Now not all AZ muleys are the desert type. Look at 27 and the Kaibab areas. Areas most Coues hunters would say is coues habitat only. Its the exact opposite in those areas. Muleys up high in the oaks and junipers, pines even! And is it just me or does it seem like Muleys dont handle the droughts as good??
-
So can we call Coues- greyhounds(small, delicate, grey, and well not always much bigger than a greyhound dog) !
-
yeah , that is probably true! Been closer to some Rockies in 27 than any Muley or Coues for that matter. If you hunt Coues for taste than how do you eat Javelina(no offense against those who like too)????
-
yes, get to calling ! Obvisouly they were hungry and are probably alot of them in there.

Choooooooooow!!!!!!!!!!

So if you tell someone what unit you shot your trophy in, you think everyone is going to go there and get a trophy too?? I'll tell people whatever they want to know. If they dont get off there butts like the previous posts say, telling them the unit doesnt matter one bit. Besides, look at how big units are, as long as you dont give your secret spot away, telling them your unit isnt going to matter one bit. There are animals everywhere, and they dont belong to one or a few people, they are there for everyone. There effort and time in the woods is what makes them succesful, not me telling them the Unit I killed in. I don't get people who hoard info. Helping people alittle gets more people into the sport .

Well done! What gun, what caliber were you using??
-
Been thinking about getting a new rifle this year probably in 270 wsm. I have been eyeballing the new Win Model 70 made in South Carolina by FN. They seem like they could be a really good gun. Free floated barrel, adjustable trigger, Controlled round Feed, Full length claw extractor. Made in the USA. Alot of things that most people seem to favor in a gun. Would like one to go along with my older Model 70 in 30-06. Seem to be better than the ones right at the end when they quit making them a few years ago. Not necessarily saying the last ones where bad though. Anybody have one or any experiance with the new ones??

Yeah, no kidding !! Try to keep copper fouling down and you reach for a brush and its like....DoH!!!

New Winchester Model 70's(FN)
BeardownAZ replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Everybody always talks about the pre 64 model 70's(with good reason) but I have a 1970 something model post 64 of course and it is a great rifle. I heard that right about the time the WSM's & WSSM's came out that those rifles werent built that great. However I have been around them some and they still seem to be a good rifle, maybe not as good as better years past but still good. I was just curious about the most recent ones made under FN. Yes, FN does seem to know there stuff about firearms. Very underrated and not so well known suprisingly! Also current owners of Browning as well, which alot of people dont know. current standard features under the new FN Win model 70's(according to there 2009 catalog) this not a plug for winchester just what I am observing what they claim forged reciever-epoxy bedded target crown free floated barrel adjustable trigger recoil lug forged with reciever claw extractor-Controlled round feed Pachmayr recoil pad trigger guard & mag frame one piece steel All sounds good, what do you think? -
I can't decide if I either have a great deal of respect or think of you all as crazy for doing so much work for these tiny deer(even the big ones). I still have a few more days left in my hunt but man are they sneaky and hard. I have such a hard time just sitting and glassing for hours( my problem). They really do disappear easy. I have been in areas where you would swear they are farming deer in there or something. Had a 200 yard shot at a running 85-90+ 3x3 buck but could hardly see him as he was in the shadows and I was shooting into the sun. I guess I at least tried. I do think I will go back to Mulies though. Thats just what I have grown up hunting and know how to do better. Have learned alot though and will be even better at Mulie hunting cause of it. Who knows, if I can get a later December tag, I may be back out after the grey ghosts again. So how much better is it if the weather is colder?? Yeah, I laugh now at the Outdoor channel when these people talk about tuff hunts back east hunting Eastern Whitetail. If you can be successful at Coues, I think the rest, exception of sheep maybe, would be easy or lots easier. Good luck to the rest of you on your hunts!

I wish I could find the pictures of me and my sister feeding COUES in New Mexico in the Ft. Bayard area. And yes there were bucks in the group. Mule deer fascinate the eastern whitetail hunters if you ever read articles by people who normally hunt back east. They also say they are much harder to hunt. Of course they have never hunted a real whitetail like Coues, and I am a Carp fan myself. This was my first year truly dedicating a hunt on Coues and I believe they are harder. Mule deer are curious, I dont think necessarily dumb though. I dont think your methods are keeping you from killing or seeing deer. I have always walked, glass, walk some more, repeat. Sometimes you got to get out in the brush to get em moving. I plan on using some of my newly learned Coues skills next year to kill a Mulie, hopefully a bigger one than ever before. Good luck!

