  3. Forgot the most important part of the story we rear ended the car in front of us and the guy got out ARMS IN THE AIR he was huge,.. Rob's trying to yell words spittin this bee out and he surged brakes and hit him again. Damage was minor but man it was funny. We blew the evening hunt that day. Day
  4. Bee story time: Flagstaff archery elk 98' pulled into town day 6-7 to hit America truck stop for showers and my buddy took a sip off his soda. As he started spitting coke all over the dash we were in front seat laughing at him thinkin he choked or got some up his nose. Huh, a bee was in it the can stung his lower lip and man it swelled up huge,... for like almost a week,..we still call him big lip to this day. If your ever on a CB on I-17 or 1-40 "big lip" you got your ears on,.. Dan

    The best unit

With the crap we all face on draw percentages/odds these days I think we will all hunt every unit mentioned above atleast once over the next decade. I say we are still extremely fortunate to all be out in the field. Enjoy it while you can! Dan
  6. We hunted javelina in 37A this past Jan. and saw a lot of quail on cattle water holes. But some nice muley bucks are still in there. We saw a few nice ones cross the road from B to A,..2 weeks in row within 1.5 mi of each other at 4:30 in the morning. Got a shot at 1 4X4 and a bobcat the last weekend of the hunt. No kill though. We were in an area most people would look at and think TTTT!! there ain't nothing in that country but it was loaded. We saw one herd of 17 does one day. As for the javelina we hunted the same herd 3 weekends in a row and my J-13 call actually made them run. I think they have herd that call in there before and know its end results. Have fun Dan

    Commission Decisions?

Well good atleast they will hit em in the pocket book. That will put a hurt on a large percentage of the number of NR applicants. I have 11 bonus points for Antelope maybe next year is a given for the my 1st choice. Nice Post Desrt Rat Thanks, Dan
  9. Well the poll was never intended to bum people out. So I apoligize,.. On a better note just got home from Bushnell tanks area not much in the burned area on west side Beeline,... No sheds and we walked for 3.5 hours,.. saw couple small ones,.,. there have been elk clear down that low I was surprised. In the past lowest I seen them was Cane Springs,....Probably cause the fire and water near those homes. Have fun Dan

    found bear

I remember 2 years ago near Deer creek area over hearing on my radios a couple guys talking on their walkabouts for awhile about one of them losing his range finder. Wonder what he's thinking reading this column if he never found it. Any of you find 1 near deer creek? Dan

    Bow Brands

I have 2 PSE's one the old cadillac weighs a ton and a carrera from couple years ago, huge improvements from PSE last few years as everyone knows. Martin has some really nice bows out there also I'm surprised the rating are so low. Any of you tried the whisker yet this season? Dan
  12. Curious on Mazatzal condition after the fire,.. and how bad has the burn hit the Verde side. What game is being seen. Is it a lot of mozaic burn back in the trail heads. Dan

    New way of hunting discovered!!!!

I was hiking reavis trailhead quite a few years ago in Jan and took a nice 2x3 muley archery hunting javelina,. and thinking back now I was probably only one pace 2-3 feet off the actual trail and it is a numbered trail I wonder how a G&F officer would have handled that? My truck was back in the parking lot connected to the trail. Most archery hunters have probably always seen a nice buck when driving down a dirt road and got out and taken a shot by just stepping off the road. Isn't that what everyone has always thought of as the legal rule? Well for me I have never got to play road hunter with a rifle deer tag we have always back packed in miles to get away from the roads. But to go back a few topics I have done the quail thing with trucks in washes like one guy mentioned earlier. Hhm,... Dan

    New way of hunting discovered!!!!

Josh, just driving down a road scoutin right now would be ok with me seeing a nice buck and watchin the sun go down. Just came from the me from the gun show at the Fair grounds, man ever since 911 people think some of the shittiest old guns are worth hundreds of dollars. Some of the stuff is way overpriced let me tell you. Last one in Jan I bought a nice .222 12 ga o/under and a TC could not find a decent barrel for the TC today for under 250.00,... well did get a lot of ammo cheap for practicing with though. One guy had a nice coues rack on a table in the back of his display,.. he wouldn't say where he found it when I asked him. Like the deer was still up there tied to a tree rubbin the velvet right now waiting for him to get drawn. What a good one. Figured you'd be out scouting for elk for next weeks hunt. Have fun Dan

Josh, no doubt!! Wasn't that the one shot on san carlos and they claimed it was for the meat and it was also taken out of the normal season. Dan

    New way of hunting discovered!!!!

You guys sure get worked up on this site,..Road hunters will always be there. It's the shooting capabilities you have to be concerned with. They'll hop out of a truck hit the edge of a road and fire as many rounds as necessary till that deer shows a sign he's been hit. We actually witnessed this with people on horse back last year. Pretty sad when 3 guys have to lite up a canyon on 1 or more deer and not know the outcome of any of the deer they shot at except the one they took down. Just watch em to make sure they don't pouch anything or destroy good terrain. They will never see half the game a glasser is gonna see. You can sometimes use someone elses movement to your advantage. I'll bet the highest number of unsuccessful hunters for all big game every year is road hunters. I've seen people at work 4+ groups get drawn for elk/deer and come back with 1 if their lucky. They drink, road hunt and probably hang around camp to much. Have fun, Dan

    Secrets to Josh's success?

Hunting/Hilking in Az my entire life I've found a lot of sheds 90% are all coues. I think all deer usaully stay within a couple of square miles from where they are born. If you see bucks in an area glassing chances are that area you're glassing will have sheds in it. It's all about hiking the more ground you cover the higher your percentages I have had years where seems some bucks come back to the same spot within 100yds to drop their sheds. Can't give away these spots although I will tell you it is up to 12 miles from the truck. Actually have spotted kills and single sheds glassing so good optics can aid you in finding some. I know of one nice shed in unit 32,.. I spotted it glassing and left it in Nov. Hopefully I will be down there in Jan for archery to see if it is still there. Have Fun Dan
  19. Treestand vacation man,.. just curious what choice was your Dec Unit 31 on the draw this year? Dan

Trouble and Danger in UNIT 34A

Friends of mine hunt the Oct hunt down there almost every year and I think 2 years ago they headed out in the dark and came back in the dark and when they returned found they're camp was raided my Mojado's. they took everything they could carry. And it was some serious weight added up. Must of beeen a good group. Sad thing is they most likely leave all the wrappers and trash as they go. But atleast no one was hurt. That is a terrible what happened to this guy,... personally I'd rather have been mauled by a bear any day then to die from some jack butt just plain murdering me.

    Nice Coues Deer buck

Nice buck,...How much water is in the tank or hole beyond that fence has it and others been hitting it on a regular base?
  22. Easiest way is to put in for Javelina Archery 1st and 2nd choice for those units 21, 22 or 23. The whitetail are down low in both these units in January. And the hornier they are the closer you can get. Later, Dan
