requirements: 1.) compact, no more then 14" folded 2.) light weight (carbon preferred) 3.) does NOT need to extend to standing height 4.) ball head 5.) legs not restricted can go 180 degrees 6.) < $150 I see lots on amazon, but first hand experience/opinion appreciated

To follow up, I purchased this: https://www.amazon.com/ZOMEI-Z699C-Portable-Compact-Panasonic/dp/B01AZ0ZTIW Used it today and its a great COMPACT tripod. Very sturdy, light and the head is very smooth. The panning is fantastic and near fluid though not a fluid head. The ball is Very smooth once tension is set and does not require a lot of knob adjusting . At 14 folded, 3.4 lbs, and less than $150, it makes for a great DAY PACK tripod. Only down side for a lot of guys that like to glass standing is its overall height. But I glass sitting on a butt pad where stability concerns are nonexistent with a compact lightweight tripod. This recommendation is for a day pack type of system and is not going to work for a lot of guys that like an 8 pound monster sporting 2 axis fluid heads topped with spotting scopes/big glass and able to maintain shake free in 40mph winds...

Id like to tinker around with something else just dont have the time to load and group a new round.

I had a bad experience on a slightly forward shot on a mule deer with a 100gr ballistic tip. It broke up and never penetrated. I prefer something heavier and with more weight retention now for that species. But for pigs, Pretty sure the 70gr sierra is what well go with.

Im not stuck on a ball head. I just like the 3 axis adjustability, if a pan head had that Id certainly entertain that option again. The pan heads I have used, it becomes a pita to get your glass level on rocky uneven ground and moving around for different vantage points.

Siwash, thanks for the suggestion!

Sounds like you need to go back to school for some serious reading comprehension skills LOL. I explained the intended use of the compact light weight tripod I am looking for if you read the thread. I also explained I have a tripod thats seriously heavy, stable and fluid should I ever draw a sheep tag and need to glass 5 miles away with a spotter. I use that system when scouting all the time. However, contrary to your perceived limitations, Ive never been frustrated using a light weight, compact tripod with ball head with my Leica duovid 10-15 x 50s sitting on a hill a mile from the closest road that did not cost me an arm and a leg. It has never cost me spotting game. The only thing it has cost me was 4 less pounds on my back and hundreds of dollars left in my bank account. You see, I actually have experience with both types of systems, and I use them both! But when the scouting is done, boots laced up, tag in pocket, pack on the back and bow in hand, I go as light as possible and HIKE. For that, compact and light is MY preferred system. The TANK stays back in the truck which is parked on the road where 80% other hunters are... So, unless you have experience USING a tripod like the one Im looking for and can offer a suggested purchase that fit the requirements, your opinion holds no merit to this thread.

I remember loading 70gr. And I found them, 130 rounds. Pulled one, they are Sierra blitzing 70gr boat tail. Also found some 85gr Barnes tsx, but only 20 rounds.

Lol, that link was for my dads briefs order... too funny. Try this one: https://jet.com/product/detail/35b288d2f7f54a459afb86499823a61c?jcmp=pla:ggl:nj_dur_cwin_electronics_a1:electronics_camera_photo_tripod_support_accessories_a1:na:PLA_785510854_39764708063_pla-292507316589_m:na:na:na:2PLA15&code=PLA15&pid=kenshoo_int&c=785510854&is_retargeting=true&clickid=6d5208c6-2c58-4e41-b4c3-466548a2b4a1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiOXF0Pzr1wIVF8pkCh0smwY5EAQYASABEgJssfD_BwE

Like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Depend-Incontinence-Underwear-Absorbency-Disposable/dp/B008RJV2JY/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1512189630&sr=1-1&keywords=men's%2Bdepends%2Bfit%2Bflex%2Bunderwear%2Blarge%2B52ct&th=1 Looks just like another one I was eye balling on amazon. I might have to give it a shot. Looks like a nice compact, Its 17 folded, a tad over what I was looking for, and no weight listed, but could return it I suppose. The other nice thing about a ball head over a fluid, I find myself on uneven ground 90 percent of the time. When I sit there is no farting around with the legs to get my glass level.

