Does anybody have a ranch or know anyone who has a ranch in unit 30? I had hunting plans to go hunt sheep, but the ranch owner backed out. PM me asap if you have any info.... I have already purchased the $111 license and dont want to have to just throw it away. Derek

Well I just got back from my ML coues hunt here in NM. We had 3 mule deer tags in camp, and one coues tag. Opening day I had two fairly nice bucks at 280 yards. As I was trying to move 30 yards closer, a white toyota 4-runner decided to come down the canyon I told him I would be hunting. Anyways the bucks vanished out of that canyon. An hour or so later I had two little 3 points jump up at 100 yards, but I elected not to shoot. The second day started off by seeing 2 real nice bucks on the ridge behind camp........but ended up being spooked by other hunters. Around 8:15 I spotted a nice 10 point buck running across the canyon at about a half mile away headed our way. I thought for sure I was not going to get a shot. After about 30 seconds he was right under me at 275 still running, so I set up the bi-pod and got ready for the shot. He finally stopped at 290 yards, but couldn't see him through the trees. As soon as he came out he was running again, so I chose to shoot at him at a full run. I shot and he fell, so I reloaded as he was getting up and then he vanished into the trees. Not a minute after he got up I heard a gun shot from where he went. I got sick knowing exactly what had just happened, so I walked over and started tracking him. Got down the hill about 200 yards on his blood trail and found two hunters holding him. They tagged my deer, and packed it off the mountain not even letting me get pictures of it. My buddy went to their camp later that night and got a few pictures and taped it out at 101". My shot had hit right behind the ribs and went into the chest. So after all this I was very very mad, but was determined to get another one. Ended up seeing 4 more bucks, one making the one I shot look like a baby. Saw a total of 12 bucks and about 50 does in four days, but never got another shot.

Here are 14 animals that I was able to dig up that didn't make the trophy room. The 4 bull elk in the 2nd picture... scores from left to right- 310" that was left out for a couple months in the shed and the critters got to it, 315" archery bull from this year, 356" bull from last year, and 320" bull from this year. Then some small bucks the biggest being 145", and of course the oryx and barbary sheep.

Here are some pictures from a scouting trip this last weekend. Saw a nice coues, a couple nice muleys, and a lot of elk. The bear was at 20 yards when I took the picture. It was nice to get up there and put up stands and cameras. Derek

Here are the bulls we got this week here in NM. I shot my bull on monday around one. I was able to cut him off as he was headed up a ridge to a wallow. Two shots out of my x-force put him down. I shot low the first shot and the bull ran 5 more yards and gave me another shot at 58 yards. He ran 400 feet down a huge canyon and rolled about 30 feet down to the bottom. We quartered him out and packed him out. It was 7 hours from the time I shot him to the time we got him to the top where the rangers were. My dad shot his at a water hole the next evening. He shot the bull at 30 yards right before dark. We left the bull overnight (39 degrees) because he could hear the bull breathing an hour after the shot, and was worried about the shot. The next morning we went up and found him dead 40 yards from the tank with a liver shot. If we would have tried finding him that night he would have busted out of there and we would have lost him. Two other hunters in camp got shots but were unable to close the deal. We had a blast chasing bulls and just bein out there in elk country. Derek

Thanks everyone! And ya we had the same problem with the elk goiong to bed before the sun came up. The first day I got in the middle of 11 bulls, but they all hung up just a few yards out of range. Then the elk got smart and wouldn't come to calls really at all. I had an oppurtunity at an easy 360 bull, but he stopped at 30 yards behind a tree and hung up. He was a monster............ But we all had a blast chasing them and getting into the middle of the big herds. Glad to hear you had a good time up there. Derek

I would contact Joel Edwards of Edwards taxidermy. He has done all but one of our mounts. He is the best in NM and if you go to his website www.edwardstaxidermy.com he has proof.
