Great that your son got a bird and that your wife was there too. I have to admit it that I have gotten over excited too when hunting with my son when he was younger.

Pretty sure they run lots of sheep on the Big Boquillas Ranch in Unit 10.

Kudos to Adam. -
My son shot his first Cow Elk in there maybe 12 years ago, bulls were on fire. We did not see any snakes.

Sorry to hear that, my condolences. My grandfather (my namesake) died when I was just 9 but I spent a lot of time with him and idolized him. He passed while painting my god parents house very unexpectedly. My uncle went inside to get him some lemonade and came out to find him lying in the grass. My Mom wouldn't let me go to the funeral, thought it would be too traumatic so I stayed home to watch my younger brothers and sisters. 53 years later I'm still pissed.

bear hunting dangerous?
PRDATR replied to jeremiah lindsey's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I haven't heard of any bears attacking people when they were out hunting and I've been here since 77. All of the bears I've seen were headed for Dodge when they got wind of me. The attacks I can remember were when a bear came into a campground and into someones tent except for a buddy who rolled out his sleeping bag one night in 23 and a bear came in and grabbed him by the head to drag him off. I had a big old fatty charge my truck as I came down off the Rez into Eagle Creek this spring but it spun around and jiggled off in the direction it came from. Those Black River bruins don't get hunted enough in my opinion. -
WOW. That's some serious work. Glad you were able to score.

I hiked it with the wife in the 90's a year or two after the flood. We went up in the afternoon and slept in the parking lot that night. We hiked in the next morning and stayed until the next afternoon and hiked out at about 4:30 and slept at the mouth of the canyon then got up at first light and hiked up to the parking lot getting there by about 7AM then drove into Seligman for breakfast. The water that comes out of the spring is drinkable but tasted very chalky. The bathrooms were all makeshift and each one was in poor shape. The locals were not friendly in the least but we had no issues and went with a group of friends who had done this hike before. I probably have some old photo's (pre digital) somewhere. The hike was a piece of cake for me and although my wife had been hiking and working up to it she was sore for a few days after it. We did it over the 4th of July and the temps were ok. A bit hot in the afternoon when we hiked out but the canyon you will hike into is narrow and the walls are maybe 150' tall so you are in the shade most of the time. We enjoyed it but there are people everywhere.

I think we are quite lucky Az has so much public land
PRDATR replied to naturegirl's topic in The Campfire
I was back east in NY all last week (nephews wedding) and flew from here to Baltimore then to Islip. I can totally relate to that view from the plane. Each time I thought to myself where do people hunt with everyone on top of each other? None of it looked huntable with a rifle. Even though I grew up on Long Island and sorely miss some aspects of it I do not think I could move back there on a permanent basis. It made me claustrophobic just looking down from the plane at it all. I felt a big sigh of relief when the plane came out of the clouds somewhere over New Mexico and all that was below us was miles of barren land. -

You guys did great. -
While snow is a possibility it usually melts off in a couple of days.

Not a problem at all.

I guess we can continue to stir this pot over and over despite the numerous discussions we have already had. -
My son works 9 on and 5 off so today he was on his first day of being off so he and I went out this morning. I got 10 MD, 5 WW and 7 Collards. He got 7,2 & 6. I had to get back to work and made it in by 9:30. I always open the shop at about 6AM so it was nice coming in and the coffee was already made.

Another thought would be to parkerize it. I did that with a BAR in 300 WM I bought when they first came out. -
Arrowed my first black bear!!!!!!
PRDATR replied to bowhuntaz1's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Great story and video. If I was lucky enough to arrow a deer from someone elses tree stand I'd probably leave them $20. -
Welcome, I'm a NY'er myself but I have lived here for almost 40 years and hunted 33 a few times including the October hunt. Hiking in from the closest road is what people are referring to. That hunt, depending on what elevation you hunt "could" see temps in the 30's at night and 90's in the day. But most likely the nigh time temps will be in the upper 40's to 50's. I have always managed to get the meat out and cooled down (into a cooler) in 4-5 hours with no problems to the meat.

ISIS and a Dirty Bomb is a very real threat. The next coordinated attack will be an all or nothing attack and is going to make 911 look like a kids birthday party.

It started off slow but as it got closer to sunrise the birds started showing up. My son had to work and I had the day off so I made the best of it. After two hours I used up the 60 or so shells I brought which were a mish marsh of old shells I had collected over the years. I even had one Active shell, but I didn't shoot it. All in all I came up with 34 doves, 2 White Wings, 11 Mourning Doves and 21 Collard Doves. There were lots of pigeons but I didn't have any #6 shot.

'tis the season for kills - a little advice given for leftover part disposal
PRDATR replied to naturegirl's topic in The Campfire
That looks like some sort of Horn Worm Catapillar and the spider looks like a female. Excellent picture. -
Big fish. What rod is that Calcutta on?
-
Never hunted it myself but since it is so visible I would think it gets quite a bit of action.

That is pretty awesome. Just being in the woods with family makes it all worth it somehow.