27 ! Thats were deer hunting and all hunting started for me! I love it up there. So many different areas to go and elevation styles to choose from. Hopefully will be up there next year going after Mulies again or maybe Elk for a first time. Yeah its hard to get Elk experiance when its so dang hard to get drawn for to begin with. Good Luck!

Thinking about getting a new rifle between now and next season. Trying to decide between .270 wsm or 7mm wsm. Browning makes rifles of all sorts in both calibers and now that FN owns Browning and Winchester, they are starting to produce the Model 70 again. I really would like one in the Model 70 and can find lots of 70's in the 270 wsm but they really dont seem to have near as many in 7mm wsm. I like the 7mm wsm cause of the ability to go bigger in bullet size but gun ability seems to maybe dictate that. Whats peoples experiance on here with either caliber?? Also experiance with these calibers in the Win Model 70's if any?? This will be mostly for Mulies and whitetail. Possible elk if I ever get drawn but have an 30-06 and 300 weatherby for that. Thanks for any help! Also an excuse to buy another gun as well!!!

4100 fps? . Now thats a burner. I to like anything new, gun related. We all know you dont have to have the latest and greatest caliber or gun to kill animals, just look how long the 30-30 and 30-06 have been going and keep going. But its fun to try the new things out and we all try and justify why we need to buy it but in reality we dont need to justify it or have a reason at all, other than its fun and because we can. The short and super short mags were a cool idea when they came out and still are i think, to bad they didnt go alittle farther popularity wise.

If you are not a member of the NRA...
BeardownAZ replied to DesertBull's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
These groups(Center for Biological Diversity, etc) will never stop! They would like people to become extinct they are so radical. Best money I spend each year is my NRA membership! -
Yeah, I to worry about the 7mm wsm disappearing and will probably not go with it cause of that. I know people used to say the .357 Sig would disappear in the pistol world but it seems to be making it. However I think the 7mm is in a different boat here in the rifle world than the .357 Sig is in the pistol world. The 243 wssm really seem to of made a huge improvement according to the ballistics comparison with the standard 243. But when Winchester took a dive off a cliff a few years ago, I think all these calibers either went along with the company or suffered cause of it. Its a shame, cause its always nice to have more options even if they aren't always really needed or much better.
-
Hey SunDevil, dont blame Dennis Erickson on us Wildcats!! That was all you guys. ! The 270 wsm seems like maybe abetter choice ammo wise, but both are really ballistically great on paper. Hows there recoil? Similar to the originals?? I hear the newer 70s are good to and I have noticed they arent currently chambering the latest ones in 7mm wsm either. Weird cause its ther own caliber.

Not knocking anyones ways either but "all natural" for me is the most rewarding. Baiting, feeding etc, would cost alot I would think, also you know they are gonna show eventually. I like the challenge of not knowing when and where its gonna be as fustrating as it can be sometimes. The Tv shows are neat to see the size of the animals but these guys are shooters, farmers, not really hunters IMAO. They are guided right to the animals or crop them up in there backyard and get all outragously happy like they are suprised to see the animal they just shot. Genetically altered may be a big deal to see how big they get to a scientist doing a experiment but to a hunter?? Theres nothing wild about it or even challenging! No skill required. Just not for me but to each his own, I guess!

Well I hunted 31 this year, and yeah there is no life of anykind in 27 ! And there are no whitetail or bear in 31 either!!
-
Done for the year. No dice this time . As much as I hate to admit this, I missed a running shot yesterday that I could've, should've made, at a small fork horn. Sighted for 200, he was 150-175 yards at moving quickly and shot right over his back. I missed judged the distance and aimed high. Oh, well. Guess it better to have gotten to shoot and not at all. Will probably go back to 27 Mulies but have a crazy itch to buy a 7mm wsm or 270 wsm and get into this shooting long distances at lil grey deer !!

I am seing loads of does. Most with youngins right behind. Has to be bucks around if there are fawns right?? I would think seeing something(does) should be ok. But I am not a expert by any means on this. Just read all my other question asking posts .

ok. So how about this. Do you walk to your first area in the morning in the full dark or wait till light ?? I have been walking once it is just barely light enough to see. Thats how I have always done it with Mulies, with fear of kicking something up and not being able to see it. Maybe thats part of my problem right now. Not being already at my spot ready to glass at first light but still walking. in.
