    223 factory loads??(pics pg. 3)

Seen those hornadys spire points at Sportsmans. Price wasn't terrible. With ARs getting as cheap as they are, its almost making me rethink semi auto.

I can imagine the heavier bullets in 223 really do good. The only reason I want to stay in the middle of bullet weight is due to commonality. Maybe I could go up a tad to 62 grain as that is somewhat common. If I was handloading that would be different. I'm fine using factory loads for 223. I've gotten to the point of trying to consolidate calibers to common ones.

And that's why FMJs are illegal......Yup. Yet our militaryis made to use them I haven't researched this but I've been told that's because a wounded soldier takes Out 3 where a Dead Soldier only takes out one, the Dead. Yeah something like that. Don't think this current enemy cares about that though. Definitely think 223 is good but bullet selection can make a huge difference. Some rounds have more room for error, I don't think this one does.

I think the 50 grains would be lightest I would go. I want to stick to the 50-60 grain area. I have seen some of the Winchester bulk white box 45 grain 22-250 loads fly to pieces out of a gun due to the velocity and rate of twist that obviously wasn't good for them. I hit a coyote years back with an AR but all I had was some 55 grain FMJs. Wasn't hunting but came across this dog and nailed him good, or so I thought. He dropped after spinning around a few times. Went to go get him and he took off running not looking very healthy in the process. Never could recover him.

Whats the twist on the barrel on your AR shooting those 40 grain Fiocchi? I like the idea of the Fiocchi especially the price compared to the others

FirstCoues- Which brand did you like that carried the ballistic tips? What grain?

    The Miller Chill Javelina (2009)

Well I'm embarrassed to say but when I started I was using a 180 gr Underwood FMJ. My thinking was that I had more then enough gun and that 10mm would be a cake walk to put them down. It hit them, but it went right through and didn't dump its energy so they would keep moving as though they never got touched. I switched bullets to a hollow point for remainder of the hunt. My dad used SST's on elk and did not like the results he got. If it weren't for a double lung hit, the elk may have walked for miles not dropping any blood. It was crazy. One small drop is all we found. Were the elk piled up and died , there wasn't even blood. Tough animal. Every animal is built different and needs a bullet to match. A mistake I wont make again. Even on small game. Seen coyotes get nailed with 223 and drop, get back up and run. Bullet placement is key, most important really, but good bullets cant be underestimated either.

Saying the system is flawed isn't saying that I think it couldn't be worse. I know it can. I do think it could be better too. And I for one am not asking for the "everyone wins" type of setup as that is not possible. That's just ridiculous to even mention as someone did. Perhaps a rotation type deal on premium hunts. Meaning, you get drawn for a early bull hunt, then you cant get drawn for the same one or similar one the next year or something like that.

    Family camping tent??

After much procrastination, and almost buying a toyhauler, enclosed trailer, and one of the Coleman instant up tents, I went with the Kodiak Canvas10x14. Even if I get a camper in the future, I could always use this tent. Definitely well built and easy to put up.

Id like to say I don't care but I do. However I looked once and saw nothing last Friday so I figure I didn't get drawn. Business as usual. When people with no points or 2-3 points can get drawn over a person with 15-18 points, especially when some people get drawn year after year on coveted tags, the system is seriously flawed. Yes, I'm alittle bitter

Agreed. Also learned a lot on bullet selection and what I thought was good was actually not. Fun animal to hunt

    Another Old School Pig

Awesome! I love to see these open sight hunts. Agreed with what you said about forcing it to be fun and interesting. Doesn't seem as fun to hunt them with long range scoped rifles. Keeps it more challenging with open sights or pistols.
  16. Very cool. Always like seeing posts about different type of hunting guns other then the usual kind. 7.62x39 is a good round and very underrated in my opinion. In the right guns, even AKs, it can be pretty accurate even with the abundant cheap ammo. Got an Arsenal AK I plan on hunting pigs with open sights next year. Can't wait.

    Remington Triggers

BenBrown, Another part of the problem is there are to many people so loyal to a certain company, they refuse to acknowledege that there is a issue when there is one and underplay it. As you stated, if proper firearms safety is practiced, no one would ever get hurt regardless. However, a gun going off when the safety is released is still a problem. Imagine the uproar if a vehicle went full throttle and you couldn't stop it once the break was released? There would be heck to pay, as there should be. I will sell my Remington 700 once its back from them. I am done with them. They knew it was an issue but refused to take care of it. That's really what bothers me the most.

    Awesome weekend of calling..

Have you been handcalling mostly or electronic? We seen a ton of coyotes on the HAM hunt using the javelina calls. Wish I had taken my rifle. Good Job!

Well the antis will go after anything, but Remington isn't helping itself either by having the QA issues it's been having. I only own one 700 and it has been recalled. Wish I could just get my money back and buy a Savage or a Tikka.
  21. Never really been into javelina or desired to hunt them. However I thought it would be cool to try a ham hunt using a regular self defense type pistol. Man, was I humbled this weekend with my shooting abilities. Me and two friends, who like to hunt javelina, went in on this together. We found plenty of pig and got within distance plenty of times but finalizing it wasn't so easy. I don't know if it because we under estimated them or over estimated our shooting ability but needless to say, it's like Javelinas 7(or more) - Hunters 0. Still a blast either way. I will say, semi autos and pigs make for a challenge that's for sure. We were using a Glock 22, 20 and a 1911. All factory standard.

Well we were down in some grassy flats looking for pig in the brushy washes when one of my buddies spotted two coyotes about 150 yards away. They had no idea we were there. So my buddy said "should I lip squeak and see if they come in? " Sure why not, I told him. Figured what the heck, what do we have to lose. Next thing you know, here they come once he starts. All three of us kneel down in the grass and pull our pistols thinking no way they will ever get close enough. One heads in straight towards us at a trot, the other splits off too our left, trying to flank us. Next thing you know at about 40-50 yards the one jumps up over a bush and stops right in front of us. I take a shot and miss, take another as he runs, and by chance on the third shot, nail em. All I see was feet in the air and then disappear in the grass. With total disbelief, we walk over and there he is dead. Of course with the first shot, the other one bolts before our other buddy can see it too shoot. The whole sequence is still unbelievable. From simply lip squeaking them all the way to pistol range to hitting him on the run. It was possible the coolest thing I've seen hunting ever. Couldn't do that twice again if we had too.

Thats a fact! I hit a coyote this hunt with that same 10mm and he died instantly. Not to sound morbid or weird but I guarantee a large man could not handle being hit the way those pigs got stuck. It was unbelievable how tough they were to get down.

Toughest little animal I've ever shot at. The one blooded up is my buddy's. it took 3 shots from a Glock 10mm and a finishing shot from a 44 mag to kill it. The other one was killed with two shots with from a 10mm. I still can't believe how they take shot and run like they were never touched. Mine never bleed one bit. I have much new respect for an animal I never thought twice about. Sorry for the crappy pics and less then wonderful write up, lol.
