    Questions on deer habits

Almost every time this last week I saw cows, there were deer in the same canyon or hill. Alil odd how often it was occurring. Of course they were all antlerless deer 😣

    Unconventional hunting Areas

Have any of you ever hunted in what could be called an unconventional or obvious area? What I mean is, every time i go into the hills, hunting, scouting, just passing time, etc, or just down the highways, I am always looking at areas thinking what the hunting there might be like. But some areas I always wonder about are the close by, probably overlooked zones. Like going through a gate on a dirt road. How many people actually hunt the immediate area instead of going way back in like 99 percent probably do. Or the canyons next to a paved road or highway that everyone zooms past or closer to town then most would think. I've heard of people saying often of seeing deer but big deer/elk too in these areas. Yet never heard of anyone hunting them. It's always everyone trying to get far away from these places, myself included. So anyone try it? I know there are animals in these areas but I believe there are probably quite a few big ones as well. It's always made me wonder. Might try it soon.

    Unconventional hunting Areas

wouldnt worry to much about that. People are gonna hunt wherever they want. A post on this site is not gonna change that. Exactly. I dont think what I posted is some big secret. If people start doing it, that just means another area that used to get hit will be neglected and more animals will eventually be there, again. Most people are too rigid in there routine too change unless it became the next big thing everyone else was doing.

Well wasn't talking about road hunting but considering how many people kill by the road and how many I've seen, well......😆

    Unconventional hunting Areas

I killed my buck last year less then a mile from a main hwy. I stayed on a power line rd on the high spot were the main transmission line pole was and just glassed the rolling hills just left of a very used dirt road. A few people went up and down that road as I was watching some deer in the next small canyon over. That canyon was at best 500 yards or so over from that road. Those deer never paid any attention as the vehicles drove by. Made me rethink were deer will be. And this was the fifth day of the hunt.

Yeah Bighorn sheep are so normal by town not to far from hear no one is surprised or even that thrilled. No one even looks at them as game animals(almost) really they are so common. If deer where seen like that people would be getting excited.

Finally a buck bigger than the boiling pot

Nice buck. 400 yards is still a long shot. Shooting a 1000 yards with a custom rifle and a space telescope attached to it, isn't impressive anymore when the equipment takes all the skill and work out of it. . Doing it the way you did is more impressive. Good Job!

    Ford 150 ecoboost 4X4

I've been interested in these too. Good, interesting info. Name a gas truck that does get good mileage hauling, none that I'm aware of. And they usually struggle bad too going up any hills. It sounds like the perfect compromise between gas and diesel. Especially if you haul infrequently, which most hunters do.

  13. Anyone know of a good smith that can change barrels and rechamber a Win Mod 70 from 270 wsm to 300 wsm? This gun shoots ok but not great. Seems I have heard similar issues as well with this caliber. Go up or down in bullet grains doesn't seem to help. Thought my best bet would maybe be changing calibers. I literally can shoot 3 rounds at best and it starts throwing rounds. It heats up super quick and I understand that a hot barrel can be less accurate but this is ridiculous. Its 3/4 in accurate first 2 shots, after that no less then 2 inchs(100 yards). Sometimes worse. I've had other factory rifles(various) get real hot and still shoot way better then this gun. Just alil frustrated. maybe my expectations are to high. Thoughts??

Yeah I've realized now its not a volume shooting caliber. Bummer

    270 wsm to 300 wsm

I've kinda considered one of the savage long range hunters or something like it. Longer tapered barrel, but not heavy barrel, good trigger, good accuracy(so i've heard and read), muzzle break for reduced recoil(nice for longer shooting sessions at the range). I don't want a heavy barrel, had one before, never again for hunting. I like my current setup on this rifle minus the problems or the things i've encountered I just don't like. Like I said, I think my expectations are different from what I got. Its a good gun, I've just found myself wanting different things from it.

    270 wsm to 300 wsm

Looking back, I wish I had choose a different caliber for the purpose of shooting more often.I was looking at a lil bit faster, flatter shooting rifile for dual deer(mostly muley) and elk gun. I agree, I don't think its a caliber you shoot a lot with. I like the ballistics and its versatility for game animals but I think I would of been better off with a more common round like a 300 win mag or something. As far as Tikkas go, I had one in .223 and it was laser beam accurate too. Based on past trials and theorys, a short fat case generally produces good ballistics and accuracy. These to me though feel short for what they could/should be. I'll do some more research and see what route I want to take if any.

    Shooting at NAU

Israelis should be a model for security in terms of dealing with the thugs of the world. Even though this incident wasn't a mass school shooting, and a armed teacher wouldn't of mattered. Cant stop all crazies from doing crazy unfortunetly

    Breaking a new one in?

Now days barrel break in is a complete waste of time and money in my opinion. I've done it and look back thinking what a waste of ammo. And that was with a long range 308 I was shooting paper with. I think its a gimmick personally but if you think it works, do it. I mean it all seems like no one has definitive proof it does or doesn't work anyway.

    Archery 27????

My dad had the September rifle hunt last year in 27 and they rutted on and off but definetly not hard. It was more like a late November tag without the cold and an occasional bugle. But in Unit 1, they were going nuts. Really strange. It also rained non stop for 5 day of the hunt to so that didn't help either.

    New to Coues / AZ

The way u describe getting prepared you will be 100 times more prepared then most SUCCESFUL coues hunters are. So u are doing good. Like was mentioned, just be patient. They are a tough little deer to see but once you learn what to look for they will start coming out of the woodwork. I don't have patience, so I'm not good with glassing along time which is key to Coues. Even mule deer need patience if u want to kill nice ones in this part of the country. I'm slowing appreciating glassing more and less walking myself to death for lil deer. Lions are everywhere, literally, just don't plan on seeing one, they don't like being seen, not on purpose anyways. Lots and lots of open country. I was stationed in Virginia for 4 years and cant ever see hunting anyway but the wide open like it is here. Not as much opportunity(one deer a year) but its truly hunting, not bait and wait or waiting over plots you know the deer will come to for sure. You're skill will be tested for sure but its more rewarding in my opinion.
