    Hunting mistakes and misses

I was hunting 3 years ago in 36B. I took a shot at a nice buck across a canyon and missed. The buck ran a bit and I missed again. I moved down the ridge aways to see if I could spot the buck again, no dice. I was sitting on a rock glassing furiously and what walks up my side of the canyon? That darn buck and his little buddy. He looked, I raised my gun and pulled the trigger. The old Ruger just went "click". I forgot to rack another round. I swear that if that deer had a middle finger, he'd a flipped it to me. He was at 6 paces as I tried to range the tree he was standing by and it wouldn't register. I walked it off and later nearly cried. Oh well, a good story and a in hindsight, a good memory. Mark

    Total Noob looking for advice

Hey all - I just drew my first turkey tag... Really it is the first time I have ever put in but who's counting (if it could only work that way for sheep....).. In any case, Any advice as to how/when to call and locate birds would be greatly appreciated. I am going to pick up a couple of calls and begin practicing but I'm not even sure what type of terrain to start in. I'll be in Unit 1 and again, any advice (not looking for honey-holes) would be awesome! Thanks - Mark

Jan 2010 Muley back from the "Tax"

EAS - He looks pretty close. he had a pretty good neck when I took him and a cool scar on his nose. That scar came out perfectly.
  9. Hello All - I wanted to drop a couple photo's of my mounts. Both shoulder mounts were done by Dean Lippert and crew at Lippert Doyle Taxidermy in Tucson. The Late John Doyle did most of my fathers mounts and it was a logical step for me to take my stuff to Dean. I couldn't be happier. The Coues is pretty special to me for a number of reasons. First, this is the largest "Ghost" I have taken to date. Second, this was the last successful deer hunt that my dad was able to join me on. He still goes to camp with me but isn't able to make it back into the sticks.. You'll notice that the mount is a bit faded, my fault. When I had this mount in its original location it got a ton of sunlight. It is important to choose a good location for your mounts that protects them from these things. I think that is often overlooked... Having said all that, I think I will keep it just as is, broken skull cap (Thanks UPS delivery guy in Seattle) and all... Dean fixed that too BTW.....Ughh. The little antler mount was the first Coues I was able to take.. Jim Levy, another one of my dad's cronies did that for me as they used the cape for a customer that popped his Coues in the head... I just picked up the Muley from Dean on Saturday. This deer, as they all are, is special in that this was my first archery hunt (Jan 2010), the first animal I pulled my bow back on and my first Muley.. I really like the pose and the detail that the guys were able to recreate, right down to the scar on this old boys face. That's it for now.. Mark

    Camo on a rifle hunt?

Welcome to the site and good luck on your hunt.. In reference to your question, the crew has provided a great deal of good information.. As for me, I often wear camo rifle hunting if for no other reason than I keep all of my hunting clothes in a rubbermaid container with a few scent waffers in it. Most of it is camo.. That being said, a good tan set of double front pants like carhartt or even from Sportmans Guide will serve you very well in area's with vegetation that scratches, claws, pricks and bites..

ANOTHER F'd rifle came from UPS!

That sucks man... I had my best ever Coues mount sent to me in Washington when I was there. Used UPS and opened up the wood crate, which was damaged to find the antlers hanging off each side of the head.. Broken Skull Cap... So much for booking that one.. I hope your luck improves

    Lion spotted in Gilbert???

I'm in Sossoman Estates (right across the street) and while I haven't received any notices regarding this, I can confirm that the coyote population in the area is larger now than anytime in the 7 years I've lived there. I typically see 2-3 a month in the AM while leaving for work.???
