Youth Javelina 2017 is in the Books

That's great, he is really coming along as a hunter. Probably because he has such a good role model.

Who else is going out this weekend?

Got to camp and set it up just before dark. It was eerily quiet all. No Elk or Yotes. I left camp at sunrise and hunted my way north for half a mile to a tank and sat it until about 1 o'clock. Only saw a elk and her calf, one note and lots of woodpeckers and a few squirrels so I walked back to camp to get my 22 and drove back. As I was getting the 22 loaded and husband and wife were walking up and we talked for a bit. She had a tag so they were going to go up and sit the trick tank. I told them I had not seen any turkeys, or tracks all morning and wished them luck. Well all the squirrels I had seen earlier were nowhere to be found so I went back to camp and decided to drive a few miles to another area. When I got back out onto Houston Mesa Rd I had only gone about a 1/4 mile and came up on four hens in the road. I stopped and grabbed the shotgun and a shell and ran into the forest and took a shot but missed. Back up and to the truck to get another shell and I notice the last hen still on the other side of the road getting to make a beeline across it to catch up with the others. Knowing where she was headed I ignored her and ran into the woods to intercept her, meanwhile my truck is idling on the side of the road with the doors open. I managed to get off a shot that put her down as lady luck would have it. Sure had my adrenalin going. I got back to camp and took a few pictures and the couple from earlier came by and she got to see her first turkey up close. After I plucked and cleaned it a young couple from Pine drove by and saw me put it in the cooler and stopped to chat. I got up early and broke camp and headed out at 7:30 and met another husband and wife who were walking in and stopped to talk and tell them what I knew about the area then headed out. It was refreshing to see three married couples who hunted together as that was something I could never get my wife to do. Two of the couples the wife was the one with the tag and all were genuinely nice people. That's my old Mossberg 500 I hand painted back in about 1985.

Good Luck. It has been a few years since I was in 33 but just might be my fav unit for deer. I was getting rambunctious on my way home from work seeing everyone headed out.

    Archery NM Barbary Sheep

Felt like I was there right along with you. Big Congrats. Neither of my brothers hunt so it was very special when my brother from NY came out for a few days and went camping and turkey hunting with me in 27. Be was the one who heard a gobble that I set up on and called him in and took him with my brother beside me. It was great.

    Unit 33 Road Conditions?

If it's the road I'm thinking of you won't be able to get a trailer up it.
  20. Asking for a friend. LOL Seriously though, should I clean them right away instead of a couple of hours later? My son asked me this last week, said he loves eating them but they seem to be a pain to clean and get the skin off.

    Taking a Knee...

It has existed since the beginning of time (not JJ's Nip LOL) and will be here long after millenia of our prodigy are fossilized. It's human nature, familiarity brings composure and acceptance. But that is on a personal level. Hollywood Sci Fi would have us believe that it is inevitable we evolve past being judgemental. Will people always blame their short comings on others of different ethnicities? Some will, if they get comfort in it and can get some attention. Nobody is exempt from these feelings but if you can find it withing yourself to come to terms with it and take the extra step to walk a mile in someoneelses shoes then that is a start. America is racially divided, and probably will always be for those who aren't white. The struggle is very real. For a white parent there is only the discussion with your kids about the usual stuff. Don't argue with the police and be respectful and it may go well. If you are black or brown it's a whole different talk. You hear it from the time you learn to walk, what to do because you are immediately looked upon as a risk/potential threat. Public Enemy No 1. Just the reality of where we are at today. Is it getting better for them, yup. I am 65 years old and have seen a lot of things we take for granted unfold. Rosa Parks, MLK, The Little Rock9, Freedom Riders. I have a huge problem with the way people are treated. Eric Garner, choked to death for selling cigarettes. Choke hold that was already departmental banned. 12 year old kid playing with a toy gun darn near run down then shot to death in a playground. It goes on and on. NFL players taking a knee "during" the NA as far as I'm concerned isn't the stage to make a point. But I can feel their frustration as America doesn't seem to be paying attention under Bush, Obama or Trump. I don't have any answers. They brought it to the forefront and hit a nerve, words and ideals have been exchanged. Maybe something positive will come out of it in the long run but people are choosing sides and digging in their heals which is counter productive.
