and trimmed down to get attached to my metal external frame pack but I'm still on the hunt for a pack. Ideally the pack will have two long side pockets large enough to hold a liter bottle of water, have an exterior accessible pocket of at least 5"x8", weigh 2-3 pounds empty, be under 3200 cu", be camo, quiet and MOLLE. Yeah I know, dream on. Any of the Archery Places around Metro Phoenix have packs?

I contributed a recipe to this book and would love to be a part of something CWT does if it goes forward. http://www.amazon.com/Chefs-RodnReel-com-The-Fishing-Cookbook/dp/1589805534

Once the weather cools down I'll hike the trail to the Wind Cave in Usery Park a few times a week. I'm 60 and pretty much been able to eat whatever I want all my life and not gain much weight and am about 180 now which at 5'11 is the upper limit of where I like to be. I never seem to be able to find the time to workout so I watch what I eat. I do things like eat a 6" turkey sandwich with just spinach, cucumber, tomato, bell pepper and a sprinkle of oregano with no dressings a couple of times a week and eat a light dinner six days a week of a grilled chicken breast with some sliced tomatoes with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and once or twice a week when I get that craving for carbs I'll have some beans or wheat pasta. I stay away from things like French Fries, chips, donuts, ice cream, soft drinks etc. If you like that stuff it's ok just pick one and only have it once a month.

Need help or advise!? Looking for new scope
PRDATR replied to kyle44k's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
What's your price range? $200, $500, $1000? I'd say go over to longrangehuntingdotcom and read through the optics forum or check out opticsplanetdotcom forums. I have a 2x7 VX1 Leupold I think is a great value for the price range ($165) and just bought a Zeiss Conquest HD I also think is a great value @ just under a grand. Weaver, Burris, Leupold, Kahles and Nikon all make a quality scope. -
I have to wait for results to be posted as I put in on paper but people have been getting their cards charged since mid afternoon. Good Luck Guys and Gals.

If they have been called before and shot at they will hang up if they don't actually see something moving like a rabbit or another predator in the process of actually killing something. Eventually they get educated and in open country they will be leery of coming in too quick. If they stop and look back and take a step to turn, shoot them as they probably aren't going to come in any further. How far apart are you sitting from your hunting partner? I'v found that any where from 50 to 100 feet apart is ideal. I've never used an electronic caller but in open country on a calm morning I've heard electronic callers a half mile away. Predators will hone in on the call and pinpoint the sound to within 25 feet from a distance of three hundred yards so don't put the speaker too close or they will see you moving your head or hands. Once they do come into range you want to get the shot off in 3-4 seconds from the time you raise the rifle. If you have more than one come in shoot the furthest on first. If you have one come in and you shoot it, stay put and keep calling for another five minutes as more are probably on the way. Good Luck and keep trying.

Thanks, I appreciate all the responses. I am seriously looking at the Zeiss Conquest HD 5 in 3-15 and the Z600 or Z800 reticle.

I see this term used on scopes I would define as long range or tactical but haven't any idea on what it means. I would like to upgrade to a newer scope this year to replace the 20yo VXll on my 7mag and definitely want something I can use on game out to 500 yards using a reticle with dots of more than one crosshair.
