    12b west early hunt

My son and I did our usual thing. Find a place to camp, get up early have a quick bite to eat, put on our packs and head out about an hour before sunrise and cover ground. Funny you should mention waterholes. Now just at first light I glassed up some deer a few hundred yards away on the edge of a pasture so we worked our way to them and when we popped out there was a small buck with the doe's moving off but my son wasn't up to snuff to be able to get a shot off. I then glassed up some other deer about 400 yards across the pasture and saw one was a buck so we cut across the pasture as the deer fed into the tree line. We cam out on the other side and looked around for them but there was a sloping cut so I told my son to head into it and be ready. As he went a truck across the next field appeared driving real slow with the headlights still on even though it was light and the sun was coming up. I saw my son pop up about 50 yards away and then the deer appeared out in front of him. JUst a little spooked but again he had trouble getting steady for a shot and then the truck stopped about 250 yards away and the grandpa and grandson we would run into later in the day, got out and the kid readied for a shot but the old man waved him off. My son kept waiting for the deer to stop so he could get a shot but they never did. About 4pm we found a tank so we set up about 150 yards across an open firm from it and just waited. Maybe an hour later a grandpa and his 20 something son drove about 50 yards from it and parked. I stood up and waved to them and he waved back and backed out. Maybe an hour later a husband and wife came walking along and started to step into where we were sitting under some Junipers. They saw us and waved then went back the way they came. We sat there until sunset and not seeing anything we packed up and left as we had about a mile hike back to where we were camped. We went about 40' and there was the husband and wife all set up. I hear they do OTC Elk tags for that area so if that is still the case I would get one.

    12b west early hunt

I had the 1st hunt about 5 years ago and saw a couple of smaller bucks but my son wasn't fast enough to get a shot off. Everyone we came across on that hunt were road hunting.

Guaranteed to be smaller. I have some 20x80's and FOV is probably 60% of 15's. Very noticeable.

Questions for the unit 10 antelope gurus

Sounds like you were "Home on the range where the deer and the antelope play". In the early 90's a buddy and I went to Raton to shoot in the Nationals for High Power Silhouette. After practice we drove into NM to some volcano park and watch some similar behaviour. We watched as a group a 1000 yards away milled around then one trotted off to a barbed wire fence line and ran back and forth. Then kneeled down and went under it. Once on the other side he ran around in circles and went back to the fence. One by one they each came to the fence and went under it. Once they were all on the other side they briefly ran around together going back and forth then herded up as pretty as can be and ran off together at high speed until they were almost out of site.

You need to drop off a paper app today if you want it mailed there for Monday morning. The list is so small there will not be anything left for first come first served OTC.

Pretty sure he already has the rifle. Big Medicine but will put the smack down on Elk.
  18. Look for clearance prices after the seasons. Last year I bought 50 boxes Dove loads for $2 a box at Walmart.

    Which Tires?

I had Nittos and ran them for maybe 7 years then switched to Toyo. Nittos were a softer compound and would tear up easier off road and I got about 45-50K on my F250. Bough the Toyo's abut 3.5 years ago and have put 33K on them. They get rotated every 5K and I took them off a few weeks ago and they have about 4/32's left.

    Last Grizzly in AZ

Unless you were Mr Wilson. People just don't realize how fast they can run, know of one tale where a guy on horseback was chased for close to a mile. I was about 100 miles east of Nome hunting Caribou in the early 90's when my BIL's podner came back alone about 10:30 as it was getting dark. Seems they flipped on of the quads and Gary went off and got lost. Big mountains but all tundra, cept for a few bottoms with sporadic willows. I had killed earlier in the day and after taking care of mine I helped the teenage son of one of the other hunters get his cut up and hung it in an old abandon building that had been part of a military radar base. Darkness takes forever up there after the sunsets but as it fell I started a fire in a 55 gallon drum at the air strip as the others went off to find him. We were about 400 yards from the miners shack we were staying in and in the rush I left my sidearm and rifle back there not expecting to need them. I remembered Don telling me that one year they were sitting there in the same spot after dark when a bear walked past them up to a quad that had some caribou quarters on the rear rack held down with bungee straps. It sniffed the meat, grabbed a quarter in it's jaws, pulled it free in one motion and sounded off into the night. There was a "shed" at one end of the air strip where some hunters would stay. Maybe 10x15 with a makeshift bunk and like most remote buildings a few supplies people would leave rather than load up and fly out with. Kinda customary, from what I gathered, to leave what you brung and didn't use so people after you would have some supplies if needed for survival. There was a message scribbled on the wall that went something like " to the dirty son of a bich who took my stove,,,," seems someone had left it there. I took another 55 gallon drum and used it to get up on the roof of the shed in case a bear decided to pay the fire a visit and so I could see past the brightness of the fire. It got cold but maybe only to about freezing and spent a few hours up there, only getting down to stoke the fire. I could see the headlights of the quads going back and forth in the distance and occasionally Garys flashlight. Finally about 1AM they all made it back. It was early September and earlier that day I was in a T Shirt but now it was pretty cold and Gary, even with his years as a Scout Leader, wasn't prepared for the emotional part of getting stranded. He had his Army P-Coat but was on the verge of hypothermia and even though back to us he was pretty unsettled. We managed to kill two more caribou the next day and Jim Tweto came in late in the day and flew us back to Unalakleet.

That time of year can be dry or 2' of snow so be prepared. It's a good tag to have. With monsoon rains hitting the rim country now would be a great time to get up there and get familiar with the unit and find potential places to camp.