I have a nice "tank" tripod with fluid head, and though very nice when from glassing from the truck and just off the road, it's overrated when looking to get into back country where the extra weight does not justify the stability and panning option. I primarily move, lock, glass. move, lock, glass anyway even with fluid head. I have an compact aluminum ball head that has seen better days, the leg clamps are starting to not hold and it's time to retire it and look at my options

not sure why I can't paste a copied url... there is one on amazon TR553-P228 in a 53" that looks decent, but it's so hard to tell without hands on it. and I understand the stability concern on windy days, does not concern me, I'll deal with it to be as light as I can.

agree about getting within 100 yards, I only archery hunt them cause rifle hunting them is not much of a challenge to me. but this is her first hunting experience so she will be learning every aspect that goes into it and if she can connect at 200 yards we'll gladly take that opportunity.

after looking at the Sierra website I am not too sure I have 65gr Sierra's, might be 70gr, but they are pink tip. I loaded them so long ago now I don't remember, might have to pull one and have a look see.

I have never put in for a leftover javelina tag, my step daughter is interested in a general hunt and I have a couple of questions as I am confused with the regs... 1. Will they offer them online? 2. If they do will she need a license to apply? 3. If not, do I just buy a license and mail the regular application with my hunt numbers for 1, 2, 3 hunt choices?
-
if you made a mistake on the app will it show on the portal as "Not Drawn"?
-
good stuff guys, thank you!
-
so the leftover indicates "Applications accepted by US Mail only ON or After November 27, 2017". So you all are saying if it delivers on Saturday 11/25/2017 they are not there to receive it so when they pick up their mail on Monday the 27th you would be in first?

be careful with oxi-clean while you are simmering. I used it exclusively one year and it made the skull real "flaky". I use dawn soap while fleshing and change water often. once it's clean, a tad bit of oxi in fresh water simmered for no more then an hour. that seems to help brighten it a tad before the hair care product (some white powder, forget the name, and 40 peroxide) is used reducing the amount of bleaching treatments. pressure washer seems the way to go with fleshing, except I hate removing any of the "natural" stain the deer has rubbed on the antlers and am always very careful when rinsing. you can remove the natural coloration very quickly even with just the hose and rinsing.
-
I would have been upset if I mailed one in and then it opened up online and could ensure it was acquired at that time vs hoping your envelope was opened first
-
I was confused as well... and it's been years since I have used a paper app and before you had to have a license number to apply. Thanks for the clarification

as far as clothes, I wash mine in ozone. I have a large tote that halls my gear that I hot glued some binder clips to the lid. this allows me to hang my shirts and pants from the lid for maximum surface area exposure to the ozone. I then run a Scent Purge 50 ozone generator that I put in a small container with a 12volt computer fan on the lid and holes in the side and wired that to the 12v line that runs the generator. This allows the air/ozone to circulate in the tote ensuring maximum ozone exposure. I hunted 1.5 weeks in the same pants and shirts changing only underwear and socks. When I got home I asked my wife if the clothes I wore the whole time stunk, she said "no not at all, but I sure did"... the key is getting back to camp and getting them off and in the ozone for at least an hour to remove any body odor. I do not believe in ozone while hunting like ozonics, I think that is a bunch of BS, but to remove odor from clothing it works great. just don't put anything with rubber elastic in the ozone as it will eat it. will this keep them from smelling you 100%? NO not at all you still need to work the wind, and your body odor is still prevalent, but it helps keep that body odor from saturating your clothes and will reduce your scent profile. I had cow elk feeding at 5 yards with thermaling wind swirls twice for almost 10 minutes.

I'll probably be solo for most of my early archery hunt this year. Last time I had an early archery tag the good bulls almost always hung up at 80 - 100 yards looking for the cow that was calling. Rag horns were not so cautious. Has anyone used a Montana decoy where if you get a bull coming you quickly set it up by hanging on a tree and moving 30-40 yrds into the direction of the bull?
-
lol. Just posted a question about using decoys hunting solo. My biggest concern is shooting one in the evening and not having tracking help should it not go down right away. The more flashlights there are looking the better the chance of finding a spotty blood trail. Then the cleaning. I'll use gutless if I get lucky and hope it's not too far back in the nasty stuff. Good luck to all the solo guys!
