    Rio Salado/Usery range

I have heard alot of complaints about Rio, but I have always had a positive experience there. I shoot Tuesday Night Steel almost every week. Great bunch of guys and gals there. I haven't done the sillouette lately or the 500 prone, but will start up after the elk season. By the way, was helping my frined's son on a youth hunt and he bagged a nice cow at 421 yards with my 7mm, sighted in at Rio. I guess if you have the punches to use the other ranges it is not as bad as the main range. I used the main range a month ago and it was a bummer that we could no longer set up at the 300 yard mark. Like I said before, only positive experiences at Rio.

    Deer hunt success

Measuring is quite ease. All you need is a flexible metal cable ( When I did my sons, I used the inside cable from a bicycle brake) and a ruller. Heck, nowdays you don't even need to think. Go the the Boone and Crocket website and they have a program that will calculate the size after you input the data. Back in the 90's I measured my sons midwest whitetail for a Pope and Young deer and came to within .5 inches of the official measurer. I scored Pope and Young 142 3/8. Do a little reading and you will see. Ron

    unit 35A

Heck, If Jack D shows up, I'll be there. I plan to camp off road somewhere, I kinda doubt that there will be any sites left at the lake when I get in the area on Friday afternoon. I have a Dodge 3500 diesel, black, with dull rear wheels, no hubcaps. Hope I can link up with some of you guys. Ron

    Solunar Tables

Yea, but the tables do not list how many come up clicks I need at 533 yards.

Mtngoat, I will be hunting there this Sat through the time I get a deer. Look for a black dodge 3500 dullie. Ron

I noticed that DIllon camo mentioned not to hunt the graveyard. What area or what is the graveyard in 35a? Ron

    Checklist

Has anyone created a checklise of what to take on a Coues trip? I can't remember how many times I was going to create one in Illinois and just put it off. (I remember even one time on archery opener that I had to drive back home to get my license.) There are so many different things that I never thought of out here in the west. Next question, how does one secure a rifle to the pack?

    Checklist

Thanks to everyone for the lists. This is exactly what I need. I just want to make sure that I don't forget anything, like the kitchen sink. Ron
  17. I arrived in 35a after dark on Friday and on Saturday morning started my scouting. Alot of beautiful country and now alot of questions. I have done all of my hunting in the midwest and this is new to me. I was on the west side of Fort H. Saw ALOT of Homeland Security or boarder guards. When one is on the dirt roads, what is a neighborly distance to have between hunters? What I mean is how far should I park away from another vehicle if I want to set up camp. I realized that I could scout an area extensively and come hunting day there might be another hunter or ten on the area I scouted. I take it that those washes are not a good place to set up camp. I like the terrain where the grass meets the foothills and then starts to blend in with the trees and such. This is what I am use to. Will these areas produce or should I go deeper into the mountains? When one goes deeper, how do you get your deer out? We use to either get the tractor or drag it to the road and get the truck. Saw a buck and a doe. Ron

    First scouting trip

I actually have two Cabellas walking sticks, will these suffice? I will have to reevaluate my backpacks, have three frame military style ones and one old rucksack by jansport thta is probably older than alot on this forum, bought back in the early 70's. Looks like time for a new one. I also forgot that I wil have to pack the rifle also. I will be out of town for a week, now I have something to comtemplate. Ron

    First scouting trip

I am starting to get a better handle on this western style or hunting now. So I should pack my binoclulars, tripod, rangefinder, gps, rain geer, game bag (what the heck is a game bag), knife(s), minimal survival geer(matches, space blancke, gause, tewwsers, tape), water, sweatshirt, tp, something to sit on,etc. Then instead of going to my tree stand or my blind, I should walk a ridge or two to get away from the atv's and road hunters and set up for the day. I of course do this in the pre dawn and return at twilight. In the rare event I that I take a deer, I bone it and pack it out with proof of sex letft on hide and the head and now I have a pack that weight 60+ pounds. Oh yea, don't leave the knife in the gut pile. This sounds like more fun that I can imagine, especially never having done it this way and at 58. By the way, are there misquoties here and what kinds of temperatures will I hit just west of Fort H in the early Nov hunt? What am I missing? Ron
  20. I was dumbfounded when I started to read all of the permit tags and seasons, etc. One of the non-permit tags that you might be interested in is the mountain lion, a very generous season. Really, after you read and reread the rules and regs they start to make sense. Ron
  21. My father bought me one back in the mid 60's. I still have it, a 600 in .308. If I remember correctly, paid $89 back then. The triggers were fantastic for these guns, not the lawyer proof ones. Ron
  22. Hi, I am new to the forum and just want to say hello. I picked up a leftover tag for 35a and will give it a try. I am from the midwest and your way of hunting out here is alot different, but I am going to give it my best try. I have talked to Game and fish ,have maps for the forests, have been researching coues deer, had alot of help from individuals from another site, will start scouting this weekend, etc etc etc. I have noticed that there is a wealth of knowledge here and I hope to be a contributing member when the time comes.
