ASU's campus is full of weird, unexplainable things.

If you guys are worried about grammar, avoid this post: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/70306-dec-tag/?view=getnewpost I'm not sure if the OP has a tag or helping a friend.??

Cell phone apps have pretty much replaced handheld GPS. Screen quality and functionality is way better on a smartphone. Most apps allow maps to be downloaded to be used without cell signal. Biggest hurdle is battery life on your phone

Since he doesn't carry much gear, I'd say the Kuiu 3200 or even 1850 would be a better option. The load sling works well for packing meat.

The beeps can be turned off on the Motorolas as well. My experience is that the Motorolas transmit better than the Midlands as long as you have more than half battery. The rechargeable batteries that come with them are junk, three AAA last much longer and transmit better. As others have said, getting Motorolas and Midlands to communicate is spotty at best.

Becker's example of a pyramid is a good way to look at it when the older age class are harvested at the top then replenished by the next generation. Harvesting the older age class (trophy hunting) is the best way to ensure the age class remains older. I think it's fair to say that on most elk hunts, the majority of bulls harvested are in the 2-4 yr old range. If you look back at my previous post and harvest data, with the boom in bulls harvested in recent years, what I believe has happened is that a large percentage consisted of 2-4 yr old bulls. This narrowed the bottom and middle of the pyramid resulting in fewer bulls available to replace the older bulls harvested from the top of the pyramid. There are still older (trophy) bulls in both 1&27 and if you scout and hunt hard they can be found. But my opinion is that there are fewer 4,5+ year old bulls now than there was 5,10,15 years ago.

I was able to meet up with Jon last night. He is still backed up due to the move but he said he thought he'd be caught up in a month or so. New shop looks like a good setup for him.

Any recommendations for an alternate butcher in Tucson? Been using Wild Game Processing for 10 years or so but I have not been able to get ahold of him. Couple buddies have had the same problem. Guessing with the move he is a little backed up. Any other good butchers?

John does a great job for sure. Meat is cold, I'll keep trying to get ahold of him. Thx for the replies

Very disappointed in my Kenetreks as well. This Zamberlan deal is very tempting.

It doesn't look like G&F publishes total elk numbers, at least not that I see in the Hunt AZ data.

I've been keeping an eye on this for a little while so I have Tag and Harvest data back to 2004. Remember that harvest data is a little challenging to get accurate but these are the numbers G&F reports in their Hunt AZ Data. These are just the Bull Hunts Unit 1 shows a pretty steady harvest # of ~325 bulls through 2010 and it then jumps to an average of ~ 400 bulls harvested per year from 2011-2015 (20-25% increase). Unit 27 is much more dramatic. Consistently less than 200 bull harvested 2004-2007 with a low of 165. Jump in tags in 2008 and increase in harvest to ~220 from 2008 to 2011. Post Wallow Fire plus tag increases shows a spike in bulls harvested to a max of 399 in 2014. That is nearly 2.5 times the number of bulls harvested just 8 years prior. My thoughts are that the spike in harvest that both units saw 2011-2015 has caused much fewer 4+ year old bulls, thus fewer quality bulls. AZ has good genetics, and these two units get consistent enough moisture that there is generally enough feed, bulls just need age to get big and fewer bulls are getting to that age. Notice that both units showed a drop in harvest #s in 2015. Could this be due to the hit the elk took 2011-2014. The 2016 data will be interesting once published.

Did you remove the stock when you cleaned it? Also, check that there isn't solvent build up in the chamber.

Check your action screws and scope screws. Clean barrel shouldn't cause a 4" group and it shouldn't take 40 shots to foul it. Something else sounds off to me.

The age class gap that you mention is very apparent, with lots of bulls that are a year or two away from being a bull that meets AZs reputation. My hunting buddies and I have been talking about how this age class gap is coming, and now it's here. The last few years the late hunt has been a slaughter, with raghorns piling up at the butcher shops. Sadly, it needs to burn again. The deadfall is horrible, and unnavigable. I had originally hoped that regrowth would give elk cover and reduce success rates but I've been witnessing the elk avoid the aspen thickets and deadfall. This seems to be concentrating them in the open areas making them susceptible just like after the fire. TAG NUMBERS NEED TO BE REDUCED!!!

Like others have said, get a tool like hornady's to measure to the ogive. Redding's competition shell holders are also awesome. They come in a set in .002" increments, allowing you to leave the die alone and simply swap shell holders to make .002" adjustments to seated length.

The manfrotto 700rc2 that you are looking at is a very good head. I've been using one for 10+ years. It would be a great head for any of the tripods you are looking at.

Cards special teams is bad all around. O-line is the biggest offensive problem.

I heard em all night too, all the way from Tucson. Half day at work then headed north to be a helper.

Don't bother bringing bait, the crawdads are relentless!

I'm not even a local and new that right when I saw it. Neat little lake, crazy high dam.
