Eliminate Auction tags entirely?
kwp replied to dobbs07's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I really don't think that this would help. If auction tags were eliminated them AZSFW would just change the bill so that they got all the raffle tags and the proceeds from the raffle tags. We'd be right back in the same mess we are in. The issue isn't the special (auction or raffle) tags, it is that they think that they should have total control over them. -
Predator Control funded in Utah

Here's my wild idea on how to reform our laws to better control coyotes. If you talk to the goverment trappers, one of the more effective ways they control the coyote population is from the air. Numbers that I have heard is upwards of 200 coyotes in a day. The regs currently don't allow wildlife to be taken from a vehicle so you or I could not legally go out and do this. What if a bill was passed through that would allow individuals do become specially licensed or guides to become specially licensed to take hunters on aerial coyote hunts. Doesn't that sound like a lot of fun? I'm sure there are tons of reasons why this wouldn't work that I can't think of, what do y'all think? -

I can't remember where, but I was thinking that someone said that Chris Denham resigned from the board. Can anyone confirm? -
I don't know, did you? so is potty training at ASU a 100 level course or is it in a graduate program?

I can consistently get 1100-1150 on trees and other vegetation and even more on a very reflective object like a boulder. Can sometimes get over 1400 yards.

Such scum! Did they steal any of your reloading tools? I guess the average joe looks at reloading tools and don't even know what they are. It's been on my list to get a better door/lock for my reloading room, maybe I should bump it a little higher up the list.

I didn't see anything at all until I looked at the screen through my swaros. Amazing how those binos help me spot game. j/k, I don't see anthing but tree either.

Good ol La Nina making for a warm and dry late winter/spring. I know that in southern az with the wet early winter and then recent warm up it has really greened up quite a bit. Hopefully northern az and the rim country are seeing the same thing to help give the elk some early antler growing nutrition.

GUESS THE SCORE! – #6 Rippin from his Bed

No kidding he loves to bugle! I'll guess 330 -
I would pay more and wait longer. Problem is game & fish would just wait a couble years and then add more tags to get more "HUNTER OPPORTUNITY".

So now that the year is over can we expect to see pics of a new world record typical? Is the rumored buck the one that Lance, the breeze, and vowell are talking about or were some lucky december tag holders still hunting this brute? Any updates/pics?

Casey makes a really good point here. When conditions are not ideal as in many hunting situations, especially long range hunting, I'd rather know that my bullet could penetrate long ways through a big game animal rather than blow up its hind end. With good shot placement it doesn't matter what bullet is used (even an arrow will do it), but if the shot placement isn't perfect, will the bullet still get the job done? P.S. The barnes bullets work at long range too. My brother dropped his bull in it's tracks at 710 yards with a 180 grain TSX out of his 300WM.

The bullets that you are considering are exact opposites as far as their design and their terminal performance so you really need to consider what you are looking for the bullet to do. The bergers are thin jacketed bullet designed for rapid expansion and large wound channels. The bergers are one of the higher BC bullets on the market and have become very popular with the long range crowd. The downfall with a rapid expansion bullet is that they will often blow up with very little penetration. This is most prevelant at higher velocities that usually occur at closer range shots. A complete pass through will rarely happen with the bergers. The barnes bullets are 100% copper bullets that are intended to give very high weight retention which results in smaller wound channels but greater penetration. The barnes typically have lower BCs but their new LRX bullets have gotten them into the higher BC group. The downfall with the all copper bullets is that at longer ranges (lower velocities) they can create a very small wound channel due to minimal expansion. Barnes claims that the polymer tipped bullets (TTSX and LRX) will expand at lower velocities than the original X and TSX bullets. So the question is, do you want a bullet that expands rapidly that can create a huge amount of damage but provide minimal penetration or do you want a bullet that will hold together better with better penetration but smaller wound channel? For coues deer their both gonna kill em quickly but I would go with the barnes because the berger will tend to ruin more meat and the cape.

Happy Birthday bro, and all the others that share today as a birthday!

G&F is counting on these quad riders to lower the success rate for everyone so that they can increase the number of tags which means more "hunter opportunity". I ran into that guys evil twin last year in 27. Standing up riding around, watched him whizz past a good herd bull that had about 12-15 cows. Stopped him a few hundred yards down the road, said he hadn't seen an elk in the 4 days he had been hunting.

The USGS originally created all of their maps in NAD27 but as they come out with updates to the culture (roads, trails, water features, etc) shown on the maps, they often also update the datum to NAD83. I always use the USGS 1:24K paper topo maps which in the bottom left corner have the datum printed. If you are using a different map product then I'm not sure where to find the datum used but you could run into some errors if not using the correct one. I have the Garmin Etrex Vista and as others have said it should be set to UTM UPS and NAD27 CONUS or NAD83.

exactly, it is one thing to have a typical buck gross 140+, but to have it score 140+ after deductions, well that is one of a kind! Good luck to anyone chasing a buck that will even come close.

Great buck Devin!, We experienced the same thing with the deer drivers and random shots into the brush. Kinda freaky when its the brush right below ya. Glad you were able to get on this guy early in the hunt.
